I interviewed Carroll Shelby several times and would cut up the interview in short bits for this, that or another project. I decided it would be interesting to hear him as he actually spoke and told stories.
He was a one of kind. A true legend. And I miss him.

Agree, he remembered and gave credit to the engineers and specialists, too many these days are “I did this” and “I did that” and he says at the end no one is good at everything. He recognised he was good at creating a vision that people related too, he created the drive and environment that capable people wanted to be a part off, so he had a great team, and he gave them credit. A visionary, a leader, doing what he loved .... that’s a powerful mix

@@alfee9411 that's what we did for our customers. Shelby American supplies its dealers with Cobras that are called Turn Key minus The minus refers to the fact that Shelby does not ship the roller with engine or transmission. We bought and installed Shelby FE side oiler engines that are based on the 427 FE family. They were all-aluminum close to 500 cid for the base engine with an average of 500 hp 500 # trq. Tremec 5 or 6 speed. We put together a decal package that used every label, decal on the engine and under the hood, just like the old days. My Cobra was the 427 S/C with the FE Shelby engine, 5 spd trans, and no race stripe. It was a monster. It weighed around 2000# and weight means a lot in performance, more weight less performance. If I did it again I would opted for a 289 Street or 289 FIA Cobra.Much more civilized. Where ever I drove the car people would gather around when we would stop, come up and ask to take pictures of the car. It was fun seeing their faces, smiles. They are a blast, no power steering, brakes, or windows. Nothing of power except the engine. :)

@@alfee9411 the CSX series Cobra by Shelby has 98 present interchangeability of parts to the original Cobras. I had been doing a package using decals that were reproductions of all the original Rotunda, and other factory labels under the hood just as they appeared in photos of the day.. Our customers loved them. The original Cobras were all-aluminum bodies which is still available for a higher price over the glass bodied Cobras. . My Cobra was a 427 S/C CSX 4000 with the Shelby Manufactured aluminum block and heads FE Side oiler just like the old days, just far more HP and Trq. If I did it again I would go with a CSX 8000/ 9000 Cobra, it was the 289 powered street Cobra. Far more civilized to drive. The 427 S/C is the wider body with the exhaust pipes down the outside. People burned their legs all the time getting out. I always showed people how to get in and out of the car without hurting themselves but in the excitement of the drive ( I always drove because these Cobras are monsters to control ) that they would burn a leg getting out. It's so common it was called " being Snakebit" The power out of the Shelby built FE which was closer to 500 cid than to 427 pulled over 525 HP and 550 Trq on the engine dyno. The car's curb weight was around 2000 pounds. You had to have the car straight ahead, same with the front tires and carefully apply the throttle or you went places you didn't intend to go. At 75 mph you can light up the rear tires with little effort. These were race cars and when driven with that understanding were an E-Ticket ride. After several new owners crashed their Cobras we put together a Driver package with Bondurant School of Racing in Phoenix, AZ The owner Bob Bondurant is a Race legend from the 50s, 60s who drove for Carroll at Shelby. When I met with Bob at his facilities to put the training package together he told me that he had never driven the 427 S /C only the 289 Cobras. I told him I could have my 427 there the next day. His personal assistant flipping through Bob's day planner said " Sorry Bob, but you are booked solid for the next 3 months." " The hell I am. Have the car here tomorrow after 10 if that's okay?" It was. It was a pleasure to see him light up when I offered him a chance to drive it. He took It out on his road racecourse and promptly ran off the track In the 1st turn. But after that he lit up the track. He apologized stating that he was used to driving the Corvettes (Chevrolet, Corvette Division provided his school with there cars ). He was all smiles.

After having read a number of books and articles about Shelby and his career as a driver, designer and maker, I would have to say that Phil Remington was one of his secret weapons and has never received the credit for what he did. Remington wanted to go to college to become and engineer but the second world war came along and he enlisted putting his plans on hold. When the war was over, he, like many young men at the time, decided that his path was going to change because, all things being considered, a degree just didn't seem that important anymore. Remington was a natural born engineer and Shelby recognized that. When the first Cobra was built, the only part of the car that did not make the grade was one of the rear bearing carriers on the independent suspension. The next day Remington secured a couple of pieces of billet aluminium and got busy in the machine shop. His new carriers were installed and Shelby never had another carrier fail in competition thereafter. Remington was also responsible for developing the Ford GT40 and the Shelby King Cobras because his ability to foresee problems before they happened was phenomenal. Without Remington, you might never have heard of Shelby Motors, the cobras, or of the Shelby Mustangs. Sadly, the movie makes Remington appear to be a very minor player in the game.

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Mr. Shelby at the SAE Convention In Detroit about 2007 -2008. He is without a doubt a soft spoken gentleman. Why this man ever hooked up with Ford is beyond me so I asked Mr. Shelby and his response was simple. He desperately needed the money to feed his family but for that he had no use for Ford.

Mr. Shelby is taking this interview seriously. It’s giving him a chance to set the record straight. And he doesn’t pull punches: to him the stock Mustang was a secretary's car. His powers of recollection are extraordinary - you can sense the intellect behind the good ol' boy persona. Long may he run.

I had the opportunity to shake this man's hand back in '72, at a Ford dealership in Orange County, CA. Very friendly/personable and even gave me a compliment for my '67 fastback, that I had tucked a purpose-built 351C and M21 tranny into. I cut a coil off of the suspension springs and swapped a 9-inch posi diff underneath and that little Mustang ran like a top. He even agreed to take a seat for a photo (sadly lost in an '07 CA fire) w/ me in the passenger seat. When I prompted him to turn the key, I was so proud of my Mustang when he revved it several times up to 5K & 6K RPMs and all he could do was smile and shake my hand, saying, "This sounds real nice." RIP Carroll. Thanks for the compliment.

I really liked this interview. I've never seen Shelby talk before but I instantly warmed to the man. He came across as honest, sincere and true to his convictions. In short, an impressive historical figure who I want to know more about and emulate. He says he has "attention deficit". That's been a problem for many people. I get bored with things after seconds and can sympathise with him. Obviously Shelby gave himself a mountain of tasks that ensured he had no time to get sidetracked. We don't really have giants like him anymore. It's all about technology and integrated teamwork. That's good for certain tasks but I think I prefer Shelby's model. (One captain, delegating specific tasks to the most appropriate staff member).

One of the coolest moments of my life - getting to unknowingly meet Mr. Shelby at Galpin Ford back in 2001 or 2002 after pulling up to head over to the parts department in my customized fire engine red 1997 SVT Cobra clone - but was just a V6 Mustang - with SVT rims, trim, a functional Cervini ram-air hood, and Flowmaster exhaust. "Nice job!", he said. Shook my hand, took a solid look around it, and then went back to his meeting on the lot. One of the people that were waiting to talk to him had to tell me who in fact just shook my hand...

I was 6 or 7 back in 73-4 and the first true hot rod/muscle car I had ever seen was a Shelby mustang 302 boss. A new neighbor moved in 10 houses down the street, every time that car fired up I was out front to watch it drive past. It had headers/cam and it sounded so good. Been hooked on fast cars ever since. That car changed my life my father and grandfather were carpenter's , I became a mechanic because of that car. Thanks Carroll. Thanks KRA I never got to meet the man himself .

1966, a young ladie's father bought her a Shelby Cobra. All of us young men were in awe. She would tear out of the "Frosted Scotchman" drive in restaurant with the tires burning. Don't know how many tires she went thru, but it was a lot.

This is one of Mr Shelbys best interviews, his last one before he passed I believe. Been a Kiwi i had the pleasure to meet him on several occasions and have met several of his original mechanics and fabricators. Such a great era of motorsport that several of my countrymen were involved in with Mr Shelby at that time.

Mach1club. My grandpa (big ford person) owns a 2013 GT500 as well he bought it as soon as it was released. He never drives it because we live in Canada. And if he even gets a scratch on it. He has to send it back to Texas to get fixed. I own a 2011 Camaro SS, and a 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE. I’m a big Chevy person. But I still love Shelby and all his work. One of the reasons why I love cars and motorsports.

They don't make them like this much anymore. I'm sure it was an uphill battle with everything and to see how it turned out amazing. People like this are amazing people !! Probably things he added to the Auto industry that we will never know. Hopefully people realize what an amazing person he was. Grow up dirt poor and turn something out of that during some hard times!! Thank you for adding so much back in. You absolutely did what you loved in life and made it.. Thanks-You!! Good job on putting the video together!!

I grew up in Dallas near Carroll Shelby's Ford dealership...my Dad bought at least one. Just saw the movie with family...the sound is incredible on the cars. I was very impressed that Matt Damon and Christian Bale put so much into a movie about men even more famous than themselves....well done, guys!!

Carroll was a great guy with an uncommonly good sense of direction. The first time I heard of him was in the mid-to-late 50s when he went - no, make that drove his 1956 Ford - to Bonneville and did quite well, and then drove back home in it to Texas.
