Hader and Tarantino great commentors Ive been listening to a bit of them here and thee. Tarantino is sketchy, some of the commentary seemed mere hacking, but I dont know if Hader is the writer here, very good writing. I know a lot of what this is introductory, Tarantino vocal about his sensibilities be damned is fresher than Hader's, which refers to the popularity, doesn't make much more detail as if its written as an introduction. Yet now I wonder how the distinctive pace, which isn't a lot to comment about or feature, has endured. Back in 80's video it was strikingly paced, like a James Cameron movie zip along.
@Schad501 It's pretty dull. I'm also hard to win over with noir about private investigators & that. I'm more about the heist & murder noir. Bogart has done some great noir but this is low on my favourite of them.
The movie is better than Dashiell Hammett's novel. His novel is the real treasure of noir, but its prose not so much. His character descriptions are clever, done like a detective just interested in the facts. But the rest of the prose driving the narrative is kept dry to maintain a sense of "realism." Which sounds noble, but imagine sifting through a police report on your day off for a leisure read.
It's a great movie, but the casting of Mary Astor is my only problem with it. In the book her character is described as extremely beautiful, and the actress just is not that.
@@georgemorley1029 have you seen the movie? it's roundly famous for being unintelligible. any adequate review of the film would do best to mention that.
@peabody3000 what about the plot doesn't make sense? I always thought the noir story was well written, John Huston was a top director and his screenplay for this film got him an Oscar nomination.
