Monk is a great interviewer, often letting his subjects talk for 15-20 minutes in response to a single question. But Bill is a tough interview, and makes Monk work for it. The result is, as usual, quite satisfying.

The recording of Zigzag that was played for Willis which he didn’t recognize is on an album of Mel Lewis called Sextet.

If there was a band leader who promoted the arrangers more than Kenton, I have no idea who that would be. Stan built his arrangers’ reputations!

As far as I know, Bill's big band still rehearses every week at the LA Union Hall. That's where the real treasures can be heard. Watta genius.
