Bill Mather makes an emotional return to The Grand Cinema in Ryhope, Sunderland, where he was a trainee projectionist from 1950 to 1955. He made one last visit before the building is deconstructed and moved brick by brick to Beamish where it will be restored to its former glory in The 1950s Town.

Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the Remaking Beamish project has been awarded £10.9m by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Got a little emotional watching this. There is a grand tradition of cinema that the generic multiplex fast food cinemas have lost. I love the fact that you are going to preserve this old cinema experience for future generation's to come. I just hope you staff it with people who are passionate about the art of cinema projection and have a bit of showmanship in their hearts. Look forward to seeing it once the project is complete.

Looks as if the original Westrex sound system was removed when the cinema was used as a bingo hall. Anyone know what happened to it?
