Time lapse video I put together of my climbing buddy E.K's onsight of the Bill Newcomb Tower route "The Big Lie" (5.11a). This 100' tower is located in the Terra Nova climbing area in SW Oregon. It's some of the finest Oregon choss you'll ever lay eyes (or hands) on. Seriously, don't pull OUT on the lower holds (only down), they're spooky.

It's a blast. The bottom is a bit chossy and has some spooky holds, but it's manageable. Top half was a lot of fun. It's a real trip to stand up there and take in the view. I want to get up there again and climb it on a day when the view is clear. The day we were on it there was a lot of forest fire smoke from NorCal obstructing the view.

I have no idea why they named the route that, but if I had to guess it's because for a long time people probably said it couldn't be bolted for a climb. It's a relatively new route. It only got bolted in 2021, but the climbing area has been known for a long time.

Maybe it's a volcanic plug, which remains after a cone erodes. If so, it's a beauty !

There's a few more similar formations at this climbing area, although none of them are as dramatic as this tower. I think you're right though that these are just the last remnants of an ancient volcanic plug.

I believe it's just the last remnant of a plugged volcanic vent. There's a couple more formations like it in that climbing area, although not as tall and skinny as this one. Fascinating geology.
