Was Bill Nye the inspiration for the Mythbusters? Watch as willing volunteer "Alan" from "Lindon" explores the repercussions of an elevator that is about to make it's last visit to all the floors. Bring out the "Scissors of Science!". And perhaps some toast.

The reality of the matter is, that an elevator with one person in it is more likely to fall upwards than down.

If you could jump like that you'll suffer the same "G" forces as if you jumped down from the height in question.

If you find yourself in that unfortunate circumstance.. try to make those in the elevator with you smile with a quick Diamond Dave impression "Might as well Jump!"😉🙂

If you lie on the floor, a larger fall is survivable, since the blow is absorbed more evenly through the body. Fotunately, the only times elevators plunged to the bottom were when planes struck them. Other than that, it's never happened since Otis's Safety Elevator (1854). (ThyssenKrupp's ISIS models did have all cables fail on multiple lifts, but the on-cab braking systems stopped those.)

What? And all this time I was like the ISIS models must be the safest elevators, similarly to their competitor the OTIS Gen 2. I guess nothing is for certain.

Well I am am not sure you can crouch for extra distance in free fall because you have to gain on the elevator to do it. Also it would take a lot of physical strength and good timing. Of course the elevator can't come apart and fall on you.

I’ve always wondered about this too, but there’s just way too much kinetic energy in the fall to overcome with a tiny jump. Plus, not to mention, most likely you’d probably crack your skull open on the ceiling if you were to jump. Yeeeeeaaaahh....

@cody1800212 No the test demonstrates the physics principles behind the 'elevator jump' misconception perfectly. You see, if you were to jump just before the elevator landed, you would only be changing your momentum relative to the elevator... Your momentum relative to the ground stays almost the same. Also, according to newton's third law the earth will still exert a large force back up on you, to match the force of gravity both you and the elevator have when you land... Either way, splat.

Good thing we have Otis safety brakes. The odds of a fall like this happening are about one in a trillion.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who just had a dream about falling in an elevator and spent the next day watching elevator safety videos lmao. Shout out to Otis.

An elevator that is traction or Mel will go upwards not down!

Fortunately, the likelyhood of this happening is so small, you'd have a better chance of hitting the lottery 10 times in a row. There's so many safeties, it's just about impossible for them to plummet to the bottom. There's only been 2 known incidences in the WORLD, where the modern-day cable-borne elevator fell as shown, one was the Empire State Building, when a plane hit the building, the other was 9/11. Get those lottery tickets. Chances are far better there.

Jump the entire height from which you fell from yeah no. Don't buy it. First off, we're not as fragile as an egg. You would only need to jump hard enough to where you're pushing the elevator down and jumping with enough force that you can actually propel yourself upwards just enough. Just because a TV actor sets up this half as spring experiment doesn't mean there isn't a way to figure out the proper procedure
