I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the idea for this entire episode started with Mikey saying "Bro do you have any chicken wings? No, it's the apocalypse I don't have any chicken wings!" and making himself laugh. This is my head canon now, and it makes me love this whole series even more.
@NovastarDoughnut

the thing i took out of bill and ted was a sense of optimism. nothing truly bad ever happens in the world of bill and ted. they die but the afterlife isn't painful and is rather chill. the present may suck but the future is going to be good, all these historical figures are clean and without moral/ethical ambiguity of their time. most the figures aren't racist, ablest, homophobic or oppressive and are all just cool dudes.
@cannibalisticrequiem
@cannibalisticrequiem 3 года назад
I mean, it's certainly idealistic more than realistic. We know, or we should know that some of the historical figures are *not* perfect unproblematic bastions of goodness-- some were really bad people. But Bill and Ted are really not concerned with that, their focus is on feeling good and having fun, and honestly that's what some of us need. An escape from the crushing depression of reality, if only for a couple hours. Some need it more than others, especially when you feel like you can't ignore the reality of the world. Bill and Ted have always been about optimistic and not hurting others.

This movie is one of the pillars of my strongest friendship. In Germany, there are some weird words, because they obviously didn't know how to translate "Dude" and some other words, back then. We quote it every once in a while since 20 years. My brother in law has almost exactly the same story with a friend of his. This movie shows a believable fun friendship among men. And I don't think of too many examples that go in that direction. Im afraid that for the new movie, they will say "Dude" in the German version, instead of "Hoschi" [Hosh-i] as they did in the 89 movie.

"No one says 'dude'." ??? I wish they had called me, because all through high school (I graduated in '83) my friends and I said "dude" more than any other word. We were in Philly, so it was more "Yo, dude" than "Gnarly, dude!" but still. The word. It was everywhere. And Valley Girl came out in '82 and was a big hit, so it's not like Bill and Ted-speak was alien or something. Those studio execs must have been high on the wacky weed.

I can't express how much I love the overlap of how exactly I feel about the Bill and Ted movies (being a gen-xer in the low end of the target demographic for these movies), as well as pointing things out that had never even occurred to me in this essay. I've always found these movies interesting. They definitely paved the way for Wayne's World, and were definitely influenced by Fast Times, but some how are a crest of good-hearted and not too mired in cynicism as either of those bookends of "being a slacker in the 80s".

We watched Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey back-to-back as a family and my sister and I finally understood so many of the jokes our parents had been making for almost ten years. That was in '98. I love these movies. I think they're hilarious and they make me think fondly of my family.

Bogus Journey was one of the films I forced my dad to take me to one glorious Summer (Summer with a divorced parent has it's privileges). I also forced him to take me to Terminator 2 and Trainspotting (I think that was the same Summer???). I don't recall his reaction to Bogus, but he was in hysterical fits during T2 at all the "wrong" (ie. ridiculous or scene chewing) parts. He had a keen eye for spotting the absurd and wasn't shy about it.

I find this video to be MOST excellent! But I also want to add a fun little story to these movies. The original Bill and Ted was filmed in a few locations in Arizona. Specifically, the mall is the old Metro Center Mall in AZ. I was born and raised in Arizona, and I learned a lot about the history of this film from my parents. My older brother was the one who let me borrow his DVD copy of Bill and Ted, but I've probably watched it over a dozen times just with my parents. They love Excellent Adventure as much as I do. I'm in my mid 20's, and my parents are in their 60's. Hearing that parents were opposed to having their kids watch these films blew my mind just now, because my parents watch it with me every time we stumble across it. I don't get along super well with my parents, but it is nice that we can share this.
