Briefly, what do you think the Course's purpose is?
THETFORD: To help us change our minds about who we are and what God is, and to help us let go, through forgiveness, our belief in the reality of our separation from God. Learning how to forgive ourselves and others is really the fundamental teaching of the Course. The Course teaches us how to know ourselves and how to unlearn all of those things which interfere with our recognition of who we are and always have been.

Between 1965 and 1972, Dr. Thetford not only acted as transcriber by typing the material from the notes that Dr. Schucman had taken down through a process of inner dictation and would dictate to him almost daily, but was also a tremendous psychological support to Helen as she struggled with her feelings of imposition and her basic mistrust of the process.
William Thetford, Ph.D. was a Professor of Medical Psychology at Columbia University, and Director of the Psychology Dept. at the Presbyterian Hospital.

I consider Bill as a ROLE MODEL teaching ACIM, while I was in a group with him at Tiburon near the end of his life. He did not participate much in the ACIM group, however he appeared in bliss smiling and giggling some. When we argued about concepts such as dismissing the body or demonizing the ego, he would tell us to "tear out those pages" in a good-natured easy going way. I think Bill live the first principle "LOVE IS THE ESSENCE OF OUR BEING." - "the awareness of Love's Presence with fear being the opposite..."

As I work through various life experiences there are two "for-the-rest-of-my-life" projects that offer me peace of mind having nothing to do with my work: (1) Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT-past life hypnosis therapy) and (2) A Course In Miracles (ACIM) as taught by Dr Kenneth Wapnick. It is in these realms that I observe Christ I could seldom find in organized religion, and here that I get a glimpse of our convoluted universe and come to realize life as we make it here on Earth is a classroom for lessons we scripted for ourselves, and the common miracle of self-realized healing by your Subconscious. These realizations tend to replace fear with love in all who encounter them and release guilt with forgiveness and understanding. Most everyone has incarnated many times and lived as every race, and both sexes.

this brought surprisingly strong emotion, when bill described the first phone conversation with helen. for some reason it made bawl like a big'n. mabye simply the gratitude i feel for them. im with the commenters below.. thank god they kept going

wow!! I cannot believe that I actually read n tried to do the work book back in the late 80's but had a lot of unfinished business to take care of first..then 4got about it. Long long story not worth mentioning at this time. Thanks so much for keeping this on line. l almost feel as I know both Helen and Bill personally. I'm finally getting back to the course through finding Gary on line through buying The disappearance of the Universe on amazon. I feel Holy Spirit has been trying to connect with me forever. Again WOW!!!

Hilarious description of Bill Thetford how A Course in Miracles came to be - while part of his official Job at Columbia university in those years of typing the Course was "to turn down/reject unscientifically written papers"....😋😂😂

How ironic is that? The man who was involved into the nuclear bomb project as well as the CIA's mind control project, is the same man who typed ACIM for us... just wow! :)

ancientrussian There is a book written by a man who worked with Edgar Cayce long, long ago called "Seer Out of Season." In this book the author writes that he also worked on the nuclear bomb project ... in the same facility as Thetford. Did they know each other? I wonder ... Certainly not a coincidence especially considering Cayce's son later involvement with ACIM.
