My daughter preordered TS new album with a bonus track. She’s subsequently released 3 other bonus track variants 🙄 no way is she buying 4 of the same album with one different song. It’s insane
Hey, Rose! Thanks for the comment. TS's team know what they're doing. They have a captive audience and are exploiting it. It's really up to the fan to push back but it's hard to do when you're all in on an artist. I wish you luck!
i think what billie was pointing out is about the deluxe versions of the album, like adding 3 tracks more to make it different. The color variants were not the issue i guess
Thanks Ciandryl! You might be right but I didn't see that in the Billboard interview. I understood that 'variant' applied to any 'extra' version of the vinyl whether it's a different color, cover or additional tracks, all of which I mention in the video.
Vinyl is expensive enough.... I'd love to know who the hell can afford all these variants too!! There's a similar rip off idea in comics with variant covers of the same comic. I'm all in on physical media (I don't stream music because it rips off the artists) but these variant vinyl versions, released by artists big or small just seems extremely greedy to me. They might argue that they are merely fulfilling a demand, but imo they are just taking advantage of their fans, some of whom may be extreme completists or obsessive collectors, so are easy targets. It's the same when bands release the same album in multiple formats, like cassette versions are now a thing, often in differing tape colours. But people will just buy them to have as collectors items, not to play. I don't see many kids walking around these days with cassette walkmen, lol. The whole thing just seems very cynical and opportunistic to me. Middle-aged man rant over, lol. Stuart
Hey Stuart! I agree that FOMO is a real thing when it comes to hardcore fans. I've been there 🙂 There have been many releases that I'd love to have got but couldn't financially justify. But I don't think we should punish the artist too much for trying to make a living. UNLESS it's egregious price gouging like $50 tshirts! (now common) Ultimately it's up to us as fans to determine if we should buy something.
