For the first time ever, the full broadcast of Billie Holiday's interview on The Comeback Story!
1953 was a busy year for Billie although she was not in the recording studio. She was performing in night clubs across the US and did numerous interviews talking about her hardship with getting her cabaret license in New York. One of those interviews is presented here, ABC's "The Comeback Story" (the answer to NBC's "This Is Your Life") with host George Jessel.
The show goes over Billie's life up until her arrest in 1947 and her triumphant return at her record breaking Carnegie Hall concert on Easter Sunday in 1948. There are special guest stars who go to bat for Billie, lauding her for her voice, loyalty and kindness. Those include Louis Armstrong, former lover Tallulah Bankhead, singer Mae Barnes, Artie Shaw and others.

She was very modern with her accessories and nails. She’s wearing styles like ear cuffs and nail art I see celebs wearing now. Look at her nails, she’s painted white triangles at the cuticles - I don’t think I’ve seen other celebs of that era wear their nails that way. Lady Day was always beautifully, timelessly put together.

Rest In Power my Sister from another Mother. She was robbed by the system we as her people can see that through her story. Truly missed.

Wow- just incredible to hear. Wondering... do you know who the guitarist is playing with her when she sings at the end? Sure sounds like Kenny Burrell- would love to confirm that.

Most shows from the 50s were filmed in kinescope or something like that so the footage is gone from early TV forever

just feels like more cheap, poorly written exploitation, which Ms. Holiday was probably used to by this time, sadly, but it sounds like (hopefully?) some work opportunities came out of it, so she just rolled with it. Love the obnoxious white guy voice explaining to us what "the blues" is, for a Black woman, during this era especially, instead of, I don't know, asking her? or permitting her the chance to discuss it in her own words maybe? Why is he doing all the damn talking? Does anyone else but me find this program insipid and demeaning to Billie Holiday in basically every way possible? And why does every white guy interviewer force her to sing "God Bless the Child" over and over? As she might have said, "this mf'er!"
