Billie Holiday Interviewed on Peacock Alley TV Show (1956)

The Billie Holiday Experience

November 8, 1956 was a very busy day for Billie Holiday. She was making the rounds on television and radio to promote her book and upcoming November 10th concert at Carnegie Hall, which would become a huge success. She appeared on Mike Wallace's Night Beat television program on ABC, Steve Allen's Tonight Show on NBC, and in this video, on Tex McCleary's Peacock Alley on NBC. Like with a lot of Holiday's television broadcasts in the 1950s, footage has been lost but audio has survived. This is a rarely heard interview in which Holiday talks about her upcoming concert, recites "Don't Explain," "Fine and Mellow" and "Yesterdays" in spoken word format and even talks about Elvis Presley. Enjoy!

I recently saw the movie, The United States vs Billy Holiday. I am amazed at her courage and determination singing the song, Strange Fruit, even though she was jailed and tormented by the Federal Agent Anslinger who was an avid racist. Since watching the movie, I have been watching and listening to interviews of her and learning more about her. I admire her for her steadfastness and courage, an amazing woman.

No matter wut brought u here u came to learn more about Billie holiday an that's a great thing... although there was a few creative liberties sources close to Billie one being her god child was quoted in sayin he was happy that the record was finally gng to be set straight that the movie was as close to the truth as it gets...it was hard to pin down everything about Billie but wut will always be known about her was that she was an amazing woman with a strong passionate voice....and fyi it was closer to her book then the 1972 make starring Diana Ross...keep seeking knowledge wutever the subject matter 💜💜💜💜

Her life WASNT sad. It was a normal human life with ups and downs, and one thing that’s clear from those that were close to her, she ENJOYED her life and did as she pleased most of the time

@@dddddadadad1796 getting beat up to the point that they had to tape up her ribs in order for her to be able to stand is not “normal”….getting hounded by the FBN, so much so that the head of the FBN kept going after her, even on her deathbed…this is not “normal”. Her life was sad, in my opinion. Who are you to tell someone what they feel? If the person thinks what the woman went through was sad she is entitled to say so, comment so and believe so.

11:55 (smdh) he asked 😒 Billie if you were stuck on a desert island, which records could you listen to forever? Billie says a few of her favorites like Pops aka Satchmo, Nat King, Count Basie etc. Then he says: "we could imprison you & you'd stay warm." 😒 You can tell he was trying to set her off. Then 👑Queen giggles a lil like, the *only* reason why I'm not showing you the *REAL BILLIE HOLIDAY* tuh-day is because I just spent a year and a day in jail when I should have been TREATED the same as others in the business with addiction *Judy Garland* so yea, *tee hee* 😒. I'll see you dem streets! Billie was a bad ass! She beat two grown men for disrespecting her and putting their cigarette 🚬 out on her fur coat. She could handle herself when necessary. At 106 in the spirit world, Billie is still loved and adored by many. No one remembers this interviewer.
