"One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" is a popular song written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the musical The Sky's the Limit (1943) and first performed in the film by Fred Astaire. It was popularized by the American singer Frank Sinatra.
Harold Arlen described the song as "another typical Arlen tapeworm" - a "tapeworm" being the trade slang for any song which went over the conventional 32 bar length. He called it "a wandering song. [Lyricist] Johnny [Mercer] took it and wrote it exactly the way it fell. Not only is it long - forty-eight bars - but it also changes key. Johnny made it work." In the opinion of Arlen's biographer, Edward Jablonski, the song is "musically inevitable, rhythmically insistent, and in that mood of 'metropolitan melancholic beauty' that writer John O'Hara finds in all of Arlen's music."
Sinatra recorded the song several times during his career: In 1947 with Columbia Records, in 1954 for the film soundtrack album Young at Heart, in 1958 for Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely, in 1962 for Sinatra & Sextet: Live in Paris, in 1966 for Sinatra at the Sands and finally, in 1993, for his Duets album.
Billy's accompanied by her orchestra, Harry Edison (trumpet), Ben Webster (tenor saxophone), Jimmy Rowles (piano), Barney Kessel (guitar), Joe Mondragon (bass), and Larry Bunker (drums). Recorded in Los Angeles, January 8, 1957. (Verve Records)
It's quarter to three
There's no one in the place, except you and me
So set 'em' up Joe, I've got a little story, you oughta know
We're drinking my friend to the end of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
I got the routine
So drop another nickel in the machine
I'm feeling so bad, I wish you'd make the music dreamy and sad
I could tell you a lot but you've gotta be true to your code
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of a poet
And I've got a lot of things to say
And when I'm gloomy, you simply gotta listen to mean
Until it's talked away
Well, that's how it goes
And Joe I know you're gettin' anxious to close
So thanks for the cheer, I hope you didn't mind, my bending your ear
This torch that I found must be drowned or it soon might explode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
You'd never know it, but buddy I'm kind of a poet
And I've got a lot of things to say
And when I'm gloomy, you simply gotta listen to me
Until it's talked away
Well, that's how it goes
And Joe I know you're gettin' anxious to close
So thanks for the cheer, I hope you didn't mind my bending your ear
This torch that I found must be drowned or it soon might explode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
That long, long road

Sinatra's favourite vocalist, and his biggest influence. When he heard of Lady Day's death he locked himself in a room for three days with a bottle of JD, weeping copiously over his copy of "Lady In Satin".

Unsurprisingly, she makes it her own. The exceptional backing of her sidemen (generously listed by the poster above, in the notes), didn't hurt the performance any.

No singer can "cover" this song, and no one but Lady could get within a universe of what Frank did with it during virtually live performance. Yes, it's a lovely recording, but it won't make you forget Frank's versions -- he owns it in perpetuity. Look on youtube for an incredibly intimate 1962 live performance with a quartet at Royal Festival Hall. Yes, Lady and Prez were Frank's inspiration, but it's clear from this recording that she also dug Frank. And in her last recording sessions, she sang several songs associated with him. An important fact that I slept through for 50 years is that the song is the work of two of the greatest of American song writers, composer Harold Arlen (Over the Rainbow) and lyricist Johnny Mercer. And I didn't know that it was introduced (in "The Sky's The Limit," a film that introduced another Arlen/Mercer standard, "My Shining Hour."

Why argue the point! Frank is great, but Billie owns this song!
