I really want to see this same conversation but with someone from a suffering or 3rd world country, it'll be interesting. I'm, myself, from Sudan, which a poor suffering, 3rd world, developing, and full of problems and conflicts country, and noticed that all my answers, even if they are the same as yours, are different in a way, I argue from a different perspective, you know. We are in the globe, you think about the technological leap and improvements, but here people still fight for their basic needs and rights, and still live in places unsuitable for living. The gap of the developed and developing countries is getting bigger and deeper now.

This makes my head hurt. I'm old, so my perspective is different. I have left the US permanently. I think about all this stuff but I think it is a waste of my time. I think I need to think less about what is wrong (I AGREE WITH ALL YOUR COMPLAINTS)or about what is going to happen, to let go of it and just pay attention to my own state of mind. Betty White just died and she is currently my hero. What a phenomenal state of mind! Work. When I was young I liked work that didn't pay enough. Now it is even worse for idealistic young people. The only thing that makes me more optimiistic is what you can do with technology. You are doing it! I have come to a few conclusions after a difficult life: Do work that you love. Build and protect your self confidence and self respect every day of your life. Be kind always. Understand yourself intimately. And something few people do, know who you are. Ask yourself if you believe there are other dimensions. I have experienced this and I am in good company, Carl Jung, Maya Angelo, Carl Sagan, etc. We want promises and concrete results when we are young. We want financial security. But if you look at those who have lived this way, with these priorities and beliefs, they are astounding human beings! People can be a success in their chosen career and be people you don't want to meet, like Picasso!

For sure man, but comparison is the thief of joy... why not focus on the fact that we are getting out of poverty at the fastest rate since the dawn of time? I cherish all of the privileges like being able to maximise my potential, having a perfect house with running water, having abundance of food, all the while as Nathaniel pointed out, we are Living in excess. It all has benefits and dow sides look at the obesity crisis in the world right now, how mental health dysfunctions sky-rocketed since covid. I am very ignorant to you're privileges and pitfalls in the 3rd world countries but there must be rudimentary joy in the simple things of life, strong social connection, love. Everyone is struggling everyone has it rough, the best thing we can do is perceive it positively and keep as jordan peterson said so eloquently- Struggling With God...

I empathize with that so much. I have a lot of friends that came to the US to survive, and saying that I wish I could get out feels ungrateful. But I'll never understand these right wing, flag flying, patriotic citizens, when we still have so much wrong with this nation.
@leoprg5330
@leoprg5330 3 года назад
I strongly disagree, the pride comes from being able to pass the legacy. That's is why people are proud of their nation/country or their family. If you are not proud of the values you were born into, those values will stop exist. I am eastern European (Czech), to me USA is the country where all important next big things in IT technology are born. Country that protected Europe from nacism, helped reestablished economic growth there, helped to the whole world by creating the internet which is educating millions of not billions of people now.

I think it's so important to address that you come from a place of privilege when talking about the meaning of life, escapism, and simulations because, for example, although your future self could be controlling your past self and leading them towards a place of growth, why would someone lead themselves into poverty or sickness? I'm not saying y'all don't consider or understand this when thinking about reality, but I think it's necessary to mention when talking about these things.

@liamkruchten1267 3 года назад
You're absolutely right. But their idea could still work with that, in a similar respect to why people put themselves in uncomfortable or painful situations at all. It creates extreme personal growth when overcome. The question then is if it's worth it to go through all of that suffering to become a "better" person or a more "evolved" person. Ascetic monks seem to think it is... but then it seems like it matters more if you choose to do that to yourself. So if you, a future you, chose to put yourself through that, could that almost be a sense of comfort for why a person experiences so many of the hardships in life? It's similar to the Abrahamic religions who believe that God has a purpose for all of the awful things that happen. Do I agree with either theory? Absolutely not. But it seems to be much more a spiritual and philosophical question of why evil exists, and if it can possibly be justified through growth.

Still, in America you can have access to all the information about every single country, nation, religion, languages, traditions, culture, food, habits in the world, and in many cases there are courses for every single of them in the best universities on the globe. Believe me, in certain countries it is still extremely hard, just see what is happening in a wealthy city like Hong Kong, and I don't even want to name countries like Iran, Syria etc etc etc etc etc. Also: I can name 10 American Nobel Prizes and none from El Salvador, Georgia, Gabon, Luxembourg etc (even though maybe there are some if I search on internet) I can name 10 American athletes that broke sports records, 10 American writers, 10 American outstanding actors, 10 American singers, 10 American generals, 10 American scientist, 10 American philanthropist, 10 American outstanding entrepreneurs etc etc. I can also name 10 ethnic groups that escaped wars based on religion that found a new home in America, and the name of 10 countries that were saved by America or were part of the Marshal plan during and after WW2. Yes, indeed the imbalance is crazy.

So, Buddhist meditation is sitting with "the feeling" until you notice that "the feeling" is changing of its own accord and the fundamental nature of everything is change and is impermanent and is emptiness. And the whole dream of your life that you thought was real was just a dream until you wake up and say, "Oh, yeah, it was just a dream. And now I'm awake." That's the first turning of the Dharma. This video is so satisfying and laid back, and doesn't even reflect half of Nathaniel's content quality, which is what I want to comment on. I just want to let you know, Nathaniel, that I am a huge fan of yours. The cinematography of your videos, the content you offer, how passionate you seem but especially your mind are incredibly inspiring. I hope to see this comment and get reminded once again how you inspire others and that what you're doing is definitely worth it. I hope you keep evolving, creating content, and enjoying what you put out as much as I enjoy watching it. Cheers!

I think the difference on a foreigner criticizing the US and a foreigner criticizing Argentina, for exemple, is the fact that everything that the US does, it affects the rest of the world, in a good but most commonly in a bad way, cause America comes always first, no matter if the progress for americans will mean the destruction of the rest of the world. By that being said, I think anyone should be defensive when someone else is talking about your country, but not Americans, cause what the US does is actually what is gonna rule what is gonna happen in the rest of the world, which means, we all should be criticizing America.
@babyxkande
@babyxkande 3 года назад
I think that’s true that what they do will impact central and South America. But I don’t think their actions will always impact the rest of the world. America is very powerful now but they have not always been and that can change
@saoirsek576
@saoirsek576 3 года назад
I agree with this but I see a huge difference in someone from a country the US heavily effects negatively criticizing the US and it’s international actions as opposed to someone from Western Europe or Canada making fun of the American health system, school shootings, the failures of the American education system, etc. (which I see so much of) when those things are 1. Not in control of the citizens because of our electoral system and 2. Negatively affect Americans more than they affect others. I get defensive about the latter but the former is completely justified imo.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I would say it's a combination of the conversational style of videos from Damon paired with Nathaniel's style. It's thoughtful, entertaining and inviting. Also, I feel that there was a range of emotions that flowed with the conversation so both people moved from heavy focus, excitement, banter, philosophy... It was just great, okay!

This was such a great video. I could feel myself itching to join the conversations the whole time because I swear all of the topics you covered have been taking up SO much space in my brain for the last 6+ months, and I found myself enthusiastically agreeing with or having questions or thoughts about everything you both discussed. I wanted to comment on the different topics but I feel like I'd end up writing a dissertation in the process, so instead I'll just say that I thoroughly enjoyed this and hope to see more videos like this in the future with other creators. I just happened to watch Ashley's (bestdressed) Paris vlog with Damon a few days ago, and it was my first intro to him and his channel, and I was so excited to see this one now, too! What an inspiring, kind, and personable group of creators you all are. Grateful to have found you in the last few months and looking forward to more of these!

It is so freaking true that we're not really using technology to our advantage. We use it to improve and speed up our personal daily lives, but other than that I feel like we really haven't done much to progress humanity. When Elon Musk created Space X there was no competition and NASA wasn't even doing too much to progress space travel. I think there needs to be more people like Elon who use the newest technology to move the needle forwards instead of using technology selfishly. Also, what a great conversation.

This is by far my favorite video of yours. The others are EXCELLENT, and this one is the cherry on the cake. You provoke so many thoughts in my head, and hearing your ideas boucing back and forth between you two was so inspiring. You manage to be down to earth yet far beyond our known Universe sometimes, what a true pleasure to have the chance to notice some of your mind wonderings. Thank you for putting this type of content out there, transpiring authenticity, spirituality, and touching on heavy topic with a beautiful lightness. Keep doing you. And enjoy Paris :) I recommend Charles Bradley's song "Why is it so hard" to contribute to the reflection on pride VS gratefulness about America. I'm French myself, lived in the US for a while, and sometimes struggling with this dichotomy. Merci d'exister devant nos yeux

I find extremely dizzying to think about the fact that most of us, especially during this time, have allocated a mental space (for me it's a big space lol) to think about things happening virtually. It's just so crazy that most of the time in a day I'm thinking about a conversation between two people I "know" virtually and about what the other people like me are talking about in a virtual discussion. My mind is occupied by things that don't exist outside my phone or computer. Like, in my mind, I live on the internet.
