WOW! That's me on piano and backing vocals. What an amazing opportunity touring with Billy! Every night hearing 'Shirley' etc... Then I went on to help out with his albums 'Don't Try this at Home'. He's a National Treasure, it was such a dream performing with him - such an inspiration! Total respect!
@@JonBridges66 Here yes, but on the record Carla Tivey sang the vocals! She was mega pregnant in 1988 so I got the chance to step into her shoes! Amazing!
While I've met Billy recently, haven't listened to these songs in ages. Found myself here by accident, realising how well they hold up and your contribution is remarkable. lovely playing.
Tender Comrade Ex Serviceman here, Returned as well. Not gay. Standing in my kitchen balling my eyes out. This man's a true gem. Can't wait until my own kids, daughter and sons are old enough to explain the importance of such an amazing piece of work. Been a Billy Bragg fan for nearly 30 years and never heard that song. The Union makes us strong by the way.
Thank you to wunh 91.3 university of new hampshire for introducing me to this man and the great leap forwards back in 1988.Workers playtime album was in my collection the next day.I was fascinated by this strong english accent and tender heart felt words. When i hear this song 30 years later"the only one"how the memories fly me back to 20 years old.
Yep…similar story here. In the mid-‘80’s I was a student at Penn State (I was a BIG fan of The Clash and had grown up listening to my parent’s folk music) when I first heard Billy on campus radio WPSU. “Who is this guy that combines elements of punk with folk?!”, I wondered…I’ve been a fan ever since!
was in London at this time and a friend took me to see The Pogues live at a mosh pit concert and later that night i found out we coulda gone to see billy bragg and i just about lost my mind!!!
Saw him around this time in New Zealand.. so good, I’ve been a fan since I first heard him. Now I’m sharing his music with my own teenager who’s loving it too!!
I think I was in the audience, I was a broke London student bedist wall plastered with talking to the taxman poster and I had the same haircut. Plenty to be ashamed of from that period BB not one of them though, I'm not interested how nice his house in Dorset is as long as he pays his taxes and keeps on keeping the bastards honest.
Unless our Bill motivated you to actually spend an hour a week helping the weak, you didn't get the message. You've got time for Ted Lasso? You've got an hour to spare for the downtrodden. And, Lorraine -- you are a gift to the world. Delighted to hear your contributions.
"There is nothing safe in watching TV." Good. TV costs $100/mo. in my city. That's okay because if I hear people talking I like having the choice of speaking back.
That's about it. He has a big bum. It takes more than good intentions and a big bloke at the door to get inside. I never wanted inside so I don't pretend to know what it takes. But he has a big bum. This is proved by TV.
