When tensions were growing with Mahavishnu, Billy began work and released this solo work. It was Tommy Bolin who recorded this with Billy adding his rock style influence on guitar in a bit of a fusion moment. Billy is the drummer. Definitely check out Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's doing this....

Although this is a great performance, the studio version is 1000 times better. This is watered down. The original has different musicians performing and more intense by far. If you really want to see Billy Cobham at his most amazing best, and you happen to be a little adventurous, you have to dive into The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Probably their second album Birds of Fire. There you'll encounter the world's most jaw-dropping guitarist, be prepared, and Billy Cobham's drumming is an amazing powerhouse!

Those calling for you to here this song and album with Tommy Bolin playing lead guitar are 1000% correct! Often live cuts turn things up a notch. Not so here. Tommy Bolin is essential listening for this, and every other album that he played on. He was a one of a kind musician. They broke the mold with that kid. It is outstanding that you got to see Billy live in this setting so I’m not going to complain but just to let you know, the original studio version (1973) has our man Tommy Bolin on guitar and the famous Jan Hammer on keyboards. You DEFINITELY should check that out. And for my money even more so check out the version of this live under the title “Tommy Bolin and friends”, it’s great, the guitar in that. Seriously, check out those two versions. I would say even a reaction to the live Tommy Bolin one is called for., maybe both, and you could have a comparison of all three. Why not? Hello, love your channel but I would say this was not the version to do. I understand you did not know this before reacting. Will you please do the original song off the Spectrum album 1973 with Tommy Bolin on guitar. This album Spectrum and guitarist Tommy is the reason why Jeff Beck went the route of Jazz fusion. Jeff still plays Stratus at live concerts to this day because of his love for Tommy. Prince even played Stratus many times live. Interesting note is Tommy Bolin died on tour opening for Jeff Beck in Dec 1976. You did Tommy Bolin "Post Toastee" not long ago. I saw him live with The Mahavishnu Orchestra around 1972 or 1973 in Pittsburgh. I was mainly into big band jazz although I had been exposed to Miles Davis Bitches Brew so I was aware of the trends jazz was making into fusion. Billy playing his clear double bass drum Fibes drumset was mind blowing to say the least. Find some of his live Mahavishnu videos to experience the power he displayed. This is funky but more mellow and Billy is not as physically into the playing as he looks so relaxed. With Mahavishnu he put his whole body into his playing.

He played with and was heavily influenced by the legendary Miles Davis. The album this track is from is called SPECTRUM...and yeah, jazz fusion. Released in 1973. I don’t know if that’s how you found it, but I’m just glad you have! You’re going to love it.......And last but certainly not least...my favorite bassist is on this album; the amazing Leland (Lee) Sklar! Disappointed that he is not here......but he did craft the studio version. Chod, and any of the rest of you interested in this group, here is a link to The Wikipedia info on it. According to Sklar, the album was recorded in two days, with the first or second run through being the album release. Recorded live....en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_(Billy_Cobham_album)

Billy Cobham played with many jazz greats on the CTI label, people like George Benson, Gabor Szabo & Freddie Hubbard. And later famously drummed for Mahavishnu Orchestra. The original of this was on one of his solo records. He went fusion. Try anything from Mahavishnu from one of the best fusion albums ever made, Visions of the Emerald Beyond. It features 2 of the greatest virtuosos in jazz, John MacLauchlan (Gtr) and Jean-Luc Ponty (Violin). And the drummer, Nerada Michael Walden (Journey), will blow your mind.

I saw The Mahavishnu Orchestra in their first NYC performance and then proceeded to see them twice more. Billy has very quick hands and yes, he was muscular lumberjack and was personally responsible for global warming. He's still alive and of course has become a much better and more subtle drummer since, but he sure was exciting. Soon after I became interested in Tony Williams (who had even quicker hands) saw him with John Mclauglin and Jack Bruce, retraced his career through Miles, and the rest is history.

Billy Cobham's great - agree with the others that it should've been the studio version instead! New recommendation: Legends - Put It Where You Want It - /watch?v=hMfalO9ILUA Marcus Miller, Steve Gadd, Eric Clapton, Joe Sample and David Sanborn... rarely has a name been as appropriate as is "Legends" for this ensemble of, well, musical legends

I MISSED THIS! So glad you got to it! Anything off Spectrum is premium fusion! Awwww, dawg... you did a live version, which is awesome, but that studio version was Cobham, Jan Hammer, Tommy Bolin and Leland Sklar and it was 2nd or 3rd take energy and fresh as a peach! This is great, but Cobham is older and this was a great jam, but grades off.

Not the same with Tommy Bolin on guitar. The studio version with Cobham, Bolin, Sklar, and Hammer is an all time classic for jazz fusion fans

The studio version with Tommy Bolin playing guitar was the best version of this song, although Jeff Beck does a great version to.

The couple of reactions I've seen of yours dealing with Jazz/Fusion make me wonder what you mean by "the jazz I grew up with" or the Jazz I play" To not know Cobham or Corea or Di Meola Stanley Clarke is shocking. What do you define as "Jazz" because these guys come from and played Jazz longer than you've been around and only play Fusion at certain times of their careers. Just wondering.

Wow! The studio version is much better! Jan Hammer on keyboards, and Tommy Bolin on guitar! Sorry, the studio version off the album of the same name is way better! Do yourself a favor and check it out!
