Welcome to this exciting episode of wildwestfaces, in this account we listen to the true account of Billy Dixon.
Billy and his 28 comrades were staying at the settlement of Adobe Walls in Hutchinson county Texas when they were attacked by over seven hundred Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors.
Over three days the warriors kept up the attack and suffered heavy losses, the hunters also lost men as the battled to defend their small sanctuary.
On the morning of the third day , 15 Indian warriors rode out on a bluff nearly a mile away to survey the situation. Encouraged by one of the hunters, Dixon, a crack shot, took aim with a rifle that he had borrowed from another hunter and cleanly dropped a warrior from atop his horse. "I was admittedly a good marksman, yet this was what might be called a 'scratch' shot."
Seeing their fellow warrior killed from such a distance discouraged the Indians and they left the hunters and gave up the fight.
Please sit back and enjoy this episode of Wildwestfaces

Greetings from Australia. I grew up on a cane farm but we hosted an exchange student from Texas when I was a kid. He was from Brownsville TX and for hours he would tell me Texan history. Finally about 30 years later I got to see many of the places he told me about. Texans are damn good proud friendly folk. I had a great time and I found Texan attitude kind of like us . In fact I find most Yanks are damn good people. God Bless the Lone Star state.

Brownsville Texas, the Tip of Texas. Located in the Rio Grande Valley , I lived in Weslaco, also in the R.G.V. Glad ya like us, we kinda feel the same way towards the Land Down Under. I almost got to check Australia off my bucket list but just before my leave of absence was to start I ended up in the hospital following a recuse of a person from their burning vehicle. Never did get down there for my 6 months stay.

The battle site is open for visitors. It is outside of Stinnett, Texas on the Turkey Track Ranch. Monuments are there to commemorate the buffalo hunters and the Indians. Billy Dixon’s grave is at the site also. The mesa is a long way off which makes Billy’s shot all the more impressive.

My wife and I managed the HQ of the Turkey Track Ranch which is where the Battles of Adobe Walls took place. I would often drive our John Deere down to the site, using the Brushhog attachment would clear the area so visitors could walk around the site. I would often look towards the mesa where the Medicine Man sat on the day Billy shot him and think.. That's a helluva shot. There's a hill just south- southwest of the site that hides Billy's house. He settled there and built a home for his wife. The ranch still uses it for a ranch hand. The headquarters is only a few miles from the site but is well hidden and off limits. We retired and left the Panhandle with memories that we will always have.

At the Star of the Republic museum at Washington on thr Brazos State Park in Washington Tx thery have Billy Dixons revolver on display. There are no manufacturers marking on it. I took several photos of it and showed them to several rare weapons collectors I knew. (On a side note one of those collectors had purchased a Colt Walker revolver that been dug up after many years in the ground. It was inbad contition but still it was easily identified as a Walker Colt.) Back to Dixons revolver, all agreed it was probably assembled from parts from several other guns by a gunsmith in Mexico. I wish I could find those photos now. I live about 75 miles east of Washington Tx and need to stop in and re photograph the revolver. Another scrape Dixon had with indians was The Battle of Upper Washita River on September 12 1874. Dixon and Amos Chapman along with 6 shoulders were surrounded by aprox 125 Comanche and Kiowa indians. This battle was also in the Texas panhandle about 22 miles SE of Canadian Tx😮

Very good summation of the battle and historical correct. Dixons shot had to be very lucky as an open sight on the buffalo rifle had to be raised way above the Indian or group of Indians he shot at. He admitted this later in his biography. My family is mentioned in his book as the first "small ranchers" in the Panhandle 1982. They settled in an area called "chicken creek" and stayed there for many years.

There was a scene in Outlaw Josie Wales where Josey (Clint Eastwood) said when times look like you ain't gonna make it you gotta get mean plum mad dog mean and I think this is surely what these men did. About the dangling scalps. The Brits said the French taught the Indians. In the program entitled Centennial Jake Pasquenl says the white man taught the indians.
@wildwestfaces
@wildwestfaces 10 дней назад
Yes I have read that but it is actually incorrect. The Crow creek massacre happened arrows the mid 1400s, long before the white man set foot on the continent. Archaeologists from the University of South Dakota, directed by project director Larry J. Zimmerman, field director Thomas Emerson, and osteologist P. Wille, found the remains of at least 486 people killed during the attack. Most of these remains showed signs of ritual mutilation, particularly scalping. It makes fascinating reading ! The account of this shot never appeared until after Dixon’s death. Further Numerous people there at the time never mentioned it. Including no less than “Bat” Masterson. Who I would have thought would have written about it. Since it vern appeared any where previous to the publishing of “The Life of Billy Dixon”. This cause me wonder if its based on a VERY similar occurrence in 1874 in Montana. Which was witnessed and written about at the time such as the Bozeman, Montana newspaper. This was done by a man named Jack Bean who had a Sharps in 44-2 5/8” case with a telescopic sight. It is detailed in “The 1874 Invasion of Montana: A Prelude to the Custer Disaster” by Don L. Weibert. It was only through Weibert’s research that this resurfaced. Franking given the lack of supporting evidence, I think the Dixon shot was something fabricated after his death.
