The Irish-British identity is something people used to be proud of, The men who died for Ulster in the Somme seen themselves as Irish. Its sad that this has been repressed because of the conflict , but also nice to see that more people are openly identifying this way again. (Im Irish nationalist, just have respect for my fellow Irish people of different persuasions)

Consider these facts: Billy Hutchinson murdered two Catholics on their way to work in a sectarian attack in 1974, spent 15 years in jail, consistently backed the peace process, became the leader of the Progressive Unionist Party, chose a Catholic writer and a Kildare publisher for his memoir, would accept a vote for Irish unity - and still justifies his murders.
He said the PUP produced a document aimed at catholics, that they were better off in the Union. Then the UVF went out and slaughtered innocent catholics.
Regarding the two half-brothers Billy was convicted of murdering, I couldn't find a single death notice for either man, Michael Loughran or Edward Morgan, in the British Newspaper Archive or Irish Newspaper Archive. Even if I could, a death notice is simply not evidence of membership of a paramilitary organisation. Billy is deluding himself that either man he murdered, distant relatives of Gusty Spence, were involved in republicanism in any way. Both men were murdered at a time when pairs of Catholic workers were being murdered by loyalist teams. It was crude sectarian murder, part of a strategy that was so stupid and flawed it would be amusing were it not so cruel/
His ignorance of the South is laughable, and it's hard to take him seriously as if people dont live in poverty in the north. The south is far richer than the north. It’s interesting to hear the description of his treatment by the army and RUC when he was arrested. Clearly it wasn’t just republicans who were brutalised by the security forces, loyalists were mistreated also.
They have to say that though, don't they? To say anything else would confirm that the police and army were in league with loyalists and there was state wide persecution of Catholics. It wouldn't fit their narrative that they are the ones who are besieged.

The UDR was riven with members of the UVF. The RUC was described as an almost paramilitary organisation by high profile members of the police in London.

Unionists didn’t want Cavan, Donegal or Monaghan because if they were partitioned then this would have resulted in a Catholic majority. Some hardline Unionists also didn’t want to partition Tyrone and Fermanagh also because of the number of Catholics in those counties. Northern Ireland is the most loyal part of Britain? Geography not your strong point either? Northern Ireland is not part of Britain. Northern Ireland is in the United Kingdom, not Britain. You really are not a great advertisement for the British educational system.

I was an apprentice in the early eighties 1980 to 84 and it didn't matter where you worked h&w ballylumford ps and other places , it was all decked out in loyalist, unionist , uda, uvf flags etc that's the workplace the cabins we had our breaks in were worse , very intimidating for a young catholic, but what I did notice and understand was it wasn't for the likes of me it was ment for, but for the average protestant working man to keep them in line
