Amidst the recurring threats posed by Islamist extremists against MPs, rapidly changing demographics, and the overshadowing influence of foreign wars in Gaza and the middle east on English elections, can England survive as a nation? To answer, Steven Edginton is joined by the historian and author of The English and Their History, Robert Tombs.
“It's not the case since the 17th century that quite small religious minorities have been able to exert a pretty startling political impact. You might think of Guy Fawkes, and the Gunpowder Plotters or you might think of the Puritans and the origins of the Civil War against Charles I. But, we did think, I suppose, that religion, or at least religious extremism had left our politics really, in the 17th century.”
“This was rather like the violence that led up to the Great Reform Bill, in the early 1830s, when you did have major public unrest, rioting, the burning down of the Palace of the Bishop of Bristol. A general sense of the country was on the verge of revolution, and the direct threat of revolutionary violence did really cow Parliament into accepting that it would adopt reform. The House of Lords was the one that stood out against it, but they too were eventually cowed, not so much by popular violence, though that might have happened eventually, but by the King, William IV, deciding that he would, if necessary, create peers to overthrow their majority.”
“This combination of what you might call legitimate protest, though, on a scale that we rarely see so repetitively, and I think in some ways the repetition of it is what makes the impact, mixed with a penumbra of extremism which could include violence, against individual MPs or against Parliament, or indeed, of course, it could lead to terrorist action of the sort we've been warned about as a growing danger. So I think this is a rather different phenomenon from that of the Suffragettes, the Chartists, and it goes back, I think I might say we probably haven't seen quite this since the 17th century.”

Enoch Powell was only wrong on one thing. He didn't think that we would be foolish enough to import Islam.
@golfbulldog
@golfbulldog 6 месяцев назад
True, but, in general terms, he covered this when he talked about the moves emerging to prevent integration in UK life: "now we are seeing a growth of positive forces acting against integration, of vested interests in the preservation and sharpening of racial and religious differences..." and then goes on to quote John Stonehouse's speech which uses Sikhs as an example, but we see the exact same thing with Islam in the UK. He would be shocked by the identity politics we see now.

I'm afraid this speaker is massively under-playing the problem. When I was younger, I would go to a nearby city and see a handful of ethnic minorities but never hear foreign languages spoken. I would never have heard people calling for Jihad on the streets of London for example. When I recently went to that same city for the first time in 20 years, I realised I was the only Caucasian person in the whole street. This was a very large main city centre street at night and there were no other native British people. I don't mind the idea of migration at all as long as it is controlled and as long as it is made clear to everyone who comes that they are expected to learn our language, norms and be subject to our laws. There are laws against calling for violence against Jews here but we seem not to enforce them out of fear of the religious group chanting for it. Enoch Powell might well have made it difficult to discuss migration sensibly but he wasn't wrong. He was just 40 years early. There will be blood in the streets. It's only a matter of time unless we can come to some kind of understanding. In a country where it is impossible to criticise Islam, I don't see how.

The problem is the large scale introduction of an incompatible culture. Previous waves of recent immigration have been from broadly similar cultures (Christian) so assimilation has happened fairly smoothly and quickly. With Islam we have radically different values (consider women's rights or religious tolerance) - will integration happen or is a conflict inevitable? World history suggests cultural conflicts rarely resolve peacefully.

I had personal friend Jew's & Afro Caribbean's who moved to Leeds & Sikh's who moved to Leicester. Bradford is now left with area's where Muslims live & Non Muslims live in other area's. REFERENDUM on MASS IMMIGRATION
@user-bs3fh7xn2s
@user-bs3fh7xn2s 6 месяцев назад
But the sheer scale of immigration is of utterly different orders now. I read that in terms of the Jewish immigration in Victorian times it totalled under 200,000 people over many decades. Yet now we have net immigration of 600-700,000 people EACH YEAR. In my home city we now have one MPs constituency that at the last Census was only 17% white English and in the city as a whole the native English are now below half of the population. Such change cannot be absorbed.
@kitkat253
@kitkat253 6 месяцев назад
It’s more relevant to quote gross inward migration numbers since that is the subject. Everyone blithely talks of net migration which is misleading and loose talk. The migration numbers in are over ONE million per annum now. These fleeing are most likely the rich and well off and are being replaced by the other end of the spectrum. This should help to focus the brain, if nothing else can. The incoming will not be buying the homes of the departed rich. The rich were likely using private healthcare services, those coming in are heaping on to the waiting NHS’s lists. This will exacerbate in coming 15 years. It will not be a pretty sight. No, Farrago has not the slightest idea what to do about it? Nor does Suella. They have not even understand only deportation to 1945 status quo ante will return old Britain. This is the scale of the problem. By all means vote Reform but don’t descend into utter fantasyland and expect things to change. Happy Weekend.

It is possible that different people can integrate into the country. But it's the scale of the immigration and that many are coming from Islamic countries that have as we see on our streets each week have become a 5th column. THEY are not integrating but live in whole towns that are all Muslim. We see it in Bradford, and they have a huge influence in the city. The police are afraid of them and its plain for all to see. London is lost to the foreign nationals that have come in and their loyal to their own communities but not to Britan. How many of them sign up for the Police or the Army? It's come back to bite us and it has gone worse.

Would agree that a degree of integration is possible in some cases, but even if 100% integration of all immigrants were possible in 100% of all cases, the point is that there is far too much immigration in the first place and it needs to be stopped, and then a lot of people need to be sent back!

Robert Tombs is wrong to say that we as English do not have a racial and National identity the Angles and Saxons were Northern Europeans the Vikings likewise, the Normans although settled in what is now France were Vikings of Northern European heritage. The influx of non Europeans mainly, most recently, from the Indian Sub Continent, East and West Africa overwhelmingly of the Muslim Faith. The most recent immigrants have not and do not integrate, dominate certain towns and cities and implement their own faith based laws and as such can never be confused for being English

I greatly admire men like Robert Tombs, I have read many articles by him but this is the first time I have seen him speak. I would guess that he would be described elsewhere as pale, male and stale which shows how our culture is sinking. A civilised country would revere their elders for their knowledge and experience. Ours now gripes about white supremacy while overlooking the simple truth that it has been white men who have created the modern world. This is the legacy of our failing education system. When I was at school in the 1980s, teachers would spend more time telling us the evils of Keith Joseph than what we were supposed to be learning. Now it seems that the profession has moved on to our colonial sins and white privilege. I grieve for the country we have lost.

Rishi Sunak was born in England. That seems to be where his Englishness ends. His parents, not English. He chose to live in the US & he married an Indian. She, on legal documents has stated that she has no intention of settling (or paying tax) in the UK. I would be astonished if in 2 years from now, Sunak is not living in the US or in India. Sunak is importing vast numbers of Indian Hindu's (they vote Conservative). That is not in the UK interest. His first action was to do the Windsor Agreement which was not in the interest of the country he won't be living in. One of the first things he did was to go to the Indian sub continent & make positive sounds on the UK paying reparations.

It is entirely disingenuous of the interviewer to compare the IRA mentioned at 4:08 to what is currently happening in the UK today in regards to Islamic radicalization . The IRA had never in it's history sought to bring down the UK establishment per se save for the Brirish occupation in the north of Ireland. The existence of the IRA was to solely dis-establish the UK's hold on what they rightfully and correctly deemed as historically Irish territory . Most of the English population polled over decades concurred with that claim contrary to the parliament of the UK. The radicalisation of Islam in the UK will conclude with an internal civil war within the UK, and that is the supposition being discussed here . Robert Tombs is correct in comparing the dangers of today's UK potential for civil war with the 17 century radicals of Guy Fawkes and Oliver Cromwell and their Catholic and Putitan militant radicals respectively. Radical Islam and their militant supporters have both openly declared their intentions to surplant the UK parliament and it's citizenry with their radical religious beliefs and tennets. This was never the case with the IRA. The claim for Irish independence never in it's historical struggle conceived or had as it's core tennet the idea of promoting a UK civil war, the take-over of a UK parliament, or radicalisation of its citizenry to a religious or political pursuasion, but merely for the withdraw of UK occupation of Irish territory. Their is no compromise with Guy Fawkes' ideology, Cromwell's ideology nor radical Islamic ideology. Their was compromise however with the IRA, and it's proof is in today's established and long reigning peace accords and government shared by both sides of the conflict that we enjoy today in the north of Ireland.

Islam has a strong position on everything, and the weakness of Britain’s moral position enables the infiltration of multiple stronger positions which have now overwhelmed the Country. But at the root is your moral and political hypocrisy. Because money and power for a select elite class has always been prioritised over the welfare of the general population. Atheist Richard Dawkins said on Easter Sunday that he identifies as a “cultural Christian,” prefers to live in a country based on Christian principles and would not want the UK to become an Islamic nation. Speaking to LBC Radio’s Rachel Johnson, sister of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Dawkins said that he was “slightly horrified” that Ramadan lights were put up in London instead of Easter ones. When pressed by Johnson on whether he saw the decline in church attendance and the increasing numbers of Islamic mosques being built across Europe as a problem, the professor said: “Yes I do”. Stating that he would have to choose his words “carefully” perhaps in light of the attack on fellow New Atheist Salmon Rushdie in 2022 by a radical Islamist, Dawkins said: “If I had to choose between Christianity and Islam, I would choose Christianity every single time”. “It seems to be a fundamentally decent religion that I think Islam is not. There is an active hostility to women which is promoted by the holy books of Islam.
