Am I the only one who thinks this is album is such an under appreciated gem. Billy Joel himself doesn’t even like this album I can’t understand why it’s so good.

apparently it was recorded too fast when initially released, so that probably had a large part of him not liking it

I personally think that there are a couple of standout tracks and the rest are very good in their own right, but I suspect maybe Billy feels they are all decent standalone songs in isolation but he is not overly enamoured by them collectively all being on the same album.

My 28 year old son just died a week ago. Two days before his 29th birthday. I've been listening to Billy Joel for days. It speaks to me as a pianist...and he is filling spaces I can't quite play yet.

That reminds me of a similar line in a very different song, "The Oranges", by Brian Woodbury: "I had the blues for a little while. Those blues, they didn't get me anywhere." Pretty much the same sentiment.

I personally think it's his best album. Apart from "she's got a way" which sounds different on the radio, I was unfamiliar when I got this album on a 3 cd set of this, also including the bridge and river of dreams. But this album has stood out to me

Know it’s been posted here, but I just love that lyric; “I was dreamin’ of tomorrow so I sacrificed today, and it sure was a grand waste of time.” It hit me really hard because it feels like recently I’ve been laying out what this perfect future will be for me. I’m giving it all my brain power to my future self. And there’s only so much you can do right now sure, but I’m almost throwing myself away and ambushing my potential that I have right now. That lyric is just hitting me pretty deep right about now.

The album Cold Spring Harbor has a very strong finish, and I would consider the final 3 songs to be linked together as part of a story. Possibly the entire album is meant to be a story, but the final 3 songs really seem to fit together as a "piece". Does anyone else feel that way? "Tomorrow Is Today" is where the singer goes through his period of angst and depression, including suicidal thoughts (see Billy's own biography at this point). "Nocturne" is a brief period of time passing overnight or over several nights. Then "Got To Begin Again" is the singer having made it through the depression, recognizing what he's been through and looking forward in his life. i don't know if Billy meant for these 3 final songs to be linked together as a "story" but I'm guessing that this was his intention.

@Andrew Furst, I totally agree! I thought I was the only one thinking those three songs were absolutely meant to fit together, and that it was done that way intentionally to tell a story. It’s so powerful and deep. After the turmoil that is “Tomorrow,” you have “Nocturne” where he is processing his emotions through music alone without words. Then the fever breaks with “Got to Begin Again” where he is tentatively hopeful, aware he must start over but also expressing how hard it is to do. Such an incredible emotional ride, and really masterfully done. I also agree the whole album seems to be woven together as a story, based on his life experiences then. He did a wonderful job, in my opinion.
