Back when songs were stories. Written by people who lived them. IRL FTW BTW my sis and I went to his concert in Dallas in the 80s, and we both fell asleep. Don't judge, we were both kids and tired as hell hours before; it was NOT Billy's fault. I awoke halfway through this song. And I'll never forget it. BJ's Moscow concert was one of the only CDs that survived our house being broken into back in 1990 and I still have it. My favorite version of Goodnight Saigon.

I interpret this song as one about broken dreams, whatever they are. And we all have them, and this song is about how we are not alone in our feelings of longing, regrets and disappointment. Only a fortunate few live the life they dreamt of.

I once upon a time was one of these men. I got out of the marines in Sept 71 and people really didn't like us Vietnam veterans too well. For 10 years I worked during the day and closed the bars at night and then one day this lovely woman walked into my life. I've loved her ever since. Within 3 months of our first date we were engaged and 9 months after our first date we were married. We have been happily married since Sept 3, 1981. For some time she would when we went to bed have to listen to my rants about the war and coming home. After a while when I calmed down she would kiss me and hold me. I guess I had PTSD and just didn't know it. Now she is in a nursing home with dementia and MS. I see her every day but I miss her so much.

I think my favorite thing is how every verse is sad. Some of its obvious like the bartender who thinks he could make it in hollywood if he could get out of this place, but then you get subtle stuff like how paul is a real estate novelist. Thats not a thing. Thats the kind of thing you say to a guy at the bar to pretend to be someone successful. And being in the navy for life isnt automatically a bad thing, but you can tell he is a life long deck swabber, not a guy staying in there as he moves up the ladder and becomes an admiral or something. Just all of it, the closest thing they have to being happy is getting drunk and losing themselves to a good melody for a few minutes. And the song itself is melancholy in lyrical form.

It’s 2020 and while music culture has changed so much everyone can agree that this is one of the greatest of all time and that Billy Joel was/is one of the greatest as well.

Sometimes it's great and refreshing to have a music video that is a literal interpretation of the song lyrics.

This song seems to me as kind of a love letter to music. How a bunch of completely different people come together, just to listen to some really great music and forget about all the shit in their lifes. Beautiful song and it gets me really melancholic for some reason.
