I was there with my 14 year old daughter... who love's Billy Joel.... And also loves Olivia Rodrigo.... This took a magical night ...and shot it to the moon.... I love how Billy brought the younger generation to his show.... We will never forget this priceless experience. Then to top it off ....Olivia goes back to her seat and she's only 5 seats away from us ...and we didn't even realize it. .... And she just happens to be hanging out with Conan Gray. ... My daughter almost fainted.
This is like a Tim McGraw moment of Taylor Swift. Same humble beginnings. This is such a sweet moment of Olivia and Billy Joel. I love to see music uniting different generations.
@@courtneyharrell7758 most ppl thought Taytay couldn't sing well at the beginning of her career so give it time....they are singer/songwriters/artists it's not always about having the best voice.....Olivia is gorgeous, adorable, great stage presence and a talented songwriter....her vocals will only keep getting better with time, watch this space 😍
Taylor Swift is a Communist. She should stick with music and keep her politics to herself. Bruck Springsteen lost a lot of fans due to mixing Politics with Music.
Don't forget Alanis Morissette and Natalie Imbruglia! Olivia has collaborated with legends. I'd love to see her singing with Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch too.
I am glad he is doing Uptown Girl again. For many years he would not sing this song as it made him too sad after his divorce for Christy Brinkley. Really interesting to see him sing this classic song with Oliva Rodrigo and they fun they had with it. Obviously practiced this before doing it with the timing but amazing none the less.
I have a new found respect for Olivia Rodrigo. That young lady showed much respect for the legendary Billy Joel. She also blew me away with how effortlessly she sang “Uptown Girl.” Excellent moment in music.
@@charliepierson6442 I didn’t say she sang it well. I give her credit for, 1. referencing a legend like Billy Joel in her own song…and 2. for paying respect to Billy Joel and going to his concert to sing with him. 3. Knowing all the words. She’s a young woman at least 2 generations removed from Mr. Joel. It’s awesome that she respects her elders and their music. You can be a negative Nancy if you want. I elect to focus on the positive; life’s too short to be a curmudgeon.
@@emmett6059 I grew up and worked in the music industry for 15 years. My father was a music producer and promoter for almost 40 years. Musicians forget words to THEIR OWN songs frequently. In fact, some use karaoke type monitors as a “security blanket” so they don’t messed up. One day of rehearing wouldn’t help most people memorize most songs. She pulled that off in front of 10s of thousands of people. You sound like a contrarian, and that’s your right. I’m a positive person. I applaud Olivia’s effort. She might not have an amazing voice like Linda Ronstadt, but the young lady showed heart and a love of music. Any music lover should respect and appreciate that. Take care. PS: trying being positive for a change.
How about we focus on her beautiful hair? It has gotten longer since the Tour. She should let it grow about four inches below her waist but I suppose she is a stickler on avoiding split ends, etc. Well, that takes care of my fashion input for the day.
@@potatoesareyummy981 To see how awful she was. I have since watched a few other live performances and she was actually ok in those. I am just fascinated by fandom. And how people that are fans can not hear when she sounds so bad. We all have our off days, but as a famous singer, I thought this woman should have been able to handle the occasion a little better vocally. He could have pulled anybody out of the crowd and they could have done just as good a job.
My little sister was there, and told me about this, so I had to look it up. Glad I did, smiled from ear to ear the whole time. Olivia looks absolutely thrilled to be up there with him. I grew up listening to Billy Joel. It makes me happy to see the younger generation enjoying him as much as I did at their age.
I know her music is marketed for young girls but she’s a generational talent. She’s going the distance and if people like Billy Joel are onboard for the ride then so am I.
I love when this happens! 2 artists you never would imagine coming together perform each other’s songs on the same stage! One of my favorites was Taylor Swift performing with Def Leppard. This one definitely makes my list! What an amazing performance from Billy and Olivia!
I'm a life long Billy Joel lover, and I think this was fantastic. One thing I love about this generation of young people , is that they enjoy the music of my generation and recogognize the amazing amount of great music it produced. It can only be a good thing that great like Billy get together with up & comers & share the stage. Perfect!
first time in 32 years I think. I looked for old recordings and the last time I could find Billy singing Uptown Girl in the original key was 1990. Then Billy took it off the setlist for a while and in 2001 he sang it in a lower key.
I’m currently in high school and this is just so cool to me. One of the biggest artists of my generation singing with one of the biggest artists from my grandparents generation, truly incredible. Both Billy and Olivia are two of my favorite artists of all time and to see them perform together is just a dream come true.
Sam, I’m 72, and this is just so cool to me too. Something magical in this clip. Keep your head on straight in this crazy world, as I’m sure your grandparents tell you.
I had no clue who Olivia was.....until last night at the "Garden". Her voice and delivery was from the heart and unfiltered. Thank Billy for your ability to keep us entertained. Loved the led zepplin and Martha and the Vandellas throw back too!
Billy has the best job at this point in his life. He plays in his own backyard in New York once a month and can invite any guest to make every show unique
This is honestly so heart warming. She went from idolising billy Joel and writing about him in one of her songs which happened to be the song that goes absolutely viral and she now gets the perform that song and sing WITH billy joel in one of his concerts😭that’s amazing 💞
i saw a lot of people on twitter saying her performance was bad, but i think it was pretty decent overall. sure there were some times where her voice didn’t hit the right notes, but it could probably be chalked up to nervousness, lack of rehearsal, not being able to hear herself, literally anything. even if it is your profession, everyone is able to mess up sometimes and that’s ok. she obviously has some skill when it comes to this though i’m not denying that
@@jessica3218 19 is not that young..there are so many younger artists who sing better than her. Also if she's that young and has to learn a lot then she should probably do that first. We expect much better from a Grammy winner. Age has nothing to do with that.
I love that Billy Joel is being supportive of these incredibly talented young women, inviting Olivia on stage, praising Taylor's songwriting. So many people love to tear young female singers down... *cough* Damon Albarn *cough* take note.
@@kant12 I do appreciate your comment and agree somewhat. But her recordings will be full of auto tune but then again most are these days. It's the fact she can barely hit a note live that I am referring to. I'd prefer the auto tune tbh otherwise I may as well go down the local karaoke bar with these vocals.
@@kant12 I just watched drivers licence performed live and I take everything back. This was a poor performance, but she is not a bad performer. Her voice is great on that song.
Billy LOVES to see talented people like Olivia who own their artistry and aren't afraid to be true to themselves. He relates COMPLETELY to what she's dealt with as far as the critics and the public coming for her sometimes, because it happened to him too when he was younger. (He would clap back at critics and rip up their reviews onstage because he had confidence in his own artistry and *knew* he was better than whatever some crank hack from xyz magazine had to say.) Olivia is someone he really respects as an artist, Taylor is another, and Charlie Puth is another. He knows talent when he sees it, and Olivia has it, and she deserves to have the kind of longevity that Billy has. She has an amazing career ahead of her.
Something about hearing that grown adult man at the end of the video singing along to one of the most popular songs by Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo (he’s clearly not at this show for her, yet..) and continues to cheer her on for at least 20 seconds. 🤘🏼
damn this performance is actually really good . they took 30 seconds of the performance & made it look bad on Twitter . I should’ve never doubted her .
I must say I’m a tad surprised that Billy still sounds as good as he does. Granted I don’t think he has many hard songs to sing but I’m really wishing I could’ve gone to one of his shows
Billy has lowered the chord to many of his songs. He normally plays Uptown Girl in a lower chord but at this concert he played in the original chord to better accommodate Olivia's vocal range.
Let's not be too hard on Olivia's vocals. A) Deja Vu is her only synth-pop song and synth-pop is incredibly difficult to perform live. B) She's performing at Madison Square Garden alongside a musical legend.
I love Olivia Rodrigo, definitely my favorite singer! It brightened my day. knew this had happened but had never seen it, really exciting! She sang Uptown Girl with the utmost ease, as if she was already in the song in the original version. I'm really looking forward to GUTS which comes out September 8th
THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST OMG!!!! I’m such a HUGE fan of both of them!!! This collaboration was a dream come true for me, wish I was there to witness greatness!! Also the way Olivia just skips off the stage at 8:25 like a complete badass & with the upmost elegance is legendary. One of the many reasons why I love Olivia Rodrigo! :)
i went to this show with my fathers wich absolutely love billy joel and i love olivia, like shes my number 1 idol forever, and when i saw her there i literally screamed cuz i didn't had the opportunity to go to the sour tour. i was totally lucky that day
I've been a fan of Billy Joel since before he released this song, as well as an Olivia Rodrigo enthusiast for the last year or so, and thus couldn't resist clicking on this video!
I would have never pictured these two together but honestly it makes sense. They both seem humble and they both write personal, deep songs with lots of soul. Two great song writers
Billy Joel was the first concert I took my now wife to back in 1984 - Uptown Girl had just come out at that time. This really brings me back! Love Olivia Rodrigo - she knows her roots and respects them.
For 73 he looks really good. Also in August 2017 we saw him also at msg and he never failed to do a great performance. He never disappoints and of course the show was sold out.
I see some comments about Olivia singing off-key, not sounding that good, etc. While I am an admirer of Olivia, I think she does sound a bit ragged, especially in '"déjà vu." Let's keep in mind that this was not her show, where she would have been backed by her wonderful band - with whom she has such a great rapport. Olivia had to walk on and sing with musicians (all seasoned pros, btw) with whom she had not previously performed. Moreover, this was with *Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden.* I imagine she was very nervous and somewhat overwhelmed by what was happening. I can also imagine that Olivia herself was fuming afterward about her performance. She is very self-critical. Yes, someone like Lady Gaga would have probably nailed those two songs but Olivia has nevertheless gotten very sympathetic/good reviews. Also, we know from the Tiny Desk Concert that she can do a great job on "déjà vu." I do not think she needs to go to extraordinary lengths to improve her voice. Maybe some yoga/meditation would help. *The main point is: this was one more Milestone for Olivia Rodrigo* and it was a nice way to keep her in the post-Sour-Tour public eye while she works on her new songs. Twenty-one months ago she was only known for her role in HSMTMTS and Bizaardvark. Finally: I agree with a number of other comments here. She looked GREAT and she handled very well her interaction with Billy.
@@Mimi-hl3gu Good point but her final concert of the tour was on London on July 7. She sang with Billy Joel on August 24. She is a professional singer so I think she would have been well rested at that point, BUT . . . we have all seen the photos of Olivia in her cute Avrilish-plaid skirt walking out of the legendary Electric Ladyland studio a couple days ago. (This was the studio created by the immortal Jimi Hendrix - no doubt, a huge fave of Olivia and her buddy Guitarianna!). Maybe she has been laying down tracks since her return to the US and was a bit tired when she got to MSG. Maybe she got to MSG and was thinking she was not happy with some of those tracks. Basic Olivia-ish nervousness + the realization you are at MSG with Billy + having your mind on recording sessions (+ being a bit tired voicewise) = a potential recipe for not being at your best - unless you are Ms. Showbiz, The Lady Gaga. (And I am not even a big fan of her. She was hilarious in House of Gucci though!).
Yea she doesn't sound that good but I think this wasn't in any way her best performance. Plus she doesn't have all the techniques down (which is fine, she's a pop singer not classical) she must've been very nervous here haha in front of Billy Joel!
I mean if she was enjoying the whole rest of the concert i would imagine that she had been singing along to all of his other songs before her time to perform
I am a fan of both but I am tremendously amused to see that Olivia loves Uptown Girl about a hundred times more than she does Deja Vu. Her enthusiasm we visible and charming.
I swear I died, I was there and I was just rocking out to Billy! But when he said triple grammy winner I fainted in my spot. I'd do anything to go back and watch it all again edit: MOM IM FAMOUS
What? You haven't watched "Sour Prom"? It's like one long music video. The big exception is that the vocals were done live. It's very impressive. Most people aren't aware that the vocals were recorded live for "Sour Prom" though.
@@thinkhector I'll have to check that out. I rate her album a lot, but sadly most the live videos I've seen, her vocals are drowned out by screaming teens!
Probably would be too low for her in Eb. A lot of those notes are already low for her in E; below A3 is very difficult for her, in spite of some studio notes.
