Billy Mitchell and the Joystick of DOOM! 

Billy Mitchell was already questioned on camera if he ever would play on a cabinet with a non authentic joystick. He said no. He was asked what color an authentic stick has and he said black and stated again he would never played using a red stick. Then he was presented with the same image you had, just with a cut off stick and Mitchell confirmed the event and that the machine in the background is the one he used. This is such an open and shut case and billy is such a malicious litigant that your self-congratulatory phony nuance is unbearable to listen to

I can see how you could like Billy Mitchell, he's a charming guy and he sure is very good at what he does but if you get on his bad side he presents himself as somebody very devious, manipulative and very hostile. The internet hates him because of his own doings, especially because of how he ran things from the shadows in Twin Galaxies with a crew of dishonest people who sided with him.

Mitchell has been caught lying about this case so many times now its comical. He doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt at this point. If he is as good as he claims he should have known it was an emulator based on the audio alone.

You are so against emulation, but I've seen it in your arcade. I'm 99% sure your Time Traveler is not running a real laserdisc for example. The scenes load too fast.

@freeplayarcade The 8 way joystick isn't supposed to be used, because it allows you to push diagonally and steer barrels while simultaneously moving either up or down the ladder - On an original arcade machine with a 4 way joystick, you'd have to stop moving on the ladder and move the joystick either left or right. This constitutes a legitimate advantage - especially when trying to escape being clobbered by the barrels.

The thing is Billy is on video, in a trial, saying he would never touch a joystick with such color and explaining why it wouldn't count for a record. And he had never acknowledge all the issues with his records, he never said, oh, i was duped, my bad. There is no room for imagining innocence in a man that sue people to silence them for speaking the truth.

It must be a wonderful feeling to own a signed photo by Billy Mitchell. Think about it, he is "The Gamer of the Century". that's huge, I mean... wow!

Is there any indication he actually played on that machine or just took a photo in front of it?

I met Billy Mitchell at a retro event and he was really great to interact with. But I think we have to look at the hard facts and think of the bigger picture when it comes to the retro video game community.

OK, I’ll be the one to pose this possibility, which, knowing games like I do (I used to make them when I was a kid, and will do so again, soon. When I made them, I had to map out joystick inputs, and I know that software, especially on older hardware, cannot adapt to new inputs unless it was programmed to. With limits in storage and RAM, these would not have been programmed in), I think that this is the case. I don’t think that Donkey Kong knows what to do with diagonal inputs from an 8 way joystick. As a result, using an 8 way would create dead spots in the diagonals which would hang up the movement of Jump Man (Mario). Pac Man has the same issue, too, from what I understand (play these games with a D-Pad on emulator, which has 8 directions, and see for yourself. How about the port of the arcade game on the Switch, which is the only version of the actual arcade game on a console? It may not be as noticeable on the original Switch, the Redbox Switch, or the Switch OLED, as those use buttons as a “d-pad”, and diagonals are more intentional using those buttons, but try it on a Switch Lite, which uses a D-Pad. It’s not easy). These games are extremely limited in their hardware and were specifically designed for 4 way play. Diagonals are processed as one input + another, so it would be an input value that the game is not looking for, and which would be ignored. You cannot physically combine joystick inputs in a 4 way, so the game doesn’t look for it. When going diagonal in these games, you may as well let go of the stick. As a result, playing with an 8 way stick would be have loose, sloppy game play and would not help the player at all. It would make the game more difficult, in fact. Now, the translation of Donkey Kong for the Famicom/ NES is NOT the arcade game, but rather a translation to designed to be played on a horizontal screen on a console using an 8 way D-Pad, so the game knows about diagonal inputs and the game play is adjusted to factor that in. Those translations, since they don’t have arcade code, don’t have the glitches, patterns, and barrel steering B.S. of the coin-op, so a D-Pad would have no advantage in the game play (I actually prefer the NES version of Donkey Kong. It is easier than the arcade game and more fun. It actually requires skill, too). That said, adding an 8 way to a Donkey Kong arcade machine (why do people keep calling coin-ops “arcades”? An arcade is the place where coin op machines are; it’s a place, not a thing) IS, technically, modifying the hardware, so it is grounds for disqualifications under the rules for achieving a high score. It just would be a bad idea to use one, for that reason, and for the control issues that it would cause. I absolutely would avoid a Donkey Kong machine with an 8 way stick. I am not an exceptional player of video games and I don’t put much weight into high scores, due to variables such as variation in hardware and software which would put doubt into the validity of the scores to begin with (I like high scores, and I like making them. I just don’t take it seriously), as well as glitches and patterns which undermine the requirement of skill (also, things such as steering barrels in Donkey Kong is lame, as is jumping barrels that you aren’t actually jumping over or jumping next to Donkey Kong to get extra points. It should not be allowed in scoring, although there isn’t anything that can be really done about it unless it is looked for, and, even then, the player could argue that they had to move a certain way to legitimately play the game, and that the results were unavoidable at the time. Just play the game and use skill). I like to play video games. I don’t care about being the best, or whatever, I love video games and I enjoy playing them. Attaching so much value to something that is questionable at best, such as high scores, is just sad. IMO, this whole high score thing on leaderboards cannot be taken seriously. If I were a TG referee, I would have realized how pointless and futile that verifying high scores would have been, and simply quit and spent my time playing games. Want the scores to count? Tear apart the machine and get it technically certified, seal it up, and get all of the players in the same room to play the machine to get their scores. That is the best way to validate the scores. Want to see who is the best gamer? Play a game such as Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike head to head with another player next to you and use skill and the game’s parry system. That’s another way to determine who is the better player. Those arcade games are technically more comprehensive and stable, and can’t be exploited like older games can be. These guys have issues if they take high scores that seriously. In the end, though, if you do put such importance in high scores, do it FOR you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. If you achieve something in a game, you know it, and that is all that matters. Note it, smile knowing that you accomplished something, and keep playing games. Have fun. If they actually care about video games and they are not using them as something to attach their self esteem to and use it to validate their life, video game “superstars” need to put their inflated egos aside and work together as ambassadors of classic video games. I don’t play these games for nostalgia. I play these games because they are good games. Sadly, most people now won’t even give them a chance. Good games remain good games. Also, games are about game play, and not graphics. I, personally, love 8 and 16 bit graphics and pixel art. These guys need to get others to try these games so that they can also love them. Get people to play these games! We all need to work together to preserve these games.

If you were a top level player, there's no way you would not recognize between emulation and original game. And it's not really a defense to say that a player will play whatever you give them, sure, but at that point you wouldn't say that this is a new record and smile and take pictures. You would just say GG and move on.

So maybe someone who knows more about the retro arcade scene can clarify. From what i have seen billy played on emulation software, i think thats a certainty at this point. My question is what advantages does playing on emulation hardware/software provide to the player over Original?

Now other rules may ban any repair like power supply changes, cap repairs, battery mods, nvram, ect/

I think you're missing the point in saying that people are saying that Billy Mitchell is done because of this phot. Sure, some people might think that. But the REAL issue is that this really screws the legal case Billy has against Karl Jobst. THAT'S the real issue because it demonstrates he's a liar as he has sworn otherwise in an affadavit. They caught him out and Karl's legal team played a blinder doing so.

TG back then was a clic of men that collaborated with him. To fluff the TG name and sponsorship. Basicly for money mostly . They needed to do this to over sell the name. And billy / walter profited mostly. So they did this whole thing to dupe people and then profit in many ways., I think Billys world of woes is just beginning . He will get counter sued by Karl and people are MORE than willing to help.

The language you are using is telling . Dismissing his vindictiveness and lies as a act . Then trying to make those who are exposing him sound unhinged. He lied then fabricated evidence.( 2 fake awards )and denied Someone who legitimately should have been recognized. The joy stick matters because it was the rules even back then . Everybody else followed the rules but billy didn’t . The facts are he could have turned in his score with mame running but chose not to . He has never got the high score in front of a crowd from begging to end . You guys are trying so hard to defend him has lied over and over.

14:09 - the problem with this discussion is it's possible he never even played on that machine. That's how he forgot about the joystick. It's possible he never even looked at it and noticed it. He brought a pre-recorded VHS with him. That's why the person running the event said that he "got the score" before anyone arrived. Billy made sure to fake the score before anyone actually did show up to notice he didn't actually play. Billy wasn't even technically at the event long enough to get a record. That's how bad it was. What's insane is that they have a camera in the photo. They didn't use a camera. It's direct feed. There's not a single frame of footage from that camera. The same thing happened at Boomers. They had a camera they used for the fake board swap video, but not a single frame of him actually playing. The reason Billy thinks he can walk into a courtroom and lie is because people have been believing his lies forever. he has so many lackeys and hangers-on that are pathetic people with no lives. They worship him, so they believe every word he says. He doesn't understand that this behavior only works with complete losers. The judge isn't a loser. The judge will see through his lies. When he shows the judge his DK board he sent to Nintendo he might get laughed out of the courtroom. This is a clear creation of fake evidence, which a judge will see instantly. Billy thinks this somehow validates him, but the judge will immediately know Billy KNEW he was going to be called a cheater (because he cheated) so he sent a board to Nintendo as a crutch for the day he got caught. Most of Billy's defense is going to backfire on him, and it will be glorious when it happens.

From being one of the technicians that is helping twin Galaxy's as a third party non biased, it is physically impossible that the footage from Billy's scores did not come from a original Donkey Kong board because the way he recorded is physically impossible due to refresh rate with dk and a vcr tape. The picture quality is completely different and is not anywhere near the same. Another issue is the screen is oriented the wrong way and there is a border around the screen Which was caused from early mame.

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but, if you're playing in a real arcade machine or any other way that replicates that experience (mister FPGA for example), it shouldn't care what controller are you using if you do the world record. It's like fighting gaming e-sports. Each player has his own controller with itsown characteristics. Some people uses console controllers, others use an arcade stick, etc. The point is the skill that you need to get that score. If this thing doesn't evolve, in the future it will be impossible to continue beating records, since original arcade cabinets won't last forever.
