EUROPEAN Queen is best! Ha, I would say that, wouldn’t I ?! Actually, that was the FIRST release of the giant hit which I first heard on a TV programme in Germany in the 1980s. Before the Word Police discovered it and had it changed to suit certain people. In my personal case ut was the Euro version my sweet Malay boyfriend on the island of Penang, Malaysia loved. 💕💕
Just learned something for the first time in my life at 57. I always thought the original was Caribbean Queen. Never knew it was European Queen. Either version sounds great! What a great classic jam of the 80's and still is by Brother B. Who pumps this jam now and then in 2021? Let me know if people still love this song.
We had the vinyl at home in the 80's and I remember singing African Queen as a toddler. Nostalgia had me googling and I bumped into Caribbean Queen and I thought all my childhood was a dream. Also a European Queen. Probably undercover activism, but Billy Ocean's brand was clean and he tried to cater for all. I'm from South Africa and a British singing African Queen meant a lot. I grew up humming these lyrics in my head..
My parents were stationed in Germany during the early 80s and would attest to that. Plus that was also wear we heard Loose Ends first album "A little spice". There were two versions of that album
I remember it being no secret at the time that the song was originaly European Queen, but I had no idea Billy recorded this version. Flawless vocals as usual.
I don't know how I'd feel if I heard this first, but I feel like Caribbean Queen is objectively better. The song seems better in a warm setting. I also feel like Billy punched up the vocals a little bit for CQ. It could be all in my head, but I feel like he is holding back and this man should never hold back that voice of his.
First time hearing this version. Acustommed hearing "Caribbean Queen". Was a boy at that time, but your video on America's Top 10, on TTT Saturday mornings.
Always LOVED "Carribean Queen", Billy! Played so many times on radio and the 12" at parties back in the day, I lost count! (BTW, it was ALWAYS a killer on the dance floor!!)
European queen was originally released to minimal success and billy and his managers decided that Europe gave to many thought of rain and cold weather so wasn’t appealing, so the changed European to Caribbean and it became a huge success.
@@Strangereg that's not true. They released 3 different versions in different countries . Every version was released in 1984. Only in UK they released Caribbean Queen and European Queen.
@@herbertdepp2163Nope. European Queen was released first, in May 1984. They later re-recorded it as Caribbean Queen (as well as a few others, including African Queen) and released them around the world later in the year.
Basically Billy Ocean released European Queen and it was a massive flop. People didn't associate Europe with fun and excitement. On the other hand the Carribean is a famous destination for vacation and makes people think of good times. Therefore, he re-released the song, made it shorter and promptly named it Carribean Queen
Billy Ocean...how about "American Queen"(for the North and South American continents) followed by "Australian Queen"( Australia and Polynesia) next is "Asian Queen"(Asia) well Antarctica has no permanent residents! This is arguably the only truly global pop song. Anybody dare agree????
