As soon as Billy said he was a fan of PSS. The opening bass of the live version of Smokestack Lightening came into my head and it totally made sense

A band I was in yrs back opened for Mr. Big. We, Billy and I, hung out at the end of the night. He's one of the nicest, down to Earth guys you will ever meet in the biz. You would be surprised how many appear to be nice who are actually the worlds biggest pricks.

Wait...... that complicated bass line is actually Paul Samwell Smith in the 60s?! That guy was ahead of his time.

Nice to see this. Joe Walsh also covered 'Lost Woman' with the James Gang. Worth noting that the Gibson bass Samwell-Smith played belonged to the band. When Jimmy Page joined, that was the bass he played. He was soon deemed a 'horrible' bassist ('too many notes' according to rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja) and moved to rhythm/2nd lead guitar, with Dreja taking over on the Gibson. (The band owned that bass and a red Telecaster played by Eric Clapton. When Jeff Beck joined the Yardbirds he didn't own a guitar (!), so he used that red Tele, though thought it was 'rubbish' and moved on to other guitars.) Page got the job when Samwell-Smith quit after a gig where singer Keith Relf had too much to drink and was insulting the audience. He had twice been offered the guitar spot with the band before recommending his friend Jeff Beck. One of the more rollicking Yardbirds' bass lines, that on 'Over, Under, Sideways, Down' is actually Beck. What is often overlooked when discussing the Yardbirds is that Samwell-Smith was the musical director/producer. Though managers Giorgio Gomelsky and Simon Napier-Bell gave themselves credit, it was Samwell-Smith doing the work. As Jeff Beck noted, his departure was a serious blow. Samwell-Smith went on to be a successful record producer, with this rare interview offering insight into his own perspective on his musicianship as well as working with the likes of Cat Stevens. dmme.net/interviews/interview-with-paul-samwell-smith

On a purely technical level, only Jack Bruce and John Entwistle could rival Paul Samwell-Smith among British bass players in the '60s. His picking technique was way ahead of his time.
