Billy Wilder says that while it's not necessary for a Director to know how to write, it is necessary for him to know how to "read". This clip is part of a Harold Lloyd Master Seminar shot in 1976.

Such a genius. An immigrant from Hungary who comes over as a young adult and doesn't know English becomes a master at English and writes some of the best, most remembered screenplays in American movies.

He was and remains a genius. His analysis and advice is always blunt and direct, no BS.

The Wings of Eagles is a biopic of Spig Wead, who among other things wrote screeplays. He is hired by a director, modeled on John Ford, who directed TWOE. Wead asks how does he know I can write and a person ,answers him 'well he knows he can't'. John Wayne said that when Ford got a script, he kept crossing out line after line till he pared it down to what was absolutely necessary.
