The enigmatic rapper, billy woods, returns with his 10th studio album. He has been making a name for himself in the underground hip hop scene since the early 2000s but has garnished an increasingly large following since 2012's History Will Absolve Me. This time around he's teaming up with one of the most interesting producers in the game...DJ Preservation. But how did it work out for him? Was this the ideal backdrop for woods's style? Or was it a bit too much of a mishmash? Listen to the fellas discuss it and then leave your thoughts in the comment section!

The generational wealth bar by Billy Woods is one of the hardest bars in Hip Hop history. "In person, these rappers watches look temptin'. The chain say envy, but PTSD keep me countin', never spendin'. My accountant is a head full of bad memories and sad endings. It's all payment pending. I'm not concerned with generational wealth, that's its own curse. Anything you want on this cursed Earth Probably better off gettin' it yourself, see what it's worth."

@@vkjfv Yeah I'm not from Africa but I'm really good at reading and after a second listen I feel like I understand what Billy is saying, then I start using google because I know there is deep knowledge in Billys work to be deciphered. Like the painting he used for the cover was bought and occulted by the guy who started the Brazil slave trade, and is still in his gallery which is a shame because it is probably one of the more humanizing European depictions of Africans as men and not some exotic Race. I really liked his production on this sounded very Afrocentric.

I think it just, the amount of people that get put on, like the mainstream will always put Jay big Nas and pac. That's just like a given, they are mainstream. @@ninjasrose1653 yup, that just it. I find it funny when people say they don't listen to lyrics. Like how? What are you listening to then? I do miss when we used to go search for albums, I love vinyl and all the extra shit you get when you buy the physical copies. I personally usually don't have to look up lyrics, I can hear it but sometimes it helps to read as you listen, to help better understand. I love Nas and big, especially Nas last 2 albums, I sense that hunger again. I just think there are so many different cats out there experimenting with different styles, flow and cadences, you just gotta find them. KA for instance has been around for a long time, I'm sure Nas knows what's up skill wise, but KA ain't ever gonna be on the radio, and that's just fine because his music is still getting appreciated.
@ninjasrose1653
@ninjasrose1653 2 года назад
@@poopymcpoop9945 Exactly! I never understood that myself. Especially with Hip Hop. Having physical copies is always that much more special. I listen to certain albums in different ways. Like with Ka & billy woods, I listen to it 2 times then the thirs time I read lyrics along with it. Then I go back to listen to it and it gives me a different perspective as I usually catch things I missed. KA has been around for decades, just not always active. He was originally part of a group called Natural Elements. Then removed himself as he felt he wasn't good enough! Nas definitely knows what's up. The last two projects have been VERY good!
@poopymcpoop9945
@poopymcpoop9945 2 года назад
@@ninjasrose1653 exactly, I always do multiple listens, that's the thing with a great album not only does it require multi listens but you end up wanting to because they are that good. I like your system, I think I'm gonna start doing something like that. I'm always to proud to read lyrics but I have found that it helps and creates a better experience. See that's what a good artist does, he gives you an experience. Look I listen to it all so I don't wanna poop (pun intended) on artist who aren't necessarily conscious. Like future or young thug or something like that because they also bring stuff to the table. I just really enjoy albums like billies or KA or Nasor the Aesops for longevity. On Generational Wealth, you have to remember that Billy Woods was raised with socialsim and Marxism and he lives within an arch-Capitalist society. It's great to see that y'all were challenged by the line because that's what Woods does. He's offering an appreciation and a critiquing of socialist theory on this album and with his other work too, whilst speaking to primarily a Capitalism audience. When Jay-Z is the embodiement of rampant capitalism and when even someone thought of as left-minded like Killer Mike speaks of endorsing so called "compassionate capitalism", for Billy Woods to come out and break down capitalist dogma as he does feels truley subversive and revolutionary. I'm not saying that Woods is definitely a left wing radical (he has criticisms of Marx in his work) but he has a political and social outlook that is critical of existing economic systems in a way that is more serious than the standard cliches. Woods is a gem.

After listening to this album numerous times I came to this conclusion. Preservation shines just as bright as Woods on this album. I can't explain it but these beats might be the best beats I've heard in the past year. Like someone else mentioned the backdrop is so alluring.
