@@charleshandshaw85 Mississippi has a long history of people not liking people bcuz of the color of there skin and or there religion. And most of them don't wanna change that And there not going too!..dis is part of the problem that sets Mississippi back from progressing forward and that is one of reason's the State is hardly ever recognized on Anything!. When there's people like that, U get No love from outsiders.

Agreed. Very good narration about the architecture, some cool history, and of course the beach. INCREDIBLY clean in the downtown area, which surprised me a little. Nonetheless, great job on your part, and regarding your (and most guys') fascination with big trucks, your wife (and most wives) simply don't get it lol. Heck, as soon as I saw the truck, my imagination was thinking about how cool it would look to do a DIY RV build on that rig, so it's DEFINITELY a guy thing ;)

@@charleshandshaw85 Sometimes it's good for a place to "[get] no love." It preserves your place and keeps every Tom, D and Harry from New Yawk and California from moving in. Places like North Carolina have gotten a lot of love and now they are being inundated by out of state urban transplants. It's a shame.

I think this coastal area of Biloxi is one of the best kept secrets for living and retiring. Small towns stretch for miles all along the Mississippi Sound. Friendly people, low crime, very affordable (Especially for living on the water!). There is a boardwalk/sidewalk that stretches for prob 20 miles at least, and you have a water view the entire way. You can ride your bike or walk on it in complete safety and enjoy everything from fresh fish, shrimp and crab, (right off the boats) to snowcone stands. It’s really quite amazing when you factor all those things in together. Forget what you think you know or stereotypes from the past. The attitude in this modern Biloxi area is nothing like. People are friendly, the weather is warm and the food is good!!

This video makes me homesick. I lived in south Mississippi for 27 years before moving to the West coast. So beautiful and the people are so friendly there. People in the west coast aren't very friendly in comparison. And the food! I don't believe there are any bad restaurants in South MS. The economy in the 'Sip is hard to overcome though. I had to get out. I go back to visit every year. Thanks for a positive video of the beautiful gulf coast. People often tend to dwell on the negative when taking about MS, and they miss all the beauty and culture and resilience of the area.

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip yes, when you look at historical photos of Beauvoir, you see that the coastline went right up to the property line. Gulf National Seashore is part of the national park system so it's protected, undeveloped, as the rest of our coastline once was.

Other videographers such as, Watching The Watchmen, want to travel to places and record outside establishments without ever having a purpose except to get confrontational footage by making the residents and business owners feel uncomfortable in their own daily life. You have presented a fair and honest view of the Gulf Coast here in Mississippi and all of the other places in this wonderful country that we all share. Almost to the letter they exclaimed, "And you came to MISSISSIPPI of all places?!" I'm sure it's a big joke there. Nice state. Lovely people.

We got to go down on the beach area where streets & streets of houses were demolished from the storm surges.... Only residents were allowed but we had an AF badge. There were people sitting on steps that once belonged to their home & crying.... It was so very sad. We also went into the poor part of town near the base and did volunteer work as well. My husband has since passed away..... Watching this is So Mind Blowing!!!!

I was stationed at Keesler AFB back in the early 80's and remember all the beautiful homes and businesses that had been rebuilt after Hurricane Camille virtually wiped out the Biloxi coastal area. One of my civilian Air Force instructors who lived there when Camille struck in 1968 said much of the air base had been destroyed by Camille. And years later, Katrina did a number on Biloxi as well. I used to live in Gulfport, it is quiet because people are in CHURCH, that's a big thing there. You should of seen it prior to Katrina. The large empty space from the homes to the beach is thanks to Katrina... it washed them all away. The stilts are after Katrina as city ordinance required it... most 1 story homes were under water.
@tarabelles2130
@tarabelles2130 Год назад
So let me add to this: in order for the homeowners to build back, FEMA required them to build at least 1 ft above base flood elevation or else they could not build. FEMA also put the Katrina Rule in place, same thing about elevating home, and if not, total renovations (over a 10 year period) could not exceed 50% of the home value. The houses that are not elevated, had to be remodeled before those regs were put in place otherwise they wouldn't have been able to get permits to build/remodel. It's a huge problem and prevented many from rebuilding bc they could not afford the elevate AND rebuild. We also have areas becoming blighted bc homeowners cannot fix their homes, cannot elevate their homes, homes fall into disrepair, get condemned, then surrounding property values fall. It also leads to greater housing insecurity. It's an issue in Lake Charles with Hurricane Laura, SE Louisiana with Hurricane Ida, and it could be a big problem in FL after Hurricane Ian. FEMA or Congress will need to do something about this 50% rule &/or the elevation requirement.

@@Michael-ep7lx actually that's not correct...at least not now. I cannot attest to the original sand when the beach was 1st built but THAT sand would be WAY down there or blown to Canada by now. That sand there now is our own. It has been dredged up from the bottom and pumped onto the beach multiple times when beach replenishment has taken place. I grew up here & watched it happen multiple times, even again in the last decade. You will see it's the same sugar soft sand found in Gulf Shires, Orange Beach, Destin, 30A. It's Gulf of Mexico sand & bleached white by our sun.

@@Michael-ep7lx lol! First, I'm well aware of North America's geography, directions on a compass rose, and just how far Canada is from the MS Gulf Coast. I was being facetious. Goodness me! Was that too much?? Now, you may want to debate with me over whether or not these beaches were pumped up from the bottom of the MS Sound or not, but it is true. The job does get subcontracted out so not sure how you research it exactly. I do know who did it last as a friend of mine was dating the guy who owned that company. By the way, we don't have mangroves here. That's in South Florida. Familiarize yourself with the type of marshland vegetation you will find- mainly marshgrass, water oaks, pines, scrub brush. All the same that's out at Davis Bayou & Gulf National Seashore in Ocean Springs. That area is preserved & undeveloped. It would also be like Keegan's Bayou, which my grandparents lived on & I grew up around there. I'm pretty familiar with my environment and my hometown. Biloxi is a beautiful town, and the way they came back from hurricanes, resilient and miraculous. I lived and grew up tween Ocean Springs- Slidell-BSL-Picayune areas. Hung out and experienced everywhere from Mobile to Baton Rouge. A great place to be.

Answers: The Biloxi pier you were talking about gets destroyed about every 10 years with each hurricane (even cat 2s). The city keeps rebuilding it but they may have finally given up. The deuce and a half army truck you saw belongs to the man who rents out jet skis by the beach chairs you were on (he also owns the beach chairs). He drives that truck, with a trailer attached, out into the water and loads up his jet skis at the end of each day. Thanks for coming by and making a great video!

At 1:37, you're showing the clock and you say "Somebody is working on this building." The upstairs is accessible from a door down the street, next to the truck on the right, parked along the curb. Upstairs is an absolutely AMAZING throwback to older office design with beautiful hardwood and glass EVERYWHERE. The kind of craftsmanship and attention to detail that you do not find in the 21st century. Directly above that door/clock is a huge open area that offers a wonderful view of the street. I could sit up there, drink coffee and people watch all day. A very well concealed gem that you wouldn't find if you weren't aware of it.

I LIVE HERE!!!! This and Mobile are always going to be where I call home! And I'm sure you know, Mobile, which I know you had to have seen, is the home of the first US Mardi Gras! If you want drunk crowds, New Orleans is fine, I guess. But Mobile is where you can feel the experience and community more! Also, Biloxi has the first queer bar in the state, as well as the oldest, and they did so much to provide shelter for everyone in the community after all the storms. I'm sure you've seen a boat a bit far from the shore; even now you can still see the aftermath of all the big storms. We're definitely resilient down here, and we have the best seafood! Get you some mudbugs and oysters!

The old Barq's root beer place has been through many a hurricane since Barq's root beer was invented. If it has lasted this long, then it is because things were constructed back then to last. They didn't have the necessities that modern construction companies have today, but the people whom built that building would be proud that it's still standing despite the beating it has received over the years. For many, constructing something to last was a symbol of pride in their craftmanship.

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip the damage you saw to the original old Barq building is from Hurricane Katrina. It, too, was underwater. The Gulf met the bay over most of the Biloxi peninsula, including that area. Water varied 5-20+ ft deep, depending on where you were and the elevation. I got stories. I used to work in that building that's being renovated on Howard Ave now. Barqs are my neighbors now. Great people!
