I replaced mine today. I used a Harbor Freight ball joint separator and it popped it out after about 2 turns of the bolt. Flew down on ground. Item 99849. $20. Pickle fork got caught between cross-member and sway bar. Easy peasy after I used my thinker. We will see how the new Bilstein damper works. Old one was toast, it wasn’t doing anything. No rebounding.
I steering dampener isn’t a shock absorber is a dampener. So there isn’t any positive outer force like a shock. The Bilstein stabilizer can actually cause your truck to pull a little to one side if you have some slight warn out steering components. This is due to positive pressure constantly pushing on the steering components. How to tell if your stock stabilizer is bad is it want have any resistance when pushing it in or pulling it out. It will just go in and out with ease. But the stock one should not push against you like the Bilstein does.
You never showed the part where and how you finally got the old stabilizer off. I just messed with one on a 1994 for 3 hours and gave up. I could just not get that tapered end out.
Just finished doing my shocks . Like them. Currently stuck on stabilizer as well. It’s seized up. What was your best method to get it out. I’ve tried pb blaster ,hammering a fork in between . Still stuck. Hopefully can get it off tomorow easier.
I’m doing mine rn as well, truck is an 03 and it’s the factory stabilizer. I hit it with the air hammer and it’s still stuck, going to buy the pickle fork attachment for the air hammer as it seems that works
Josh C I had mine from old job on friends CRV. I was laying on ground thinking what can I use. I was concerned it wouldn’t fit in area and I wouldn’t be able to get wrench on it but it worked great. I didn’t have crank on it really. 2 fairly easy turns. Scared me because I wasn’t ready for it to pop. I thought I had several more turns. I did make sure my face and head was protected by the cross member. Found the old washer back by the passenger rear tire. Didn’t hear it just came across it a few minutes later.
Surprised the stabilizer rebounds like a shock...it should just stay wherever it is in order to dampen forces from either direction. I bought a new stabilizer(not bilstein) and it does not rebound it just stays wherever you extend/compress it to
ah ok. well mines been in the truck for 55 years new one didnt come with bolts.... i doubt if i can get the old bolts through the rubber... going to have to find some matching bolts. its also stuck as well high sierra k15
About three days ago I purchased the same set up but I had to purchase a I believe it’s a kryptonite bracket I live in Colorado and they deliver it to South Carolina to somebody’s house.
Stabilizers shouldn’t push back out. They aren’t a normal shock compression/rebound wise. Also that isn’t seized, it’s normal and designed that way. It has a tapered stud like a ball joint. Just need the proper tool to get it apart and it’s a piece of cake. Next time get the right tools and some gloves. No need to get all greasy and dirty. Looking like someone that doesn’t know what they are doing.
Fake it till ya make it lol! It’s been awhile since this video was made, but I do remember thinking it was odd it pushed back out, almost in a way that would affect the steering of the truck IMO. I just assumed that was correct since the new one pushed out.
