A video comparing an Inverted Monotube Bilstein B8 Shock Absorber/ Damper to a Twin Tube unit. Discussion of piston size, weight, cavitation and fade resistance. Buy Bilstein online here balancemotorsport.co.uk/bilst.... Some comments criticising the fact it's an FSD Damper and not the Sport - it doesn't change the content the video is fundementally about Twin Tube vs Monotube. FSD is now replaced with Special Active.

which shock absorber do you recommend for toyota hilux 2011 mk7, I seek comfort, better handling, stability?

Are the FSD better? I recently purchased them for my 2010 Mini Cooper S to replace the OEM struts.

FSD is frequently selective damping - it seeks to provide a blend of "sportiness" and comfort. Certainly far superior to a typical OEM dampers. Of course if you had a clio sport with cup suspension that is £3500 of shocks as standard so depends on the car. E.g 911s often have monotube bilsteins as standard. There the difference is people may choose FSD for a softer ride.

Two complete different shocks build for different purposes and acting on the road completely different. You have to compare B8 with Koni Sport. FSD is the league on it's own ( maybe we can add Monroe Reflex here)

thanks for the comment - from perspective of comparing monotube vs twintube the Koni sport is the same as the FSD. Both being Twin Tube with very low gas pressure. Although the Koni Sport allows rebound adjustment - so it's very good if you want to run much stiffer springs and dial the shock in.

This is exactly what I thought. It's like comparing a minivan to a saloon. Different things. The only thing they have in common is that they are both cars. The Koni FSD is designed to give you the best of both worlds. Sports performance without sacrificing comfort. It's made to be an alternative of sorts to complicated computer controlled active suspensions. If what you want is just a stiff ride then the FSD is not for you. But who wants that with a road car? With a sports car the FSD is better. For a track car maybe not. But it's for designed for that. Horses for courses. Wish the video would be more specific. People who don't know watch the video and may think the B8 is better than the FSD. But it's not. Depends on what you need. For a sports car, which is a road car, I would much rather have the FSD set up.

@@cb3948 thanks for your reply. The video is comparing twin tube with monotube. You FSD has " frequency selective damping" all dampers are frequency selective in their damping by their very nature. There is nothing with the FSD you couldn't replicate with the correct monotube piston and shim stack. So the comparison between twin tube and monotube is what's relevant here. The FSD principle does work well on roads like we have in the UK. They've now been replaced with Koni Special Active. The same comparison would stand with those. For hard driving on British roads a digressive monotube offers comfort and superior damping to a twin tube.

@@balancemotorsport8664 Bilstiens tend to have linear instead of digressive compression damping though.

@@balancemotorsport8664 also dampers are not frequency selective in nature, they're velocity selective per se. Go to 2:10 in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1yndvklrbSg.html

thanks. For a smooth ride the FSD system works well. For higher speed Sports driving the larger digressive piston and high gas pressure of the Bilstein provides not only great control but also excellent ride. However the low speed ride of the Bilstein is not as good.

What do you suggest for a mk7 gti lowered on whiteline lowering springs (30mm front and 35mm in rear) which will be used as a daily driver with spirited driving on occasion?

Bilstein B8 or if you prefer a smoother ride on our roads the Koni Special Active does ride nicely (this is the latest version of the FSD product) by all means call or email sorry only just seen this message !
