BIM roles and career pathways - how to 'get into BIM'

Kicking off 2023 with a commonly asked question and my take on it, and then some - 'how do I get into BIM'? Whilst the question itself is fundamentally flawed, I break it down and we run through career pathways that are still viable and relate to BIM.

Thank you for this honest video, completely agree about the uncertainty of the BIM role. It starts to show more and more that when it comes down to it, BIM roles are something firms like to have, and not necessarily need to have.

Yes important to remember that AEC firms do not draw direct financially charged service from BIM, so its important to regularly make firm leadership aware of the benefits it can provide the core business practice with.

Thank you for making this video I have 3/4 years in practice in the UK as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant (whilst studying my Masters Degree) pretty much doing the job of a BIM Technician and have been considering other roles that may have been available to me so this has made things very clear as to what to expect from a BIM role. Similar to yourself my passion in the industry lies with BIM/ Technology and have been striving towards specialising in that. P.s you also helped me learn Dynamo and I now write my own scripts without guidance or input and I am consistently improving/automating work flows whilst on live projects. So thank you for being such a good teacher!!

Glad the video has proven helpful and in context to your current decision making process. It's quite a common position to be in as BIM has become an integral part of the delivery skillset which most part 1 workers are dealing with in UK market. Whether you pursue it beyond the point of supporting your role vs being your role is a challenging decision. Nice one RE becoming an autonomous programmer! Keep it up :D

I was wondering if you'd touch on how one can keep up with learning about BIM while learning about their primary domain, and also the challenge of BIM being 'Non-Billable' and how you can do that in a way that doesn't get you fired

To be honest it's very difficult to without putting in time outside the office work time; especially if the firm is not supportive of BIM roles and RnD time allowance. Personally I estimate I put anywhere up to 15 hours of development time per week into myself to keep up to speed in addition to my contact hours at work.

Yes its not as common in my experience. Many firms either moved on to Revizto if they wanted a better product, Solibri if they use more openBIM formats or approaches and BIM360 design if they want to avoid paying for Navisworks altogether.

I have a quick question that, will a master's degree in construction management after B.arch be beneficial to start a career in the BIM industry, especially in a developing country like India? It will really depend on market conditions and how competitive the jobs are at that time. Companies would usually take Masters over Bachelors if it's a tight market for graduates. The best way to find out is to look at the job postings and see what qualifications they usually ask for.

Hi Gavin, first video I’ve watched of yours and I very much appreciate the insight. I have an associates degree in drafting technologies and have been working at a construction company as a drafter for 4 yrs since. What would be your suggestion for me to work my way into a bim role? From Idaho, US

I'd suggest trying to get involved with the standards around how modelling/drafting is undertaken, and also look into project coordination opportunities. Both are good inroads to BIM roles and going beyond project specific work.

I'm a bit confused on the Australian occupation bodies, doses a bim manager falls under the body of Engineering or draftparson ?

Technically it would generally fall to draftsperson if dealing with classes of role for VISA purposes, but it doesn't really have a natural group it lends itself to ultimately.

Hi Gavin, this is Gajan here, hope your well, in order to reduce the chance of being redundant as a BIM specialist, would it make sense to keep upskilling on different tools like programming or coding tools at all costs? I’m currently doing your course you offer at your business Aussie BIM guru in order for me to upskill on Dynamo and I’m slowly but surely going through the course but taking on board some of the tips doing stuff on Dynamo. While at times there’s bit of pressure to test my knowledge through quizzes and a lot of info to digest for different chapters, I’m doing all I can to not rush through and do it at a leisurely pace by doing one chapter at a time. Hope things are well on your end, hope we can catch up when we have the chance.

Hey Gajan, hope things are going well at BLP! My main tip is to focus on how your role brings the business value vs personal skills in the longer term. Research new and upcoming platforms and features to get the firm on the front foot, and focus on developing solutions that scale beyond single projects or even users. In the long term I think DFMA and testfit/autodraw type platforms (hypar, swapp, testfit and possibly forma) will change the delivery and design process significantly, and many BIM specialists will be exposed for being too documentation focused in their abilities and skillset. Look beyond delivery phase and BIM, and look at how designs are prepared and explored to extend beyond this area. I recommend eventually aiming towards general Python so as to have a core programming language that will also help understand how the nextgen tech is working - it will be more programmer centric I think. Hope that helps!

Hey Gavin, I am a MEP Modeler with one year of experience working for a BIM consultancy. I have a bachelor's in mechanical engg. Is it possible for a person with a non civil/architecture qualification to become a BIM manager? Also, does a master's in BIM management or Construction Management help a MEP Modeler to improve the chance of becoming a BIM manager? Thank you

MEP firms generally have BIM coordinators and managers also if they are medium to large scale, so certainly no reason why the pathway isn't an option depending on where you work.

What do you do in a documentation role?

These days documentation/drafter roles are not actually very common. Typically we might call this role a designer or technician. They would generally be involved in modelling, preparing drawing sets and coordinating the project with a team.

@AussieBIMGuru okay basically what I do right note in civil 3d as a cad tech but with in a Bim role.
