Binging with Babish: The Cake from Portal 

Just wanted to let you guys know I'm hearing y'all loud and clear - very sorry I omitted the original recipe from the game! I was short on time when I shot this last week, and figured it was so full of crazy/toxic ingredients, I should just skip it. I'mma do my best to include accurate renditions in future episodes before I go into the 'Babish' version!

I think you forgot the ethylbenzene and fish shaped dirt.

There is actually a Chinese restaurant near my house in Seattle called Regent, the creators of the game use to eat there and they based the cake off their Black Forest cake.

My mother made the cheapest version of this for my 7th birthday. Boxed cake, homemade whipped cream and a can of Cherries. I’m 40 and it is still my favorite birthday cake ever.

I just finished making one of these. Some advice: Cook the Jam filling on a high heat for a bit otherwise the corn starch will make it taste bad, while doing this be careful not to burn the sugar. Place the chocolate bar you are going to grate in the fridge before grating it, then put the flakes in the fridge before decorating. Use a cake spreader thing (I don't know the actual name, it's a little square peice of semi flexible plastic) If using a cake stand put a plate on it first. This might seem obvious to most of you but I was an idiot and assembled it on the cake stand and then it wouldn't fit in my fridge. Luckily I managed to lift it off with a serving slice and brute force and by some miracle it all stayed together.

Okay, but fake recipie from the robot aside, there is an ACTUAL cake recipe hidden in the game. I don't remember where exactly, but it's hidden somewhere.

The true Portal cake is a Black Forest cake from the Regent bakery in Bellevue, Washington. Close to Valve's HQ and is where Valve bought the cake for reference.

The cake in the game was actually based on a Black Forest cake from a nearby bakery to the Valve office!

As a German, it took me way to long to realize „Black Forest Cake“ is Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte

While this is a good and tasty looking facsimile, the actual recipe for the Portal cake (which was based on a cake made at a local Seattle bakery) is listed in the game on computer monitors, and can also be found on the Portal Wikia. I'm sure you can't go wrong either way, but the option is there for those seeking the most authentic experience.

The only time babish could make the sandvich from tf2, would be on April 1st

In Germany "Kirsch" is usually called "Kirschwasser" (Cherry-water)

By the way it‘s called: „Kirschwasser“ which means cherry-water. It‘s basically distilled alcohol made from cherries.

I tried making this cake a few days ago with a friend, and everything went wrong. We almost repainted the kitchen with whipped cream... Somehow the cake turned out okay.

It’s based on the cake that the crew of the game would get from the next door bakery every milestone. It is a Black Forest Cake with Coconut chocolate frosting and marinated cherries on buttercream rosettes, it’s great! I loved this

As a German and native Black Forest Resident, i will never stop to frost my Cakes with Whipped Cream :P Black Forest Cake needs alot of whipped Cream, the more the better xD

Cutting the cake in half is much easier when you make only a shallow incision on the outside, then wrap a strong yard around the cake (following the incision) to form a loop, and then pull on both ends to have the yarn loop cut the cake.

According to valve the cake should be “Chocolate cake with custard cream filling and bing cherries. Decorated with fresh whipping cream and chocolate shavings.” As made by the Regent Bakery & Café in Redmond, WA, which inspired the cake in the game. Your research could use some work.

"[the cake is] saturated with the delectable FAKE cherry tasting alcohol." I think you had the wrong bottle. The Kirsh I know is straight-up cherry brandy (or at least Collins tells me the translation for eau-de-vie is brandy) :p

Maybe a bit late for this, but if you take a thin peace of string, wrap it along the line where you wanna cut the base and then pull gently, you can very easily and cleanly divide the layers

It‘s called “Kirsch Wasser” in Germany. Which translates to cherry water. “Kirsch” is just the abbreviation of the name used in England and France.

Wait, Vinnie?! As in Brad's Vinnie?! That sounds wrong when said out loud, but I stand by the question.

If anyone has trouble with dividing the cake into even parts, use a tray with raised edges and just glide the knife along the top of the tray to get perfectly even sections. (it also saves a lot of time lol).

I admire that you old-school that cake dividing. My grandmother always made perfect layers like that, but I usually butcher mine. For those clumsy ones of us who end up with wonky shingles, you should demonstrate that lame cheat, the cake leveler. (You know, the thing with a wire that you can split cakes with, as well as slice off the domes.)

I don’t get why so many people are out raged by him not following the “official” recipe. I’ll have to look up everything so expect some edits, so I’ll try to list all of the toxic ingredients polyester resin causes irritation to the respiratory system and can be deadly if not in a well ventilated area ethylbenzene causes irritation to the eyes and is damaging to the central nervous system

The funny thing is, I think the flower-like shapes you make when you squeeze frosting out of a pastry bag are called "rosettes," which means "little roses." You, surprisingly, weren't far off!

This is one or maybe my favorit cake. My grandma baked that from time to time. Delicious. If you want to try Kirsch, try to get hands on a Vieille Cherry.

I don’t know much about baking but I’ve always wondered if you initially add the dry ingredients to the unbeaten eggs and then beat them would they incorporate and still add enough air to the batter so you don’t have to fold in the dry ingredients and risk deflating your batter too much?

i know your krabby patty episode was like a year ago but there was an episode that came out in 09 that gave more specific details like having the grill at 274 degrees and having the patty cook for 283 seconds per side. you probably won’t see this but i know you go for accuracy and thought i’d mention that
