The fact that he spoke in Tigrigna to express all his ideas comfortably without any problem made me smile. Not only are you an inspiration to those who want to participate in cycling, but to those of us who want to achieve something bigger and higher, you are indeed a shinning star.

I think the lack of diversity thing isn't something on purpose, but rather comes down to if any of these other groups/countries are interested in this sport. One example is soccer and how diversified it is because these countries put effort into their teams and the sport. Some people find wearing tight lycra alittle odd and funny and dont think much of cycling as a sport, well atleast in the US.

We need more blacks and more diversity in cycling. It’s nearly all white. All other sports have more diversity. Our sport needs change.
@TT-rk4uy
@TT-rk4uy 11 месяцев назад
Why do they to make a race thing. Africans do not have the budget, the roads and the culture of racing and it’s natural that they are not represented in big numbers. Why no one is saying, lack of representation of Chinese, Indians, and Asians in general (over 50% of world population) represented and just have to pick about “Africans / Black”. No one handed Biniam anything, it’s his determination, hard work, a bit of luck and he happens to be from Eritrea, a country that has over 100 years of bike race culture introduced by the Italians and the locals continued with passion. As a fellow Eritrean, African, race or colour of skin has nothing to do with it, we grew up idealizing great cyclists be they are Italians, Colombians or Americans. Give it a break.

I see ur point of view, but he only said that he hadn't had any imagination(expectation) in competing Tour de France b'coz he thought it was only for white ppls(he meant it was unreachable). Please don't stress the race I'm sure he wasn't intended to that. Thanks!

@@solomongebrehiwet3425 I am not stressing what Biniam said, and I understand his point of view but have read the title of the video? My point is, to those who are making it about “diversity, race, ethnicity etc”, even if he wins (out of his sheer talent and hard work) they make it sound as if it handed to him.

The reason blacks are not good cyclist is the same reason as why they are so good at running. On average they have longer tendons with shorter muscle. Obviously there is exception and that's why we should give a chance to everyone.

And why they are so good at basketball and football. And why they are not good at swimming; they have less body fat, more muscle, & heavier bones, so they are less buoyant. It's all termed genetics.

I think its more to do with environment and sport norms. Example ice hockey and swimming are not common in warm areas(with exception of australia & others)in addition needs access to infrastructure. Physical characterstics due also play a role.

It's irrelevant what color you are. SCOTUS just decided 6-3 that race cannot be used as an admission criterion. All are welcome in professional cycling if you can peddle a bike in a peloton averaging 25mph for six hours every day. The amateur levels have been reserved for us mere mortals.
@akimebrahtu5498
@akimebrahtu5498 11 месяцев назад
In our heavenly constellations it should be irrelevant However historically and presently, race and skin color have been factors that influence how individuals are treated and the opportunities they have access to. acknowledging and addressing should have been one of the first steps of many to reach irrelevance but to conclude naaa mate It is an ongoing process that requires the collective efforts of individuals then we can discuss about pedaling a bike
@davidspagnolo4870
@davidspagnolo4870 11 месяцев назад
That's a pretty simplistic take. There's probably a lot of people out there that have the physiology to be able to achieve world tour level fitness, but don't have the means to even buy a road bicycle much less devote their life to it. All SCOTUS really did was reaffirm that opportunities will continue to be most frequently taken by those who have the money to take advantage of the opportunity. That's why Biniam is such a good story, he beat incredible economic and geopolitical odds just to get into the world tour, to actually be a champion is just icing on the cake.
@stevemt3238
@stevemt3238 11 месяцев назад
@@davidspagnolo4870 Cycling is pretty simplistic, just peddling a bike. Similarly, basketball is pretty simplistic, dribbling a ball and shooting it through a hoop. A basketball is pretty inexpensive these days, and so are entry level bikes. For simplistic cycling, it's how far, how high, and how fast. People in Africa don't play much ice hockey. Likewise, Canadians aren't shooting many hoops. Believe it. The SCOTUS decision means that Asians and Whites will no longer be discriminated against. To paraphrase MLK, admissions will no longer be based on the color of one's skin, but instead on the content of their character.
@stevemt3238
@stevemt3238 11 месяцев назад
@@akimebrahtu5498 You are talking historically. Let's talk about the present. There are opportunities for everyone, especially in the US. We live in a meritocracy, where knowledge, skill, and perseverance, are how people make it in this world. I believe you have been listening to the race divisive side of the aisle.
@davidspagnolo4870
@davidspagnolo4870 11 месяцев назад
@@stevemt3238 cycling is not just pedaling a bike. If that's what you think it is, you haven't been paying attention. An entry level road bike is several months' salary for a huge portion of the global population. Add in having the infrastructure, free time, and community support systems, and you've taken the number of people who have the bare minimum means to become even high level amateur cyclists down to a fraction of the global population. Someone who takes very complicated things and boils them down to "success is easy, just be good at something" is someone who has very likely been sheltered from the economic realities of life for the vast majority of people. Sports equipment may be relatively affordable, but time is what's really valuable, and if you and everyone around you is spending all their time struggling to make ends meet, the chances that you go pro in any sport are about as slim as hitting the lotto. Also, not sure why you decided to bring SCOTUS and AA into this in the first place honestly. This is about an Eritreian. The decisions of the US courts are basically completely irrelevant in this discussion. It's a strange place for your mind to immediately jump to when you see a media piece about an African cyclist who has never lived in the US. Makes me think that your views on race aren't as enlightened as you make them out to be.
