He was essentially done at the end of 2020 - several years of illness, bad luck and bad form, he was on the verge of retirement & everyone (including him) knew it.... Then in 2021 Quickstep signed him at the last minute, just as a bit of a gamble/swansong I guess. Then their main sprinter was injured so Cav went to the Tour... where he won 4 more stages and the green jersey. Was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sports. Last year was a bit less spectacular but he did win a Giro stage, Milano-Torino and the British Champs in a superb race. Earlier this year he won the final stage of the Giro. He has announced his retirement so this really is the end now, but it has been a spectacular career... he's been an elite level sprinter as 3 generations of other sprinters have come and gone. Sprint GOAT for sure.

I hold that opinion as well. You can cleary see that he veers off of the sprint line and goes to the barriers when this is not allowed. That's sort of what used to happen until they changed the points classification scoring in 2011 - used to be 3 sprints a day with points of 6, 4 and 2. @wiwhwiwh1241 Год назад
@@jacobkilby good point! but I really meant that the bonifications would apply to the whole team! So if a sprinter wins an intermediate sprint and gains 6 sec, their GC leader also gains 6 sec . This would create lots of interesting dynamics in flat stages imho. Same for mountain stages, where a lieutenant could abandon his leader to try for the breakaway and earn him bonus seconds. It would be tactically sound to let good climbers go for stage win or breakaways instead of having to stay back and protect the leader. This would also be risky for the leader, who becomes more susceptible to attacks. I think such ideas (maybe tweaked / improved ) could add a lot to cycling.

So the strategy is for your lead out men to get relegated by getting you to the front in any way possible. That way your sprinter doesn't need to worry and the only people who lose points are the ones finishing 15 or 20th already. Is it me or have sprint finished become more dangerous over the years? Yeah it's an interesting subject - when the leadout team does bad things that help their sprinter win, what actions should the officials take? It doesn't work to relegate MVDP when the actions he took were entirely to benefit JP. In some situations, it would be unfair to also relegate the sprinter if they didn't do anything wrong themselves. It's a weird situation. Perhaps it would make sense to take some action preventing the offender from taking part in the sprints/leadouts in some upcoming stages. But enforcing that could be problematic.
@garrywallah4966
@garrywallah4966 Год назад
Clear justified disqualification if you follow the rule book. TBH it should DQ the team mates as well if you really want to promote and implement "safe sprinting" as It doesn't matter if it's during the sprint or not, MVDP finds himself boxed in with his sprinter on his wheel which is his OWN fault as a lead out man to find himself there then violently uses his elbow/shoulder to push Grimay out the way which is fine when defending a position but not when aggressively moving a rider and then it moves him far off his line which was extremely lucky it didn't cause a crash as there were no riders around him at the time. We just need some consistency with the rules.
@dkvikingkd233
@dkvikingkd233 Год назад
But if sprinter's leadouts can push competition out of the way and "just" gets personally relegated for that, but keeping the team advantage of having cleared the way for their own sprinter, then why wouldn't they always just try to do that? (Seems like a dangerous rule approach to me)

The breakaways on a sprint stage these days are just for show anyway. Like they get 3 minutes , no more. and really dont have any chance to make it. theres only a few sprinter opportunities. and lots of sprint teams. So really no point.

The whole idea of relegating an individual that is doing something to help a team mate in a sprint is ridiculous. The team should loose any chance of winning if a lead out guy gets relegated in the last 500 metres. Or even having it referred to if that relegated move helped another team mate win. Agree it's bloody stupid and pointless to relegate someone that is't trying to win anyway. Some things in the sport need to change.

How long until this escalates into taking out a GC contender deliberately?
