I'm an amateur astronomer and use a telescope all the time to take astrophotographs of the night sky. After inheriting some old Tasco 7x35s, I thought I'd give them a try for stargazing. I was really disappointed to learn that they produced a very poor double image even after focusing - something I hadn't even thought was possible since I'm used to a telescope. After a couple of hours of scouring the internet on how to collimate binoculars, I found out that my binoculars don't even have collimation screws, at least not accessible without taking most of the binoculars apart. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on some new $200 Celestron binoculars when I found this video and was able to easily correct the double image. I didn't even have to take the objective lenses off...they were just tightly screwed in and when I loosened them I was able to rotate them to remove the double image. I can't thank you enough for this! Saved me some serious money.

Hi Brian, I'm so pleased you've found this video useful. I had exactly the same problem with no visible screws on my pair- they must be there but like you I did not want to remove the leathercloth either. I do have a written version of this film: thegreenlever.blogspot.com/2016/08/binocular-collimation-quick-and-easy.html#.X66Qh3fk-V5 and if you scroll down, once on the page, I have on-going related articles for different techniques of binocular collimation. Many thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. I also received some Tasco binoculars except mine has a zoom feature so it’s a 7X-15X35 and my image isn’t properly aligned. However, when I adjust the front of the lenses it seems to only move the images vertically, but mine need to be moved horizontally to fix the images. Do you know of another way to adjust these?

I worked on optics in the military. This is the most practical way of collimating binoculars outside of a well equipped optical service facility. Also if the technician is skilled, the objectives don't have to be removed (thus retaining the anti fog nitrogen gas in the instrument).

Hi again Andy I forgot to mention that this film like most of the others on my channel has a detailed written version on my site - here is the link if you are interested: thegreenlever.blogspot.com/2016/08/binocular-collimation-quick-and-easy.html#.X2hutXcv6V4 I am also about to attempt a collimation on a pair binoculars I have been given and on first sight it looks as though someone has already attempted to adjust the prisms. I will be making a film of this in the next few days and hoping I will still be able to just correct them by the simple realignment method, so this too might be of interest. All the very best Andy

So delighted that you've found this to be useful. If you haven't yet done it, make sure you've made a removable reference mark on each objective and that your spanner for undoing the locking ring doesn't touch the lens surface. Thank you for this video. This is the only source for this information that I was able to find. I had to modify your technique a bit for my binoculars. Rotating the entire bezel certainly did work to temporarily collimate the binoculars, but retightening the bezel and moving the lense into that same position didn't work. I'm guessing it has to do with different thread pitches between the bezel and the lense. So, I simply loosened the spanner ring a little bit, and rotated the lense with a nitrile gloved hand until it was as good as it could get. Then I had to do the same for the other side to get it reasonably good. These 7x50 Binolux binos were only $15, so I'm happy with the result from the home repair. I discovered that my eyes & brain would adjust to the double vision mid job, resulting in having to go back and readjust the collimation a couple more times. And, seeing double was nauseating after awhile. Taking frequent breaks during this job seems reasonable.

I can't believe it. For months I have been viewing videos on how to correct out of alignment binoculars, and every one of them teaches to adjust the screws. Only problem, my binoculars are totally covered with a rubber coating. Thus, I could not access/locate any screws. Ready to throw in the towel, I decided to give video searching one last chance, and sure glad I did. Although I haven't figured out how to adjust the lens within, I simply turned the entire lens housing per your instruction. Half a turn and I no longer see a double image! I can leave it at that since the rubber tends to keep the housing from turning without significant force. THANKS!

Hi Jake. I went through the same deliberations as yourself and kept thinking 'surely when they make these they don't have to go through all that prism/screw stuff just to set the binos up.' As some-one else commented, I cannot see how just rotating a lens around the same axis alters the light path direction unless the lense isn't perfectly symmetrical and this is what you are depending on. I have rotated eyepiece lenses to make a seemingly small difference on view appearance so perhaps this is the same type of thing that you are doing with the objective. I usually do a screw adjustment on the prisms if I can get at them. The perfect solution though is just use monoculars and then forget about it lol. I actually have several small monoculars and after fiddling a bit with those (for example swopping a better prism from some broken compact bins into a monoc and/or adjusting the eye lenses and cleaning) I'm finding they are really very handy on a neck strap and surprisingly effective especially a little 4x12 Viking monic that I "adjusted". I even prefer it now to the 4x, 6x and 8x Specwells that I collected. I showed it to some-one the other day and first thing they said was "that's better than bins". I still use bins also but I'm using the monocs more and more or at least alongside bins and won't even get the bins out unless I need the extra power. I'll just caution though for anyone considering the 4x12, it's good but pretty unremarkable before my alteration which involves some filing.
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 6 лет назад
Hi, thanks for your comment. The objective lenses in most post WWII binos are mounted in two eccentric rings which you cannot see until you remove the retaining rings. By rotating the rings the optical axis of the lens is shifted. As the video shows the correction may be quickly achieved. In my case, the binoculars were second-hand and I believe it is possible that someone had cleaned the objectives by removing them without being aware of the ring/lens arrangement. Thanks for watching, best wishes from Normandie, Andy.

Thanks. So indeed a simple way to fix such bins. I trashed one of my own bins today. I managed to get the rubber covering off easily but then the collimating screws were bloody brass and seemed to have welded to the alloy body and so were impossible to unsieze without destroying them. Nothing is ever simple except perhaps your technique. I just binned the bin but not before checking whether I could re-use any of the parts. I've still got plenty of better bins so no worries. Pity they didn't have WWII rings but now with most bins being gas sealed they aren't meant to be opened once sealed, mostly in china, but with many being not very well put together, at least the early ones. Enjoy your restored bin. I know when I get a good result tinkering with mine it is rewarding.

@@samsen201 And you'll have twice as many devices. The reason binos are so prevalent is that people are simply used to them. It takes some practice to relax your unused eye with monos. Less the half the weight, way less hassle, less than half the size....its an obvious choice. And so very compact with a roof prism.

Do you know the power and aperture of these instruments? Usually it's written somewhere on them i.e. 7x50; that is to say in this case a magnification of 7 and an objective lens diameter of 50mm. Sometimes the magnification is very high for the aperture selected resulting in a dull image. I know that often old binoculars and telescopes can develop a bloom on the internal optical surfaces resulting in reduced image brightness. If you hold them up and look through them from the objective lens end, can you see any mistiness? Get back to me if you have any more questions. Cheers, Andy.

@@Organikmechanic i know the binos are 10x30 wide angle 7.5deg and they work fine no issues with them aside from the left ocular being a bit lose but not sure about the telescope ,its a small one that is only 5.5" inches when collapsed and 13" when expanded but no mention of the power, i suppose i can always roughly measure the lenses and they appear to be 7x30,i did unscrew the objective and had it cleaned and the ocular came out as well and appeared to be two or more lenses in a small plastic tube holding them and i did not bother cleaning them ,also there is another lens just further down or perhaps another one of these tubes on the end of the same first brass pipe so these things are more complicated than i thought ,i think they always had this dimness problem and not sure if it has anything to do with blooming as you say? also looking at it in reverse is not telling me much
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 3 года назад
@@ARCSTREAMS Hi there, sorry for not replying sooner, but I missed your reply in my mailbox. Would you say that the power of the telescope is the same as the binoculars, or more, or less? If you've measured the objective lens and found it to be 30mm then if the magnification is greater than the binoculars then I would definitely expect the image to be darker. The other point is that although the objective lens diameter can be measured, often manufacturers put a baffle further down the optical tube to eliminate aberrations due to poorly shaped or lower quality lens glass this may result in some of the incident light not coming to the eyepiece and hence a dimmer image. As to how 'complicated' these things are then yes, the design and manufacture has moved on since the time of Galileo - that's progress! Hope this is of some help, but do get back to me if you need any more ideas. Best Wishes from a very damp Normandie, Andy.

I understand these binoculars are rubber armoured, so are the cracks just in this coating? If the lenses are mouldy is this just on the outside surface or do you think that the contamination/mould is inside? If the latter then I would say that they are no longer sealed/waterproof. They may be too badly damaged. Steiner have distributors in many countries and you could contact them for an opinion, possibly attach images of the damage. Hope this is of some help. Hi Michael, I've never tried re-aligning binoculars like that, but reading around the subject I would say that if you want to try this method then forget the gas inside. At the moment I am assuming that the binos are unusable in their present state so you have nothing to lose and if you are not using these in an exceptionally wet/humid environment then you would be better off keeping them in a sealable plastic box with a silica gel sachet when not in use. I have read comments on this type of gas-filled binocular and as always there are divided opinions on these. Specifically that the gases eventually escape to outside to be replaced with atmospheric air. Hope this is of some use, meanwhile, thanks for watching and for commenting. Best Wishes from Normandie, Andy.

how is it that rotating and perfectly symmetrical objective lens will create a better image?
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 2 года назад
Hi Arcsteams, the lens is perfectly symmetrical, but it is mounted in an eccentric ring which when rotated in the housing will shift the central axis of the lens. I think it's a very elegant way of having adjustment without fiddling with the prisms. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best wishes from Normandie, Andy.
@ARCSTREAMS
@ARCSTREAMS 2 года назад
@@Organikmechanic hmm so the ring under the lens shifts the lens axis? i guess they designed it that way in order to make this adjustment then, but why not simply use a level flat ring? perhaps because the prism may go out of alignment and they want to give the option of adjusting it from the object lens i suppose?

Do you know? What is the problem when the binocular dont have a clear focus on the center field? My binocular have a clear focus on the right field, not on the center, why?
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 3 года назад
Hi Cristea, Can you alter the focus, so that the opposite is true, so that the centre field is in focus and the perimeter is not? If you can then there is a problem with one of the lenses being skewed and not seated properly in the objective lens cell. Is this a new problem you have with the binoculars or has it always been the case? For example, have they been knocked or dropped or has someone altered the lenses. I recently produced another film, where somebody had clumsily tried to correct a problem before I was given them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GySOR_ppolA.html. Here in this film, the binoculars showed tell-tale marks on the casing where someone had obviously tampered with the prism screws. Get back to me and hopefully I can give you some more information. Cheers, Andy

at 2:05 you did not mention that you re tightened the lens back to place before you added a marker and reference line on the card, im assuming that's what you done ,is it possible to remove the ocular lenses in order to clean them from the inside as well? i done this to the objectives but im worried about trying to do the same with the oculars because the right one has the diopter adjustment motion and the left one although should be locked in place does have bit of slack probably from bad handling and if i try to remove them im worried i make break something or mess up the threads ,not sure these are made to be removed like that? would like to unscrew the prism holders and give them a clean as well but figured perhaps i should not move them and hope that its relatively dust free inside ,in any case i dont have any dust issues like that and the best i can do is clean the objectives from inside and out and the oculars from outside only ,i will try to see the stars at night to make sure its still collimated ,if im seeing double then ill try to adjust the equatorial as this helped in the past,hopefully i dont need more work on them
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 3 года назад
Arcstreams. Yes the objective was in its' original position. I did not tighten it fully though as I knew I was going to need to rotate it to obtain optimum alignment. You can remove the objective cell to clean the inside surface but I would think that most contamination will be on the outer surface. Possibly you should just blow off any dust with a lens blower rather than try to clean it. The technique to clean finger marks or grease off the outer face of the objective is possible but be aware that the lens is treated with special coatings that are very delicate so unless you really need to, resist the urge. Read up on the appropriate methods before you try. I would not touch the prism holders at all . Hope this helps, best wishes from Normandie, Andy.

@@ARCSTREAMS Hi there, yet another one of your replies that has slipped under the radar! You're obviously being very careful with cleaning the lenses. I have cleaned lenses this way but tend to avoid doing it unless really pushed. My wife's brother-in-law who is a TV cameraman and a keen photographer bought a lens cleaning kit (I think from Amazon) which uses alcohol-based liquid and special swabs which should only be used once. His lenses are immaculate but woe betide anyone that touches the glass!! Hope the snow's gone and Spring finally springing for you. Cheers from a damp Normandie, Andy.

@@Organikmechanic yes i really prefer just to give them a cleaning from the outside specially if they have never been opened and have no dust in them id like to keep it that way but sometimes my ambition gets the better of me and i tend to take things apart and clean everything as it does a much better job with the cloth reaching the entire surface areas of the lenses then doing it from outside,i do not like doing circular wiping which is what im limited to when doing it from outside so i take them all apart and use plastic gloves to hold each one while i buff them with the cloth and solution in one wipe across the faces,, i think at one time i may have cleaned the prisms on the binos but they work great , i just use a cleaner made for glasses with those micro cloths ,works well enough but sometimes vinegar and water is the best cleaner ,ohh the snow is all gone and better days are ahead with high 20's this whole week even reaching 27 :) ill be going fishing soon enough again ,cheers

How did it get out of alignment in the first place
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 5 лет назад
Good question, Rick. I bought the binoculars secondhand from a camera shop and I suspect that either the previous owner or someone in the shop had cleaned the instrument without realising the importance of the objective lens cell. I certainly cannot see any other reason for the type of image shift. The fault was there when I purchased them but was not serious enough to cause any eye strain or discomfort when used for short periods i.e. trying them out in the shop. I suspect that the older the instrument the more likely it will have some defects introduced by 'maintenance'. I'll shortly be doing another video on a pair of WWII binoculars which appear to have a similar problem and I hope a logical explanation and solution. Many thanks for watching and commenting. Best Wishes from Normandie, Andy.

We’re going to Big Bend in a couple of weeks ru-vid.comUgkxSt0aBrzyS1nxONvwm1e0u7ZDFD_eypAO so I bought these to use during the hikes, didn’t want to miss anything. As you can see by the photos I tested the phone adapter by taking a phone of a power pole on the next block and you can see the results. It took a couple of minutes to line the phone camera up to the eye piece, there’s a bit of a learning curve, but once it was longed up it stayed in place without any issues. So far I’m impressed with the feel and the weight, the neck strap is wide and soft so it feels good on my neck. I look forward to using it with my friend and grandson in Big Bend!

I have just received a set of 10-30x50 Celestron G2 binoculars. They're not good! Celestron has disgraced itself by selling this cheap and nasty rubbish! Since receiving them I've looked at them and compared them to the cheap and nasty ebay 10-180x100 binoculars that cost less than half the price of the Celestrons (the ebay ones are actually 10-30x50, despite what they say on their cases), and they're *the same binoculars* but the Celestrons have different rubber parts and zoom lever. Not the slightest difference for anything of importance to the optical capabilities of the binoculars. The Celestron G2 binoculars are a total rip-off! Buyer beware!!!

Hi Danny, sorry for not replying sooner. Interesting what you say about your purchase. Just out of interest, the Author of the book I show in the video does not like zoom binos at all! He claims they are never well collimated and will not stay collimated over the zoom range. Cheers, Andy.

@@Organikmechanic thanks Andy. I sent the Celestron back and got a Nikon 10-22x50. Not perfect, as you describe, but a lot better than the Celestron. Apparently, there was some other manufacturing fault in one of the lenses in the Celestron, so it had no chance of doing the job properly.

Nifty process and interesting to know, but definitely more than 10 minutes' work when factoring in making the tool to unscrew the objective and any mounting requirements, also wouldn't work for any binoculars that are fully encased & waterproof. Also depends on knowing that the objective is aspherical, could be a big waste of time if it isn't!
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 3 года назад
Hi JM, O.K. My point was that the actual re-alignment process had taken me ten minutes to achieve. Most 'how to's' I've ever seen rarely talk about the time taken to acquire tools, raw materials, background reading etc. I would not consider breaking the seal on waterproof binos as that is a specialist job normally requiring recharging with nitrogen. Why would bino objectives be aspherical? As far as I understand most binoculars have spherical lenses as they are easier to manufacture. It is the objective lens mount that is eccentric and enables the alignment to be corrected. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best Wishes from Normandie Andy.

one qustion, how to determine which lense should turned left or right
@Organikmechanic
@Organikmechanic 7 лет назад
Hi, that's a very good question. As this is a 'quick 'method the only way is to try one lens and if there is not enough adjustment, then repeat with the second lens. Of course, this can mean that the optical axis of the binoculars is not aligned to the principal axis i.e. the binoculars look slightly left, right, up or down but I believe that in most cases this would be virtually undetectable. Hope this helps. Many thanks for watching. Best Wishes from Normandie, Andy.
