If you're wondering about 2 players on screen at once, that was just me experimenting with video editing to make it look cool. Sorry for the confusion...I really wanna play that though
You can kinda/sorta play co-op on the DS version, but the other person appears as a star that moves around if you're in the same room. It's still really neat though, but you need 2 DS consoles to play it
There are A LOT of Resident Evil channels out there sharing the same facts that have been floating around online for years and you come in with your fancy Japanese guidebooks and blow them all out of the water. Listening to the majority of these channels there were very few differences between the Saturn port and the PS port but I find it absolutely fascinating that the Tyrant dissolves and the tanks are broken. Another fantastic video!
Haha it seems like during the pandemic so many RE channels popped up (myself included!). I wanted to do something different and I think it's a good way to contribute and force myself to study hehe Most of the differences came from the 2 links I put in the description and some of my own, but yeah I was surprised there wasn't a comparison video with 880k views of every little difference from 10 years ago. The RU-vidr Same Name Different Game did a really good video about RE 96 and talked about some of the same stuff here. If you rewatch my vid, when the tyrant starts dissolving Chris kinda does a double take and walks back ... That was my first time playing that and I was legit like "wtf is going on here" haha And thanks again for your support man!
@@raccooncitycinema No problem. I've actually been sharing your vids with my friends who love Classic RE. Hopefully they've been subscribing as well. Keep up the excellent work!
Back in the mid 90s when Resident evil first appeared I played the Saturn version first, so I fell in love with that one. Thanks for bringing back so many memories from that time! (I'm a grandfather now btw, so I was not a kid at that time). Btw, I remember the magazines from back then, specifically Gamepro, mentioning the demo and they wrote about a chainsaw weapon, which I have never seen in any demo footage. It would be great if you could investigate about it! Congrats on the channel and thank you again for the memories.
Wow, very interesting! I think I found what you're talking about here: residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/GamePro?file=GamePro_Issue_77_-_page_188.png Looks like it was a version supposed to be released Dec. 95. The wiki says it's full of mistakes or an edited version of the game. Well I think it's the latter. The article says there is a tower location. Actually there was a tower area planned! I translated the planning documents on twitter for this. Next it says there was a hammer item. In the game files you can find a pick axe. You used it to pry up some boards or something like that. It seems there very well could've been a chainsaw in the game, but it was cut like the other things above. They mention a cross bow too, they likely had the idea and just brought it back for RE2. Cool stuff, maybe I'll make a video about it some day! And thank you so much! Glad it could bring back good memories. I've got young kids now and I really hope they start with the classics, which feels kinda funny to say 😁
Resident Evil 1 is my favorite from the franchise, I still remember the sweet nostalgia playing this game in a dim lit room with my brother back in the good old days.
Great vid! I love how much more vivid the colors are on the Saturn version of RE. The devs went above and beyond with this version and it definitely deserves just as much love as the original PS release. If Capcom ever decides to release a classics collection I'd hope they would include this version of the game on it as well.
As someone who's been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, I've got to say, it's nice to finally get some recognition with that dedicated Bio Hazard Maniac section... It meets my EXACT specifications! 👁️👄👁️
Haha thank you!! There's some really cool stuff in the books I've yet to cover, and also some really dumb stuff that's strangely interesting. Either way, can't wait to dig into them
I wanted more of this type of content and I got it! This is SPECTACULAR fun information that takes me back. Keep killing it and I cannot wait for your next video.
Hey man glad to hear it, thank you!! Yeah this was so nostalgic to replay. At this point there's nothing scary, it's more like comfort food and so charming.
That soundtrack is what I refer to as “clowns farting” and anyone can recreate this by going into a guitar center and putting a horn setting on a synth then proceed to hit random notes with no scale knowledge whatsoever.
Judging by the differences in the demo reels, it's quite clear they ported the remote-player code from the PlayStation version directly to saturn unchanged, and didn't factor in changes in performance between the two platforms, meaning on the saturn version the player bumps into walls and aims incorrectly throughout the demo reel.
Ah, very interesting! There are also slight and major differences in the demo reels between RE2 on PS, 64 and DC, and REmake on GC and the HD remaster. I showed parts of them in my other videos. Thank you for commenting because I was wondering how they did those. I was picturing some poor intern memorizing it and trying to replay it exactly haha
Wow, now you've just brought the big guns to the table. I hardly remember about the Saturn version when I think about the original RE, yet it has so many cool features. And this guidebook content is simply superb, especially all the cool artwork. Also, the fact that Chris smokes in the uncut FMV intro explains why he has a lighter as his default item in his scenario (:
Again great insight about Chris lighter, thank you! Yeah it does have a lot of cool features, it's a shame they didn't come to later ports. And yes, this was a big project. Recorded over 100 gigs of footage!
Do they explain why Leon/Clair have basically any item they have in RE2? Like Claire isn't some officer yet she just has a knife and lockpicks (if I remember correctly) and Leon has a lighter too
@@velvetbutterflyClaire in the books is explained to have gun, knife and lock pick knowledge bc of Chris teaching her how to defend herself. Leon with the lighter is a mystery. Might have been a gift from his dad who gets mentioned in the books. Don’t remember though.
The legend strikes again with another great video! Glad to see you took your time with the Saturn version! The little details make it so unique and interesting to look at, even if they are cleverly hidden or just in plain sight. And even more so how Barry's voice is slightly changed after defeating Plant 42. That's a detail I never noticed before! While we can agree that the Saturn version has its own flaws, it is an underrated gem that deserves more attention. This guidebook really shows the love and care it got. Cheers for another great video! Hope you can take it easy for now before focusing on your next project. Sending some positivity to you as always! :)
Yes it really is unique, and it's kinda like an onion, you can keep peeling away and finding something else. I read about that Barry line on an old Gamefaqs thread. I linked to it in the description, and there are more differences I couldn't talk about. I wonder what the story behind that one line is? And thank you again for the positivity! We all need it👍 Gonna relax and try the Daymare 1994 demo soon Take care my friend
@@raccooncitycinema Exactly! It really shows how small details become somewhat noticeable years after its release. That's what makes RE so special to many people. And yeah, I noticed that link too. But considering how Barry sounds subdued, my guess is that they probably wanted to make the cutscene a bit more serious as opposed of having him ramp up the cheesiness of RE1's voice acting to eleven. And no problemo! We all deserve time to kick back and relax! I'm sure Daymare will keep you hooked for a good while. Hope you have a wonderful day! :)
No problem! This is one of my rarer books and the art inside is really cool. Definitely one of my favorites for that reason. And thank you for watching!
For me as a kid, the most deadly enemy in the game was a scratch on the CD of the copy I would rent at the video store. Every time I got to the part where you drain the pool, the game would freeze at that CG cut scene, effectively ending all my games. And I didn't have a memory card, so I would have to start all over in the hopes that maybe this next time it would let me pass, but no, always a game over at that damn pool. But I was young, dumb, and loved the game so much that I'd keep renting it anyway, even knowing I would never be able to pass that spot.
Thanks so much! I feel like I should start every video with Snake and the "kept you waiting huh" haha Hopefully future videos are interesting too. There's bound to be a few stinkers. Although I'm not trying to just push "content". there's some weird and interesting stuff in the books I wanna share still.
man finding your channel was tough - you don’t come up in search results, luckily i found this vid again by searching ‘guidebook’ - anyway, this version is so much fun, thanks for the vids
Haha this book has really cool art! Think it cost between 700 to 900 yen, it's a little uncommon I think. And thank you! I'm just starting my work day, so your comment made my day!
Absolutely incredible presentation, and so many details I didn't know! Got to get a Saturn and do another playthrough for some of these changes. I could see this version being definitive if not for sedate Barry. And you got to love that new ending theme. Thank you so much for sharing all this awesome info. This channel and Gun Shop should be the premier Resi channels in terms of subscriber count. This is easily worthy of being pressed to disc for one of the Resident Evil CG films as a bonus feature.
Man, your comments really make my day, thank you! I've been slaving away every night translating for my REmake part 3 vid, and hearing my work should be a bonus feature is just amazing! And yeah if you can't get a Saturn emulation is coming along well. Saturn hardware is cheap in Japan and the game was about 8 dollars .... A us or pal copy though .... Speaking of, just recently I did a quick translation of some cut text from Outbreak for Gun Shop. So maybe if they talk about it in a video I'll get a shout out, that would be awesome. Thanks again for all the kind words👍
Actually yes he does, and I got a shout out in his 25 facts about Steve video for something I found! I thought of my channel as the poor man's Ink Ribbon so getting acknowledged there was huge for me! And thanks so much!
There is something that causes the plant to keep attacking you in the greenhouse but I can't for the life of me remember. My brother and I had it happen once out of nowhere and it caught us by surprise but it didn't happen every time ( we also had both versions so I could be putting them together in confusion). Maybe it's a glitch or the it's just one of those weird differences. Also I really like what you're doing. For sure a refreshing take on RE info videos. Keep it up!
Hah it really is surprising isn't it? Other commenters have said its a glitch in all versions so yeah could have been either one. And thank you! Will keep grinding away at this mountain of games and books👍
Skipping this video for a few days now and finally watched it. I thought it was going to be the same as usual, but you really gave some deep perspective about the differences. Thumbs way up and a new sub, shawty!
13:35 In regards to the Greenhouse Plant "skip", the plant can knock you back (or forward) depending on your orientation facing the plant. A fairly consistent skip can be preformed in a Jill glitched speedrun relatively easily. Upon entering the room, move forward stopping short just before the plant (roughly adjacent to the long red planter in front of the plant). Aim your gun, I find the bazooka/grenade launcher usually works best, rotate 360 degrees, walk forward, and the plant will knock you to the back of the room allowing you to grab the Armor Key. Something about rotating 360 degrees in a circle just "breaks" the physics of your interactions with the hit boxes of Jill and the plant. We aren't exactly sure why this works, but it does. I hope this helps. Amazing content! As a huge RE fan and speedrunner, I love finding different takes on information about RE I've never found before. Thanks for the videos, cheers!
That is so strange haha! Thank you, that's just what I was wanting to know 👍 Oh, you're a speedrunner! My hat's off to you because that's some impressive stuff.
Nice to see another upload, one of the most hype things I see in my sub-feed tbh :d You asked about being whipped across the room to the key by the vines/plant thing and I think that's a glitch you can do in any version by aiming and/or shooting, starting backed-up against the potted "non alive plants", that way you can move slightly closer/inside the hitbox where the whipping action usually starts then you could've done by normal means and that somehow makes you fly the other direction :0 (at least that's my somewhat educated guess)! Anyway, great video as per usual! Take care! :)
Awesome, so glad to hear that! Uploads are few and far between round here unfortunately. Ah, that sounds like what happened actually! Thank you, you too!
Wait!? The Japanese features different voice acting at points?! I was under the impression that all the voice acting was the same! I cannot believe, that possibly the most infamous voice acting in gaming has more line reads and no one has talked about it. Not even LotusPrince in his excellent RE comparison videos. Do you know if any of the other lines differ?
It's pretty crazy isn't it?! I first read about it on Gamefaqs, but I did see it mentioned on another video while working on mine. This vid is great and has a bit about the history behind the Sat version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GP2TNIqsTpw.html Oh, and I don't know if there are any other readings
I absolutely love your content. Resident Evil is my favorite series and I constantly watch Bawkbasoup / WolfDNC speed runs and mods. I’m constantly looking for new content to watch in relation to the RE franchise. Your videos always provide me with new facts / details I wasn’t aware of. Will you consider doing a RE 1.5 video in the future? There’s very little in relation to the history of this game. Thanks again for your hard work!!!
Wow I'm really happy to hear that, thank you! 1.5 is one I'd really like to cover eventually. I've got a ton of videos and books to cover, but I'll collect any research material as I go. (Also just picked up the Itchy Tasty book so there's bound to be a lot of info in there!)
@@raccooncitycinema Of course!!! I shared your channel and content with all of my RE friends. I also suggest sharing your content / links via the RE subreddit.
Haha you summoned me from my culture tank to press the upload button! This video took a looooong time getting all the different clips. Hope you liked it
That was a very informative video. Great job. I also really like the Japanese Saturn Version. I grew up with the Playstation Pal version of Resident Evil and did not play any Biohazard game until I got my Sega Saturn in 2017. and I did not reget doing so. I have finished the game a couple of times since I got my copy and I had always a great time.
That's good to hear! I know how you feel. Strangely, the original RE1 has become like a comfort game, so I can fire it up when I just want to relax haha. Thanks for sharing and watching!
Very cool, I'll definitely watch the whole thing at some point. I love that there are so many differences. I think the wildest one for me is that in the Saturn (or Japanese Saturn version) you can clearly hear Barry talking to Wesker in the guardhouse. I'm pretty sure you have to go the broken shotgun route to activate the scene though. It's when Jill is listening from the other side of the door. The audio is completely different from the 96 PSX version. The echo in the audio makes me think that Barry and Wesker were talking near the shark tank and Barry came up the ladder and moved the bookshelf by the time you enter the room.
@@raccooncitycinema Oh wow, figured you knew. Yea, I noticed it immediately the first time I played the Saturn version. I know it's in NA cause I recently played it, it's probably in Biohazard too for the Saturn.
Haha yeah I felt weird reading that but in the book it says 蜜蜂 which is "honey bee" I guess the virus makes it change into a different kind of bug haha
Wow, I never knew that Jill's handgun did more damage than Chris'. Yet another reason why Jill has a much easier time than Chris does! By the way, I actually had the Saturn version. I had first played Resident Evil at a friend's house, and this friend had a PlayStation. I only had a Saturn as of the time that the Saturn version came out, and I got it as a Christmas gift. Didn't get a PlayStation until 1998. My first PlayStation game? Resident Evil 2!
Resident Evil 1 is still by far my favourite RE for plot and setting. it's more grounded and is the only one that feels at least pseudo-realistic. Best characters as well IMO. The amount I (and I'm sure so many others) learned from your videos is substantial. Thank you.
Yes! That's a great way to describe it, pseudo-realistic. I do hope the series moves back to more grounded stories. And thanks again! Hope there'll be more takeaways in future videos. Working on RE4 right now, and there's at least one thing I think will surprise 99% of people.
@@NathanxLaMontagne I'm hoping to finish before the new year, but it depends on how busy I am at work and how healthy my kids are. But I got part 1 translated, audio recorded, and over 50 hours of gameplay footage, so I'll keep chipping away it. The editing process usually takes me a month. So sorry to keep you waiting, but glad to hear you're looking forward to it!
@@raccooncitycinema take your time and take care of yourself (and family) I, not I'd think anyone else minds waiting for quality, which you bring tons of. How long have you been learning Japanese? I thought about it (I've done Judo for like 20 years) but it's WAYYY too daunting for me to take on.
@@NathanxLaMontagne much appreciated! Well, I've been living in Japan for almost 10 years now but I only studied hard for a few of those years. Once my first kid was born I realized I should only speak English at home for his sake, so I partially started this project as a chance to keep studying. But my speaking ability has suffered. If you have the dedication to do Judo for 20 years (first of all, props to that!), I think learning Japanese isn't so hard. It has helped me immensely to be surrounded by it, and living with a Japanese person obviously, but if you set a goal and stick to it, it's not so bad. But I need to study more
Wow,I am considering myself as a RE1 fanatic but this video gave me some fire new info. Saturn version has some arcade-is SEGA-ish vibe to it, they should add Virtua Fighter 2 bonus like Jill vs Chris .
Really appreciate that, thanks! I work really hard to find new stuff, and love talking about it. If you like OG RE2 please check out my vid on that because there's stuff that even the experts didn't know in that.
13:30 this works on I think all versions of the game but it requires an unusually specific line-up to get it to knock you the right way, congrats on pulling it off by accident
@@raccooncitycinema That would be a very interesting comparison. I'm only familiar with the original ps1, directors cut and now the saturn version thanks to your vid. Also thank you! I look forward to watching more of your videos 😊
i love the saturn version of resident evil, is the most complete version in my opinion. i like the growling sound of the zombies, the only down part is the graphics because of the saturn capabilities. thank you for your videos.
Love the Saturn version, too, and all its additional content. I wish Capcom would put all the versions of RE1 into a collection with Saturn, DS, and PC
Fantastic video! I played through RE on Saturn for the first time about 2 years ago. It was definitely a fun change of pace as I had played the PS version many times over the years. I played through the PS1 and Saturn versions in fairly quick succession, and one thing that stood out about the Gold Tyrant battle is that the Saturn port has all the big canisters in the middle of the room removed- likely due to the Saturn's difficulty with transparency. I think, once that was done, Tyrant was far too easy as you could watch him the entire time as he slowly walked around the room. I think the 2nd Tyrant was done more as an increase in difficulty to compensate for the easier battle. Obviously still a nice "Saturn exclusive feature" but was likely born out of a simplified boss battle than a feature for the sake of giving the Saturn something unique. (not knocking the port! I love that it exists and my favorite game in my Saturn collection!)
That makes sense, I never considered that. That's cool to hear, the Saturn port is one I've always wanted but it's too expensive. I got the Japanese version for about 10 bucks, but I love the tall boxes of NTSC
@@raccooncitycinema I was lucky and picked up the Saturn version at a good price a bit before COVID (so I guess it was more than 2 years ago at this point). I’ll have to be on the lookout for a good price on a JP copy though! I didn’t know about the video differences.
I never knew about the heads and arms staying on the ground in the original Japanese version. Most interesting to me are the character model differences. On the whole, people consider the Saturn models to be worse, but I'm not sure I agree. Sure, the PlayStation characters have more realistic color and texture details, but notice how action figurey the joints look. I would say the characters' elbows and knees have a much cleaner, smoother look on Saturn that I probably would have never noticed, were it not for them being presented side-by-side, here.
Thanks for watching! This video was really long but covered pretty much the whole book. There is a page about the weapons but it's like "A handgun that can shoot quickly." And not much more
I played through this recently on the Saturn and it was fun but very hard. I thought I was conservative with Ink Ribbons but ran out and had to play a large section of the mansion and then go through the lab area underground before I found anymore. I kept dying on the way and having to do a 30-40 minute section over.
Well effort on transiting the once Japanese-exclusive guidebook to worldwide viewers. Perhaps I would expect something like detailed introduction of the Japan-only CD dramas and rarely mentioned novels like The Wicked North Sea.
@@raccooncitycinema My best bet for the novels would be Mercari or Yahoo Japan Auction (ヤフオク), since I recall these were never re-released even in Japan. The CD dramas are much easier if you can order in Amazon Japan.
I did not realize that there was a Saturn port. Well too late to add it to the review. Do it on its own as a stream or a port comparison, assuming I can get it running. Good vid, boss.
@@raccooncitycinema Well first task is to get the review done. It's in editing, waiting on a friend to get the some of the files narrated, and a speedrunning friend to put some thoughts together on the run he did for the review. Hopefully soon.
@@SurpriseNerf oh, that's cool you've got a team or people to work with! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with 👍 And yeah, editing. Man, been working on RE0 for months. Had to split it into to 20 minutes videos so my PC can even handle it, then I'll patch em together after. Good luck getting yours finished
@@raccooncitycinema hope you enjoy it, it's been a long time coming, easily distracted by shiny things. Parasite Eve took a month of my life for that review. Trying to balance humor, but still be informative is a tightrope.
Oh that's awesome! Knowing that maybe it'd be easier to trigger. Thanks for letting me know! I just spent hours trying to get Yawn to do the instant death attack in REmake. Finally got it...
Hey there, how do you do those "two" players sections in the video at 3:35 and 8:45 ? Is it just two separate playthrough meshed together in the video editor, or is it genuine two players action ?
Such a shame these guidebooks aren't being written anymore. 😢 They were clandestines of knowledge and researched their games deeper than anything else.
I just ordered a ton of these via ZenMarket, and I know due to some bulk buys that I got some doubles. Connect with me and when they arrive, you can have any duplicates you want!
It's called zonbie instead of zombie because there's no M in Japanese. You can see this with the Famicom/super Famicom too, their katakana actually spells out Famicon instead
Interesting! Was it removed for Chris and Jill? I thought I recorded the cinematic in Jill's game but I could be wrong. I do seem to remember not seeing it for Chris but I thought I just did something wrong
@@raccooncitycinema I did some research. You are correct. It plays in Jills game only. I think it makes the game easier because prevents her to be hit by neptune before the cinematics and far from the room with the switch
Thank you for checking! That's a good point, maybe they took it out to increase the difficulty. Or maybe they just forgot haha. Whatever the reason, very cool find and thank you for sharing 👍
0:10 you can call it whatever you want, but you can't deny it's memorable. Sure it's for all the wrong reasons. But it left a TROMBONE.mid shaped mark.
