I continue to wonder why people sell calcium sand.... It isnt safe for a single animal I've ever heard of. Why it continues to be sold blows my mind!!!

@@zacharymiller7641 your right, I didn't have completely accurate information. After a lot googling and looking at multiple sources, seems like no one recommends any sand on its own. Wild sand boas never live in just sand, and sand is real shit for creating burrows. Pretty much all sources I could find recommended mixing play sand (not calci sand) with other substrates like dirt and clay, if you insist on using sand. Oh, and all sources I could find agreed on that calci sand could be harmful, but even if it isn't, sand boas don't benefit from calci sand in any way, so there's really no point in using it.

Miika captivity tries to improve life spans of animals that may not ordinarily thrive in the wild. Husbandry standards are not always based on science, but on what results in thriving animals that otherwise might have half the lifespan in nature. You can find literally any answer you want online if you search hard enough. I do think it makes sense to be conservative and only use substrates with bearded dragons that they can pass. I will say that impaction typically has symptoms associated with it, so I question whether keeping bearded dragons on sand is a feeding technique issue or an owner not seeking medical attention soon enough.

In the dessert in Australia there is only 2 seasons - The Dry Season & The Wet Season. So for 6 months a year in northern Australia we do get flooding, a lot of rain and it's gets very humid, plus it is always hot, it's slightly cooler in the dry season. Plus they don't only live in the sandy dessert. I've seen them in dry bush, around a lot of termite mounds, watering holes, campsites with a grass floor and rocky environments We only get 4 seasons in the southern part of Australia, basically where I live. I hope that helps bearded dragon owners who don't live in Australia a bit more about the kind of environment they live in. Janelle (Melbourne, Australia)

@@tylerrugge you would love the Australian outback. The reptiles, birds and marsupials are definitely worth seeing in their natural environment. We are very strict on protecting our native species and I'm so proud of that. If you ever want to visit the best time would be around in our autumn to winter as you can't really visit northern Australia in the wet season (too dangerous). So I've escaped the cold winter in June & July to travel north during the dry season. I would say the best time to visit is May & June. So you visit Melbourne/ Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Sydney/NSW and Perth/southern Western Australia around then and then travel north to Queensland, Northern Territory and north Western Australia. I know some beautiful places to visit and if you need a guide in the Victorian state then just let me know. I can see you LOVING the animals that love here (well you already own a few). Plus you will fit in so well with the local people as well. I love the fact that you are going natural for your animals. How is Desmond going by the way? As a nurse my first thought was a TIA (Transient ischemic attack) or a stroke. I looked into it a bit online and it's more common in smaller beds of rabbits but in larger breeds it also can be more difficult to diagnose. I'd get a second opinion by a vet neurologist. As long as his teeth and gastrointestinal organs are normal then I'd look into nerve damage (like when you go to the dentist and they numb your mouth then you drool temporarily) to an issue within the brain. Thanks for all the great content you put out Tyler Janelle (Melbourne, Australia)

Riley Finley Substrate analysis has shown that most habitats contain 95.8% Quartz Sand (coloured with iron oxide). You are right, I am from Australia as well, they live on sand, some live on pure sand for their entire life. It doesn’t cause impaction, if you don’t keep your animals correctly, food impaction is an issbeenue. However sand itself can be passed without problems. Play sand has used by captive keepers here in Australia for decades. I keep my dragon on 100% sand. And there isn’t any issues. But to answer your question, Central Bearded Dragons do live on sand in the wild, more commonly than they live on dirt.

Coming from someone who is using this substrate. It does get dry on top very fast, and it's not as loose as most substrate because it packs very well. HowEVER, I found myself picking rocks and twigs out of the dirt that makes it alot more sketchy for dragons. I have had some issues with humidity, but my house is around 60%. I'm using a dehumidifier now and airing the enclosure out and it's doing better, sitting right at 40% like his.
@amandam8623
@amandam8623 5 лет назад
To help with the humidity, you can keep under the bowls moist for the bugs, and only spray the soil on the cool side and keep it covered with lots of leaf litter to hold the water in the soil. You can also just water right around where the plant roots would be instead of watering everything and causing a big humidity spike.

Yeah, but so what? That's a small price to pay for a vivarium that simulates a more natural environment and encourages instinctive behaviors like digging. Besides, if you raise your own feeders or only obtain them from very trusted sources, parasites are less likely to become an issue. Cleaning up the urates within a reasonable time frame also helps.

I have my bearded dragon on loose substrate but I covered most of the substrate with sandstone and other flat rocks both to help the dragon file down its nails whenever he runs across the Rock but also cover up most of the loose substrate so that he doesn't eat any accidentally To also avoid him accidentally eating some I make sure none of it gets in his food bowl and clean out his food bowl every day and I never put live insects in his food bowl I always feed him in a clear plastic tub that I have if it's any live insects so that there will be no loose substrate and he can just eat the insects as he pleases without them hiding

Doesn’t it stink from the poop? I clean the poop out every day. I use plastic shelf liner that has some texture. I put piles of hay that they use for rabbits in small piles around the cage. It works great. I can pick the poop on top with small amounts of alfalfa hay that is easy to pick up. They don’t eat the hay, but it is safe for rabbits to eat and is not moist. I have three dragons in two tanks that love it around the perches and branches and caves. The will usually like to poop mainly in the shallow piles of hay.

A ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat (NOT on a timer) in a addition to the basking bulb helps pull humidity from the enclosure, as does a good amount of top ventilation. If additional humidity reduction is needed, you can hide a sock full of dry rice inside the enclosure, use Damprid (or generic) near (NOT inside!) the enclosure, run a room size dehumidifier, stuff like that. I always run the CHE on a thermostat, but in the summer I also have to use generic Damprid because I'm in MO and MO summers feel like an old man's sweaty ballsack even with the AC running lol.

Vertical climbing elements are often overlooked, but beardies love to hang on the side of trees and posts. They even sleep that way a lot. Please react to ‘Catch em All fishing’ where he ‘saves’ all the Betta fish and releases them in a pond.

Ruth 12344 If you watched his updated video he took them all out and gave them to the pet store where he bought them to give away for free to any of his subscribers.

Bearded dragons don't really drink from water bowls. Some do but most get their water intake through their food.

I think ppl dont like loose substrate because it a hassle for them to clean etc....but you should do things for the benefit of the animal...not yours....why would there be negatives to natural environment enclosures? People are dumb
