Nathan; Over time I have watched several videos on how to make biochar. The best one I found was a man in Florida made in a TLUD. That short for top lit up draft, using wood chips that come from a tree trimmer. I took off on his idea. This is how I do it. Get a 55 gal. drum with removable lid. Drill half inch holes in the bottom. The more the better. Set the barrel up on bricks, 3 or 4. Extending outward so you can grab ahold of. Fill the barrel with sun dried wood chips. I spread mine out in the sun for a few days. Using a piece of 6 inch duct pipe as a guide draw a circle in the center of the lid. Using a right angle grinder make several cuts across the circle not going past your circle guide. Bend all the ears up slightly past 90 degrees. Fit the duct pipe, at least 2 ft long, over the ears. Screw the pipe to the ears if it wants to fall off. Using straw, or dry leaves or dry grass on top of chips, lite on fire. Place 2 pieces of 1 in. angle iron on top of barrel and place the lid with pipe on angle iron. Stand back and let it burn. After about an hour when you start to see a red glow coming from the holes in the bottom of the barrel the char is done, Now you have to stop the burn. If you have another lid, remove the lid and pipe and cover the top. Using something to push the barrel sideways remove the bricks setting the barrel on the ground. Cutting off air to the char. Let it cool for 24 hours. Remember the barrel is HOT. If you don't have another lid you can use a water hose. Remember the char is burning and the steam can burn you. It takes more water than you would think to cool it off. and stop the burn. Dump the barrel out and hose down again. Now how does it work. Air goes in the bottom supporting the fire at the top. As it burns down the barrel the oxygen is used up and the char won't burn. The gap between the top of barrel and the lid allows air to enter and burn off the gasses that come off the chips. The pipe creates a draft. Wind hinders the air flow. I also found that if the chips have a lot of fines in it the air flow up through the chips is hindered. I'll use half inch hardware to screen out. I know this was long but the chips makes good char that doesn't have to be broken down further. Good luck. And remember you are playing with fire. Also to "charge" the char before adding to garden or growing beds. Hope I helped.
