"You take the high reps and I'll take the low rep. But I'll be a champion before you" - Doug Hepburn. This man was a great example of strength only overshadowed because of the presence of Paul Anderson around the same time. I remember hearing a quote from Bill Pearl who claimed to watch him climb up ladders on his bare hands at around 300Lbs in weight!?! Legend!

This is great!! Regarding hand-balancing, Paul Anderson utilized handstand push-ups against a wall. He placed his hands on blocks to increase the range of motion, and created a belt to prevent himself from falling forward, away from the wall, should he lose his position. Hepburn, Anderson and others stressed focusing upon a goal and finding a way to obtain it. Neither Hepburn, nor Anderson, was an optimally healthy and fit child. What they desired was great strength and size. Would you say that these men were Champions? I say that they were indeed, and remain Heroes regardless of having departed!! There are people who follow trends, not knowing why. And there are those who forge paths, fully knowing why. Great content and inspiration!!

I am using his workout A program, I increased my squat from 150kg to 165kg and can do that for 8 sets of 2-3 reps in 4 months. Bench press has increased by 10kg to 120KG as well, but in comparison to the squat the progress is slow, so I will use higher reps for a short period to increase the conditioning on the bench press, while definitely not skipping the low rep scheme. This is one of the best workout schemes I have used, only downside, is it is quite slow, but after having a break due to holiday or sickness the strength almost stays the same due to the body's conditioning to the heavy weight. Going to stick to this and see how far I go.

He was a pioneer for sure. My intuition after having started working out in the early 1980’s , is that there is no “one size fits all” workout or style of working out. My theory is that a lot of importance comes from your inborn ratio of fast twitch muscle fibres vs slow twitch muscle fibres. I’ve always been a quick twitch kind of person who struggles with long term endurance. This has resulted in me always being able to build muscle as long as nutrition is taken care of. I got up to my heaviest while eating every 3 hours, but felt terrible most of the time. And even food you like gets to be a chore to put down when you’re eating so often. Bloody expensive in today’s world as well unfortunately.

I do a lot of similar training- increase sets of 3, high volume low reps, works really good for shoulders and bicep/tricep strength as well

I started back on the Hepburn A program recently and doing the version he advised when he was older and not adding the pump workout with it. Interesting side note but story goes Bill Starr was originally influenced by Hepburn’s approach, combining the 5×1 and 5×5 workouts. I think its in his book. Thanks for the video.

i once gained a lot of strength very fast when i was trying something crazy like 30 sets of 2 reps with a very heavy weight (or even more sets), 1min rest between sets, but i stopped doing it because i thought that to gain muscle i had to train with higher reps like everyone else, maybe i should go back to training like that, my bench max went up 20kg in 1 or 2 weeks

@dontreadmyname4396

@@GoldenEraBookworm i also tried it with squats once, like i was doing sets of 5 reps very explosive and fast each 1min, and i wouldn't stop doing sets until i started struggling to do the 5 reps in a fast pace, could end up doing 35 or 50 sets in total (until i had grinding reps once i saw grinding reps i stopped doing sets), my squat went from 140kg to 180kg in 2-3 weeks or so, i also stopped doing that because i went back to training with high reps bodybuilding style

Interesting video, thanks. I have two questions: (1) How many days per week did Hepburn train? Especially, how many of his intense 30-set days? (2) Which days did he consider most important for "forced eating"? For example, if he only trained intensely on three days per week, on which days of the week was it most critical to do forced eating? Before an intense training day? Or after?
