He was often briefly just called Philippe II. D'Orléans, was the titular duke of Chartres from 1674 until 170 and after the death of his father in 1701 he became the Duke of Orléans, Valois, Nemours and Montpensier, Prince of Joinville, Count of Beaujolais and multiple peers of France. He belonged to the Bourbon line of the House of Orléans founded by his father. From 1715 to 1723 he was regent of France on behalf of the still underage Louis XV.

The twenty five years 1715-1740 were the best years of the eighteenth century for the French people, with peace, stability and prosperity. This was thanks to Philippe d'Orléans and his successor the Cardinal de Fleury. The Enlightenment came to fruition, while the Rococo style followed the Baroque, Watteau in many ways sums up the Regency era. Thank you for another enjoyable video.

Agree, Fleury was a steady hand too and did well overcoming challenges like the Jansensist uprising. I like to say that while there were upheavals and misery in 18 century France, there was a lot that went right also, making France a powerhouse in science, literature, art, trade. And, Watteaus painting, magnificent.

I think I have read somewhere that Philippe bought an expensive diamond just after he came to regency which Louis XIV had refused earlier. I think the diamond was placed on Louis XV 's crown. Yes Louis XV didn't rule himself and let his mistresses and prime ministers take control of the Kingdom which led to downfall. But Louis XIV on the other hand did not have prime ministers at all.

Can anyone suggest great movies for me that focus on the Bourbon kings of France. I just watched Versailles on Netflix and Reign the CW series where I learnt that originally the family hailed from Navarre. I find the French monarchs /dynasties greatly under appreciated and would like to watch films or series based on even earlier dynasties like the Valois, Capetians(longest ruling dynasty), Carolingian & Merovingian (1st dynasty that arose from the fall of Rome).

( english subtitles, free, on youtube. ) - all can say is after watching it, I can see how he got his moniker. // Yes, I watched Versailles, and loved it too. Id love to know the name of the chamber music they play at the start of each show. It gives me goosebumps!! What an experience it would have been to sip champagne at one of Louis garden parties on the lawns of Versaille.

The contrast between the absolutist Louis IV and his nephew is stark, however for a good deal of Louis IV's life, their sexual morals were the same. I prefer Louis, who did not hide a work of atheism within a prayer book. Though sadly for me as a Reformed Christian, he did institute the Edict of Fontainebleau.
