Man i feel you on the stalemate of the meta in mtg, its become so dried out to me and the grind in ranked just feels god awful rn. Your channel really bridges the gap between competitive and free play, and its easy watching you play fun, budget friendly and non meta breaking decks. And even when you do play jank, its unique and not copy and pasted like alot of other content creators. Great video as usual 😎👌

Joey, I found out today that Bronzehide Lion is super fun and interesting in the abzan mutate deck! Turns out, that if you mutate any number of creatures onto it, once it dies, its trigger will bring back ALL OF THE MUTATED CREATURES back to the battlefield attached to another creature! The mutate stack... LIVES ON! Cheers from Poland! ;)

I think you mentioned something I have truly started taking to heart. It's not worth stressing over ranked anymore. I get to gold, and then just play for fun with silly decks. I'm having so much fun with silly Red/black discard or menace decks where games are actually interesting and not just "Oh they have doom of the depths... Can't wait for that Nissa, agent combo!"

@@deashawnthurmond3329 Control decks ARE stupid though. There's nothing even remotely interesting to them. You just stop the opponent from playing the game unless they're also control or burn. You only play control if you just want to win or to lose friends, as far as I'm concerned.

@@deashawnthurmond3329 It's funny to see control players that think they're being smart, too. It's just as brainless a deck as burn since all you have to do is not let your opponent resolve or keep anything useful. And if you're the one playing control it gets boring as all hell.

I play control and don't necessarily lose any less than with other decks... because you can only counter so much before your deck loses steam... then you make compromises to compensate... It's a vicious circle. It also keeps the other player on his toes. Annoying to play control? Yup... but at least you're interacting with the other player. The absolute worst for me is the cat/oven combo... it's literally made the game so much worse. The cycling deck also reeks of this type of unilateral gameplay.

@@ryangainey94 In my opinion, as long as you have fun playing the game, that's all that matters! And it's great to try and challenge your own decks to adapt against other decks too! What comes to your opinion on control decks, I have to disagree. Control can be quite a difficult one to play at times and does require thought and anticipation. I can see why it makes people furious with counter spells and such but in the end it forces the other player to also think about when to play certain big cards so they can't just smack them onto the board without a thought process! Edit: A proper thought process then enables a great learning process which ultimately makes you a better player too!

I am not facing alot of the same top meta decks at the moment with my Rakdos Fighty deck for some reason. Ranked up fast from gold to diamond 3. No cards from ikoria, no sacrifice. Fun every game.

Mannnn I can't agree with you more starting from platinum up most of the decks people run are meta zenith flare cycling, gyruda, blue white control, Lurrus,yorion ect. I got this strange jank idea. 3rd turn gyruda: Turn 1: land drop into gilded goose Turn 2: land drop into incubation druid. Tap goose for white Mana. Play Swallowed whole tapping incubation druid and giving it a counter. Turn 3: land then Gyruda? Or something else.... Swallowed whole has some interesting potential as a Mana ramp and removal.

Only if your Gyruda is not a companion. You can only have cards with Even mana cost as a companion.

The spider has synergy with incubation druid. When you mutate on incubation druid you can get crazy Mana ramp. Similar to Vivien using the plus to put counters on incubation druid.

12:45 You don't say... Last night I've almost smashed my desk after falling into gold 4. tier. I was using Winota together with Krenko and Luminous Broodmoth (plus Agent of course...). I've lost almost against all kinds of deck (cycle, sacrafice, flash). WTF with a ranked game...? I have also Divine visitation and Heliod God in my deck and maybe that's why is so difficult to win - it is not so consistent and game algorythm sends against such a deck rank player busters... I think you were right some time ago: as many rare and mythic you use as many you can face against you. So if you are using mainly commons and uncommons ,with slight number of rare, your way to platinium rank will be much easier...

I got three auspicious starrix mutated on top of each other yesterday which let me get the entire deck out turn 6/7. Since it puts lands down and I had a great henge to draw for each creature that entered and allowed more mutations. It seems counter intuitive to stack the starrix but that's how he shines the most.

Anyone else feel like red/white/blue is the king of meta right now? It could be Winota, cycle, or a traditional control but those 3 decks seem like the top ones in platinum+.

Idk if you saw, but around 15:00 you had lethal is you mutated Biolante onto Goose and it would have been 11 in the air he couldnt block

I really like Bark hide Troll in mutate decks. Especially if running other jank line Glowstone Recluse or Essence Symbiote.

Hey Joey, if you want another angle at fun mutate action, I've been playing around with gruul mutate using sarkhan to change planeswalkers into creatures and mutating them. Trust me, it get really wonky on the rules side of mutate. Love the content and the honest thoughts on the current meta, keep up the good work!

Another idea is to include a couple polukranos it's a free grab from yard with nehroi and you can escape if needed

may I suggest Barkhide troll? it solves the same function as a paradise druid, giving a safe target to start your mutate pile and it works great with the green symbyonte that keeps giving him a +1/+1 counter allowing you to keep activate the hexproof ability. I've tried it out and it worked surprislying good for my expectations

I’m running a very similar deck except it leans a lot more on the black side. My main engine is Syr Konrad and I threw in bastion of remembrance. Leyline prowlers for ramp. It’s a bit more jank but soo much fun when it goes off. *edit* Notice me Senpai

I don't know if this would make it better, but maybe a dire bat instead of one of your apex of deaths? It's kinda hard to say since you are limited to just creatures. Since you were in black and if you weren't limited to creatures I would suggest something like Kaya's blessing so you can swing your semi-hexproof Paradise Druid without worry. I have been doing something like that with teferi's time twist to dodge board wipes, removal, or just going wide for more damage. It even better if you mutated more than once since all the creatures in the mutation will return. Though there is the white mutate cat that gives vigilance and you gain 4 life when you mutate.

What do you think about the ilysian caryatid for ramp? Its 1/1 but i find that it tapping for 2 mana once you have bigger creatures comes in handy

MTG, in my opinion, has always been best with a group of friends playing paper cards in person. I can't see any point in trying to master a game that relies so heavily on random chance. No matter how skilled you think you might be, you can only ever play the cards you draw.

I play a deck in rank and it is really competitive and it is not meta at all. I am diamond tier but the reconnects cost me rank. I agree though that you see a lot of black white control, white red cycling, and the same stuff over and over. But if you are beating it than it is funny. The only reason I am not in Mythic already is the stupid reconnect issue...

Completely agreed on meta. Once a meta is in place, the game makers just killed their game due to no more creativity. Basically why The Division is going downhill 2 years ago. I don't play standard but only because I don't want to be bothered having to always adjust my decks. I'll just stick to modern and Commander

Playing ranked is super frustrating. There is very little if any room to brew or experiment. Extremely repetitive gameplay. Facing oppressive decks all the time that snowball so quickly that the game is decided in the first couple turns typically, which doesn't allow for much actual in-game strategy. Either you have the right removal/ counter spell at the right time and you likely win or you don't and you likely lose. All that just to get an extra pack each month doesn't seem worth it to me.

Yo, I'm like you, easily bored about meta decks and try to always create new shits. I can only tell you that when I'm bored I go back in normal games to try some new mechanics. And in ranked if I wanna win against meta, I play hard agressives compositions

Problem with standard play once you get locked into mythic level. Everyone wants to play killer meta decks instead of themed fun decks. The reward does not change at the end of the season. Small egos just need stroking I guess. Want to impress players with your mostly rares and mythic cards go play Brawls. Stupid in Brawls is what it excels at. I know lets have the veteran and deep wallet players run off the new and casual players. Demise of every F2P game is veteran and P2W players needing compensate for their small gifts of nature. Other great fail of Arena. Is the ability of getting past set cards. Getting hammered constantly by cards I have no way of earning is uber fun. Any F2P that wants you to spend loads of money for pixels to play catch up is a no go for me. MTG lost the core roots that made the game great. CCG. The online version of MTG just needs to stick to selling bling and let us at least grind and earn cards. Make collecting 4 each cards of a set mean something with some unique bling reward.

This guy is playing platinum rank and only meets stupid players.... I play unranked and silver and is only huge decks. And you tell me the game is not all rigged. My problem with rank is that when I start winning a lot of games suddenly I start receiving unplayable hands, no right lands, or no lands at all, or the opponents get all the right cards and in 3 turns already won the matches.... Every time I get to gold 1, one or two wins to platinum I start to lose all games, even if I use the same deck in unranked and keep winning, in the ladder, I am pushed to gold 2 or 3 in a blink.

wise words. I went the same route as you: Ranked to platinum with a funky Jeskai Yorion (not the main version, a spicy more aggressive version) and then stopped and build a janky ass Sultai ReaniMutator (with Nethroi as well, what are the chances) and have some fun. Also that deck can run Eerie Ultimatum as well for Ultimate recursion (eheh, get it?)
