Initially I was not too happy about the Bara Manga story, cuz we didn't have any of the characters that we had grown to love and this was a new place. But over the years, I've grown to appreciate it more.
I loved the story for 2009, the sets were vibrant and the vehicles were just plain sweet. Man, I wish we could go back and see what else they could’ve made!
Too bad for you, a lot of the fans didn't like it, including me. I didn't understand why they were switching away from the Matoran Universe just when Makuta seemed to have won!

What do you mean "even bigger than an exo planet"? Exoplanets exist in every possible planetsize, because exo just means outside of our solar system. Also, spherus magna was most likely not bigger than any regular star we know of. Our sun is a yellow dwarf star, meaning it is really small compared to other stars. Planets on the other hand are even smaller. The suns diameter is 150x that of earth. No planet ever comes even close to the smallest stars

Tbf, if it would've been the size of a star, it would've just turned into one, due to the sheer mass of it collapsing onto itself. Though, the Energised protodermis might've stabilized it. Thus, when it was harvested, the Shattering happened
Man, the amount of backstory and events that were written for Bara Magna seem like they are desperately trying to rival that of the backstory of the Matoran Universe. But all of it was squeezed into just one year, compared to the previous nine which were spent developing the Matoran Universe. I will never understand what in the world LEGO was thinking when they attempted a soft-reboot at such a large scale for Bionicle when everyone working on it were well aware of the inevitable incoming cancellation in less than a year. Hero Factory was probably already in development during that time, so why bother to create so much world building and backstory when you are well aware that you're not going to use them that much? On the positive side though, all the 2009 sets were amazing. If we're talking purely set-wise, 2009 probably has to be my absolute favorite Bionicle year.
Oh yeah, it’s such a baffling move and honestly I wish they just refactored the Glatorian designs into MU characters to make it more cohesive with the ending of Bionicle - an odd choice to do a soft reboot and end the theme immediately
afaik the bara magna storyline was planned to go on for three years originally, but was cut short due to bionicle no longer being profitable enough for lego. it would've worked a lot better if there were two more years worth of sets and story material, but honestly they did pretty good with what they could work with imo.
I was never as invested in the Bara Magna part as I was in anything happening inside the Matoran Universe but its nice to refresh some of the knowledge I had about that and learn a bit more about it. One thing I will never understand or agree with is the change from the Element of Air to ""Jungle"", which is not an element at all. It would have made some sort of sense (still little to none) in Mata Nui when amongst Firs, Water or Earth but in a desert planet as Bara Magna it stands out badly. Also, why the heck is Malum sporting a Cordak blaster at 15:24?? Lol
I guess Jungle is the non-matoran universes version of Plant Life? Although I do agree that it does look a bit odd in a desert. That said the same goes for water in that setting. Possibly from before spherus magna split into three and they just stayed as jungle despite the distinct lack of much. Gresh getting the power of air though is also dumb given he is of the jungle tribe. I do quite like the 2009 story though. It's when I was first introduced into bionicle so might just be nostalgia speaking but I like most of what happens

Not to mention when it was explained that "Sand" was its own element (with an Element Lord, no less)... when the canon was already a bit weird with how it separated Rock and Earth.
@DuckBricks I’ve been loving this it’s amazing. Been a bionicle fan since it came out in 2001, I was 6 years old. Also is it to late to pre order for the bionicle set?

I really think that lego should bring it back after 20 years, fans are still making it look amazing and I only hope that in time lego will bring unity, duty, and destiny back to us. Also I would love to have a mask collection like yours. Anyway I can get one please let me know.

Great video I know that you’re not focusing on the dynamics between the characters as much but I’m surprised you didn’t at least mention the love subplot between Mata Nui and Kiina or does that only come up next chapter Also I don’t want to seem impatient but just want to know. Am I to assume that we will get more clarification on Tuyet in chapter 10 or the prologue. Sorry if that seems pushy but you just really hooked me in chapter 7 by teasing that there’s something more to her entire situation.
Don’t worry! More on Tuyet is coming next chapter! And yeah, I think the love subplot for Kiina will be briefly touched on next chapter as well, but honestly it didn’t really affect the story all too much, especially as Mata Nui physically could not reciprocate
The Ignika bestows the elements, Mata Nui didn’t decide on which ones they’d be. Also, it did it based on the fact that Glatorian will one day naturally evolve to have natural elemental powers. Down their evolutionary line. :)
There's a point that really bothers me tho, it's that the mask of life made mata nui's body out of sand, even tho Mata Nui says later that the mask of life can only influence things that are or have been living (when talking about repairing the weapons of his friends and how those were mostly made of bones and stuff). When i was watching the movie, i always assumed that it was made of the corpses of the insects that had approached and got annihilated by the big blast of energy the mask of life produced, but every source says that the mask of light somehow made mata nui a body out of sand, so it confuses me a lot.
I guess the justification could be that there were particles in the sand of long-dead organic life forms or material? Otherwise yeah, it’s a little strange
why the HECK did they discontinue bionicle right here. That was the most idiotic move to cancel the series right at the climax. Like JUST FINISH IT OUT. But they’re like, nah, we’re moving on to bigger and better things… Sorry, nothing lego could come up with could ever be bigger and better than this story.
A lot of people have been throwing around the idea of a BIONICLE TV show. If they do that, I hope they expand the Bara/Bota Magna arc to be a bit more in depth. Replace the Valley of the Maze comic with the original 2010 movie script, and make a season or two of Mata and crew on Bota Magna with the biomechanical dinosaurs. Would give all the '09 worldbuilding a bit more weight.
And we finally reach where I joined the fandom (I had a couple Phantoka sets but didn't get into the story) :) Sad I missed all the build-up to the Glatorian stuff but honestly it was so amazing as a kid to slowly discover all the lore and history
Time to express my opinions on 2009, and trust me, im going to rip this year into shreds. This year has unexpectedly turned away from the MU and went to Bara Magna, and it was very abrupt to me. Seriously, you have a dark lord having overthrown god himself and everyone has to team up to stop him, and you instead abruptly switch to another world with a bunch of strangers we have no connection with? I think LEGO shouldve made sets for Reign of Shadows and Bara Magna at the same time. I mean the Ninjago Movie sets were released at the same time as Hands of Time sets, so why cant Bara Magna and Reign of Shadows sets coexist? And now for the story. The Skrall have an interesting motivation, Bara Magna is a new, sad world, and we have new characters. Mata Nui as the main character was very interesting. But then we have T he Legend Reborn, which has a light-hearted tone that is complete opposite of the dark tone of the rest of 09 and its post-apocalyptic desert world. And also, half of the sets are missing in the movie. Where is Gelu? Where is Tarduk? Where are the Zesk? Where is Malum? They are all absent. What they shouldve done is make the first half of 09 a flashback. Start the year with the Ignika crashing down, and then we get a cutaway to the events before TLR like the Fall of Atero. And then after that, we shift back to the present aka 09 second half aka TLR. By the way i forgot to mention that Riddle of the Great Beings is a garbage-tier serial. It shouldve led into the original 2010 story if Bonkle wasnt cancelled. But anyway, what they should've done with TLR is have Mata Nui start out arrogant and act like a god, but then learn from Ackar, Kiina, Gresh, etc. and become more like a person. And also, Gelu shouldve been given ice powers by Mata Nui.and probably shouldve been a part of the main cast. Skopio XV-1 should've been just a normal Skopio creature earned by Telluris (by the way correction Telluris is a Glatorian not an Agori) and heavily, and i mean heavily, modified into a tank scorpion, and he should've appeared in TLR rather than a normal Skopio appearing and Telluris squished into the beast's model. All vehicles and their riders should've appeared. Perditus shouldve mattered (his Reviving Bionicle counterpart was much better). Stronius, Fero and Atakus shouldve actually been characters in the movie (Skrall shouldve also been actual people in it rather than humanoid monsters which is not canon-friendly). Tuma shouldve been defeated in a much better way. Malum shouldve appeared. Strakk was wasted potential and deserved more. Tarduk needed to appear. Zesk needed to appear. Vorox needed more screentime. And finally, they shouldve done something with Titan Mata Nui. Either have it so that the Ignika during Mata Nui's fight with Tuma gave him a SuperSayian form aka Titan Mata Nui and he defeated Tuma after which he went back to his regular form, or just dont make that set at all and distribute the gold Ignika with regular Mata Nui. That will fix 09 a lot. And also, movies 5 and 6 shouldn't have been canned. Heres what i think wouldve happened. Before movie 5, Berix was injured and Gresh had to escort him out, leaving Mata Nui, Ackar and Kiina to enter the maze. They get new allies in the form of a good Skrall, three new Glatorian, a Water Tribe Agori thats either a new character or one of the two Kaxium V3 drivers (Scodonius or Kirbraz), and also Tarduk, plus the main protagonist of My LEGO Network Bionicle Campaign (who we know to be a ire Tribe Agori, by the way that game shouldve been instead Bara Magna Online Game). But they also encounter new enemies, including more Skrall and Bone Hunters led by a new Bone Hunter character and Atakus, Metus in his serpent form, the Sisters of the Skrall, the Baterra, Agori-sized creatures inhabiting the maze and resembling the Zesk, being rogue Zesk, and the main threat: the Element Lords, who are revealed to have the villages named after them, for example, the village of Vulcanus is named after the Fire Element Lord. For wave 1, we have the protagonist of My LEGO Network Bionicle campaign, whoever the Water Agori is going to be, a new version of Tarduk, the Maze Zesk, a new version of Atakus, and serpent Metus as small sets. The canister sets will be redesigned Ackar, Kiina and Mata Nui, and also three new Glatorian: the Jungle Glatorian Oris, the Iron Glatorian Tera, and the Ice Glatorian Likus, which by the way were actually in the script treatment for the fifth film. The Baterra set and a Skrall sister set will also be a bonus canister set. The titan setwill be the new Bone Hunter character with his enhanced Rock Steed. For wave 2, the canister sets will be the Element Lords minus the Element Lord of Rock who is named Roxtus in my headcanon, and the black set will be instead the good Skrall. Roxtus aka the Rock Element Lord will be a titan set because he was a leader-class Skrall, which are titan-sized, while the others were originally Glatorian, which are canister-sized. Alongside the Rock EL, other titans will include a rearmored Tuma, the leader of the Skrall Sisters, a titan Baterra guarding the maze built by the Great Beings for that purpose rather than the same purpose as the regular Baterra, and is one of a kind in-story, and also a Glatorian vehicle through which Mata Nui and co. ended up on Bota Magna by being launched up into space and onto Bota Magna. Speaking of which, 2011 in my opinion should be split into two separate stories: wave 1 is the Bota Magna storyline where Mata Nui and co. have to survive Bota Magna's biomechanical dinosaurs. Wave 2 is the 2010 we got, but better. We get remakes of classic sets, all six Toa Nuva, the five Toa Mahri + Takanuva, and also the giant GSR and Prototype Robot sets. I will expand on it when the next episode comes out.
Oh yeah, I agree with a ton of these points and honestly found the vast majority of 2009’s story to be really uninteresting - I’m going to be putting out a review series once I wrap up this retelling, and have a ton of thoughts to share there
These snooty Bionicles will be in big trouble when Slizer's Mechashingodzilla awakens below the Slizer Dome on the Slizer planet. Possibly the big Bionicle titans created by the artists on Instagram can resist him. 😄😆 The new pictures of him will soon be taken by the way. 👑
