I fell asleep with a playlist of 'Search for the worst' left on my phone. I woke up at 4 am to the sound of "TAKUUUUAAAAAAAAA"

To be honest bionicle lore is quite incredible

Yeah, yeah, we all noticed how Tolkien ripped off Bionicle: Mask of Light, no need to remind us of it again

No jokes the only time I saw the piraka advert I was sick at home with a fever and I genuinely believed it was some sort of fever dream I had, until I watched this.

this was the shit back when I was 5.

I had this playing in the background as ambiance as I was playing fallout 4, and out of no where fucking "TAKUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"(2:18) plays loud as fucking hell, and I literally fell back in my chair smashing my head on the ground. I now have a head ache.

Nitpick: the two following Bionicle movies were actually prequels.

Man, the mix of technology in a natural setting was the entire charm.

Honestly though, the full story of bionicle is super dark

i actually just remember trying to read all of the backstory in this universe from the wiki. its universe is sooo fucking huge and flushed out for some reason. for a toy line that had like 4 mediocre movies its story and universe are wayyyy to well established, heck some game franchises arent even this well established.

The voice of the yellow one (Jaller) was REALLY inconsistent with his character, since in-story he’s this tough, skilled military leader with years of experience. Then here they just gave him an obnoxious, childish voice because... he’s short. That said, as flawed as this movie is, I still have a soft spot for it. It might not be great, but it’s still cute.

Doesn't writing a character who sacrifices his life to save another's, and then writing a scene where he is revived kind of remove the whole weight of the sacrifice?

Thank you for not completely ruining one of my favorite movies as a kid. It is easy to tell as an adult how bad it is now but, I loved this as a kid.

When I first watched this I completely missed the whole Takua-finding-the-mask thing and genuinely thought Jaller was the Chosen One like all the other characters, so the twist was mind-blowing for me... Broken foreshadowing.

A thing I wonder that critics in general ought to consider when reviewing adventure movies is the fact that this story mold is *millennia* old. The tale of the hero is an archaic archetype that lies at the core of any hero story. For example, LotR and Star Wars are both pretty quintessential hero stories but in different settings. Necessarily any story focused on developing a primary hero will have many similarities because that is just how the narrative works. As an anthropologist, we don't often speak in generals or make too wide of a conclusion. But the archetypal story of "the hero" is one of the few things found in pretty much every culture. The only thing that makes this archetype interesting is the setting, and bionicle has an amazing setting.

honestly, the peak of the entire series was the mata mui online game, a point and click web based adventure game thing. It felt the most interesting, a lot of mystery and mysticism and the allure of the unknown and unexplained, a world of magic and not technology. Later series removed all the mystery and made it heavily sci-fi and good lord did it suffer for it

The environments aren't supposed to be made of bionicle lol, in canon they're like robot life forms, the environment is just a regular environment

I think the main reason why Bionicle suffers is because it takes the wrong medium. The story is great, well developed and captivating, but there's just one problem with that: it needs to sell toys. The most popular demographic for Bionicle is the 7-12 age range, and when they get thrown into the middle of an ongoing story like Bionicle was, they get confused and it forces them to do their homework on the series if they truly want to enjoy it. If we ever do see another Bionicle reboot (which is even more unlikely now), I would like it to take the form of an animated series, comic (IDW would be nice), or hell, maybe even a theatrical movie series. For something so story-driven as Bionicle, its focus would need to be on that instead of basing it on a LEGO set. Plus, kids don't know what it is anymore, so it's hard to sell to the most broad and prioritized audience, which is toxic. Sad but true...

8:18 The toa don't lose in every single scene. At one point Kopaka freezes three Rahkshi at the same time and in Onu-Koro Onua and Pohatu bury them under a layer of rock when Takua escapes.

according to the bionicle expanded universe (yes, that is a thing) bionicles are not actually robots, though to be fair they are mostly mechanical, but are said to be organic to some extent.

I mean, if sentient robots existed on Earth then, for the most part, Earth would still be earth and if they made castles it wouldn't necessarily be made of steel walls, the civilization started from the ground up as sentient robots. Besides, they are more like "possessed suits of armor" rather than super functional AI. And it's not like our buildings and environment are all made of flesh or mammalian like organisms. I just find your distress at the concept unnecessary. I do see the visual clash, but that clash exists today in our world. I get that stereotypes are annoying, but all the characters are vastly different in style/voice which is reason to be annoyed due to the way cultures and teaching works. However, I see nothing wrong with being a stereotype "American". I've heard people speak that way in person, and it is also partly due to culture and learning. In the same way that people still have intonations in their voice and some patterns that resonate with people from the 1950s; John Mulaney, for example. "Red Bionicle" that lava surfs, his mask as a toy, has rubber on the top of the plastic. It would not flap in the wind like that, though. These are my only complaints really.

The fact that there was never a Toa Mahri/Barraki film is an actual crime. It was my favorite Bionicle era. It had the best commercials, great toys, and an interesting story with genuine tear jerking bits. Hell, I might still have the books associated with this era around somewhere.

The best part about this is that you refer to their masks as their actual faces. They are, for the most part, just masks, and are entirely detachable.

Can you review the the second Bionicle movie, Legends of Metru Nui? I personally think it has a stronger plot than the Mask of Light, and better characters and character arcs as well. Also, death is not meaningless in Legends of Metru Nui, as you so rightfully pointed out that it is in Mask of Light. I know that this series aims to review bad movies, but I just thought I would recommend Legends of Metru Nui to you, as I think it is rather good (for a Bionicle movie) :-)

This has been rated as one of the worst?....I know it's not that good, but still....

wellt hat's how the environments in bionicle were though. the idea was it was these robot things in a more tribal setting. initially anyway. as the toyline went on it embraced the more futuristic side of the franchise. but the environments int he movie are pretty true to what the idea was initially. it's partially why bionicle was so interesting int he first place. like "what's the deal with these bionicle things? why are they all on an island? why's there magic and stuff? Why's it feel like there used to be something bigger here and everything's just kinda lost now?" (not this movie though. the movie's kinda ..yeah... kinda generic compared to the rest of the franchise) all they needed to do was make cool robot toys for the little kiddies to buy, but they went balls deep and made a bigass story and world that spanned different media. infact it WAS the story that actually hampered bionicle. by the end of the franchise's lifespan, the story got so complicated newcomers were turned off, and by proxy didn't give a shit about the toys. and after a mostly failed attempted at a pseudo reboot in their second to last line, they just kinda released an anniversay setline and ended it. y'know until they brought it back again, but barely marketed it and it died a second time.
