As the breeding season progresses I continue to add more pairs to the outdoor aviary every week. This week the owl finches are introduced and in a matter of days they begin to build their nest.

Thankyou, and yes i will make a video showing how I put the fake christmas tree branches. Most of the birds really love to make their nest in there.

My 22 day old owl finch has a clicking sounds while breathing, one of its siblings died of it. I did treat them with Scatt for air sac mite but it doesn’t really seem to be it. Should be some sort of respiratory disease. What else can I give them in this urgent time? Antibiotics?
@paradiseaviary
@paradiseaviary 4 года назад
Be very carefull with scatt it should never be given to young birds. Sounds like he might have an upper respiratory infection ive had this happen before with chicks that are handfed. I give them a 4in1 full spectrum antibiotic. What antibiotic do you have available ?
@saeedyan6509
@saeedyan6509 4 года назад
Paradise Aviary I bought Tetratex Broad Spectrum Antibiotic from morning bird
@paradiseaviary
@paradiseaviary 4 года назад
That shoulf help with the upper respiratory infection. Add one level teaspoon (5ml) of TETRATEX to 8 fl. oz. (236 ml) of clean distilled drinking water then use that water to make the hand feeding formula for the chick.

Everywhere says that owl finches’ incubation period is 12 days. Mine laid 5 eggs may 31st. She started incubating them after third one. So today one of them were supposed to hatch. I already candled all of them and all were fertile the other day. Somewhere I read that you shouldn’t be turning or touching an egg 24-48 hours before hatching since the chick is moving and rotating inside the egg to hatching position. Should I be worried? Should I check? Is it possible the eggs hatch more than 12 days?
@paradiseaviary
@paradiseaviary 4 года назад
Yes be patient most finch eggs will hatch 13-14 days after incubation start. Sometimes its very hard to see exactly when the finches start to incubate so we could be 1 day off or so. They should hatch by tomorrow or the next day if all were fertile. Try you best to not check and give them space so they dont toss once they hatch.

Paradise Aviary omg was so stressed. Came to see three of them hatched. They’re adorable. Thank you for all the amazing info. I took one of them to hand feed ( after a day) and as your recommendation I wanna keep the baby wipe warmer at 95 but it’s a little colder and if I close the lid or almost close it then the humidity will rise. Lol it’s a whole lot of work. Hopefully it will surive.
@paradiseaviary
@paradiseaviary 4 года назад
So glad they hatched. You can also take the baby once its about a 1week old or a week and a half by then irs a bit more feathered and easier to handfeed, you also dont have to worry about the temp as much because by this time they have a few feathers coming out. The baby wipe warmer is a great tool but has to be used right just play with it a bit till you get the right temp and humidity inside. Wish you the best !

Paradise Aviary thank you very much, words are fruitless to say how much your channel had helped me realize some of my desires to care for finches. You’re very generous and patient with your subscribers. Much appreciated bro. One last question, now they are 11 days old and almost 1\3rd feathered and until how long do I need to keep them in the incubator? It says in your other video till they are 15 days old. Is that true? Does it apply to owl finches as well? Because at 11 days old even when I bring them out of incubator to feed them they kinda shiver from cold it’s like 74 degrees outside lol

Thankyou for you kind words it makes me extremely happy to know that ive been able to help you and other in this beautiful hobby. Some species take a few days longer to feather up than others theres no set day exactly to remove them from the brooder, but usually by day 15-20 the chicks will be almost completely feathered and this is when I pull them out. You can also wait until they deside to fledge for themselves and that is a sure sign they are ready to be out of the "nest/brooder" without the need for heat. Keep inmind that owls like to return to a nest at night to roost so once the chicks fledge the brooder i would make sure to offer a nest of some sort so they can roost at night.
