The variety of ways you can set up a bird feeder station is countless. Here are several examples of how our customers have set up theirs.
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. I used my kid's, old wooden swing set. I hang feeders on the big chains, and the overhead beam. It's worked perfect.

And a very sturdy structure for sure.

the pole set-up at about 10:33 looks like a grooming table double arm, a.k.a: LIPS system! It's giving me ideas for what I can use my spare double arm for!

The idea of packing feeders in one small area is a limited move. To draw more variety it is best to spread some feeders out to allow birds that do not handle high traffic well. I agree completely that the ground feeding birds are often overlooked. The woman who built the brush pile for cover is on the ball. A very good move on your part to open up creating good conditions to provide the most enjoyable bird feeding. I have to laugh about squirrel's ....over the years I have learned to provide situations that are suited just for the squirrel and lead them away from the bird feeders for the most part. The squirrel can provide enjoyable viewing just like the birds.

Could I just pick your brain Mark? I chose your channel to subscribe because, well you seem very knowledgable. I have an old patio umbrella (wooden) that is is relatively good condition. I also have an inclosed deck/greenhouse with walls of windows. I would like to create a STURDY feeding station using the old umbrella with the canvas top and wooden stays before the snow flies on the 20th of this month (October 2023) So, bottom line is I have only 16 days to figure how to reach my goal. It has to be strong enough to endure winter winds, (we are in the northwoods of Wisconsin). And also because I would like to keep the umbrella open to provide shelter for the many birds that visit our feeders. None of our neighbors have bird feeders so we are the one stop place both in summer and winter. As you can imagine winter is hard up here - food and shelter from the snow and wind is so important for our friends. Would you please share your in[ut, ideas and anything that can help me realize my goal in just a couple of weeks please? "My" birds depend on it. Last winter was tough on them. Thank you in advance for any words of advice!

Welcome to the channel. I can only imagine how tough your winters are up there. I do know a thing or two about wind though and being able to keep the umbrella functioning around here would be nearly impossible. It depends heavily on how sturdy the wooden pole is and its ability to attach screw-in arms to it to make a "feeder tree". There are great hoods that fit many tube feeders that help tremendously with snow. shopbackyardbirdcenter.com/collections/hoods as examples. Thank you for your dedication to your birds.

Great discussion. What do you recommend for areas where you can't get 8-10 ft away from jumping surfaces. Baffles are simply ineffective if a squirrel can jump horizontally or drop from a tree, climb a roof, hang/drop from eves or climb siding. Electric fences have been my only option but looking for options.

I would recommend a combination of squirrel proof feeders, safflower in open trays and Nyjer in your finch feeders. Here is a link to my video on battling squirrels: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-buzTVlfari4.html

Today was the first day I fed 3 squirrels! They are meal worms and sunflower seeds. I did say howdy twice. The neighborhood cats come by too often!

You can buy spicy seed or buy a "sauce" to coat your own seed. Doesn't bother the birds at all, but keeps mammals away. I've used it (the coat your own sauce) with great success! Just make sure you're wearing gloves... Cause it works on people, too! 🥵🔥

What should I place under my feeders for easy clean up?
@MarksBackyardBirds
@MarksBackyardBirds Месяц назад
That's a tough one. Believe it or not, I have found bare dirt to be the easiest to deal with. I can rake up the hulls a few times a year and mow any weeds that to survive.

Sorry for my ignorant question but what is the purpose of the crossbar? Thanks!
@MarksBackyardBirds
@MarksBackyardBirds Год назад
I'm sorry I missed this, the crossbar helps stabilize the structure and it is a great way to mount the flythru feeder.

If you're going to do a video presentation using a second screen, please just zoom in on the screen. I'm sure there was lots of good information in the pictures, but its impossible to see ANY detail.

I couldn’t see the screen well enough at all which was too bad and made this video visually useless. The screen was small-in respect to the entire shot it was much less than even half the screen. Then many of the pictures on the screen were about 1/3 of that…. I don’t understand why you would do this. We didn’t need to see you but what you’re showing us with your voice. 👎🏼
