I demonstrate how to turn a simple two piece bird house Christmas tree ornament. I discuss and show examples of different design considerations. I demonstrate how to turn a miniature bird detail to kick it up a notch.

Good morning Mike. Having coffee while once again watching your instructional videos. You do a great job explaining the details. Later today I want to try one of these little birdhouse ornaments. Question - I notice that you use sanding sealer without wearing any gloves. My shop has limited air flow. So I often wear a vapor mask (besides dust mask). What kind of sanding sealer do you use and is it really safe to wear without gloves or vapor mask?

Thanks 👍 I use Mylands celulose sanding sealer sometimes. The quantity is so minute that getting it on my hands is no concern. Nor the vapors as it drys in seconds. If I was using a spray sanding sealer or finish I would do outside or use a vapor mask. You could omit the sanding sealer and just use a shellac based friction polish.

Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "build a big birdhouse" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my m8 got great results with it.

I am new to wood turning and have tried to make the small bird houses. So far my efforts have been a disaster. But, I plan to persevere and get it right....maybe one of these days. Turning the small pieces has been a challenge to me and not having them break just about the time I finish. Perhaps some day I will have your finesse to turn small pieces.

Just a thought but perhaps just practice your cuts and tool control without the concern of finishing a project.

Mike I was inspired by your miniature bird house I made one. Not as nice of yours but looks good for the tree.

Nice work as always Mike. When you say you have your hook neck scraper ground so that it’s not too aggressive, what is the angle on that?
@MikePeaceWoodturning

+Larry Satchwell I have it ground as a negative rake scraper. I will go into details on a video soon.

Mike do u use cbn wheels and if so what grit...I have a 180 and was wondering if it would be beneficial to go to a 600 grit
@MikePeaceWoodturning

I have an 80 for shaping and a 180 for sharpening. Since I bought mine I know they have started selling a lot of the finer grits. I think a 600 would be as high as I would go but might be a luxury best for skews and chisels. I am thinking 180 is plenty fine for gouges for me.

When you faced off the top of the house and left a dimple for the bit, it looked like you were cutting below center. Was that an optical thing with the angle of the camera?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 6 лет назад
Probably, since I don't stop until I am cutting dead center..
