Finally a good video for outdoor care for a plant. It's so hard to find any plant tubers that even says full sun". It freaking drives me crazy lol. Thank you Joy for this great video, yay. I bought my first bird of paradise s month ago, it's outdoors getting full sun with a little shade in the morning/ early afternoon. My hardiness zone is 9a/ Texas. Everytime I turn around a plant person talks about leaves being burnt, it's overkill

Also, I had not been getting very many flowers until this past summer. I was going to move the plant to get full sun. The roots were too deep so covered it back up. Because of this, I had loosened up the ground all around the plant. A few days later, I saw seven new flowers coming and new I was going to get beautiful flowers.

Thank you very much for this informative video. So much info that’s great. I’m in UK zone 8, but I’ll buy one in a pot and will keep it outside in summer and will take it into the shed in winter. We’ll see what happens.

Nell, I'm a new subscriber and love your videos. I took a trip to L.A. a few years ago and used my rent-a-car to drive up the coast to Santa Barbara and was it nice! We visited the mission and drove out into the countryside. I thought I had died and gone to Heaven! What a nice place to call home! Yeah, you're right about these plants being all over the place and Santa Barbara comes as close as it gets in the states for a perfect climate for them. Here in Lake Charles, LA you'll see them only occasionally in protected locations, as we do get occasional freezes here.They're generally only light(28-32 degrees) and in the middle of the night, in the late winter. I have a Strelizia reginae that's a 3 stalked plant in a pot that is growing on a patio that gets morning to midday sun, but is shaded from the late midday and afternoon sun which is ideal. I've had it about 4 months now and it seems to be enjoying our weather which is quite humid, especially in the summer. I'm hoping for it to bloom, but it looks rather young. Keep up the great videos.

I have a nice healthy one in my front yard here in Sacramento. The only thing I don’t like about it is that the tips of the leaves dry out and turn an ugly brown or gray regardless of how much I do or don’t water it .

Hi I enjoyed your video was very helpful I bought mine at a garden center I live near Woodstock Ontario so it gets quite cold here in the winter but our summers are hot I already transplanted at once into a bigger pot right now it's outside for the summer but it was part shade part sun so I will put it in full sun like your video with saying. It's helpful in a winter that to rotate it I do not do that when it was my first pot.

Hello Nell!! Love your channel!!!! So informative! I garden around where I live and a neighbor has a bird of paradise that to me looks so ratty!! Alot of dead short stems at base that have to be cut to ground level. Also where the flower comes up and it splits I like to cut off the leaves off totally just to the fork where it splits. I hate the way it looks at base so I will be cutting all the dead stuff off bottom. Plus I randomly cut off the leaves as they look so bunched up and I like a open plant which this is not!! Any thoughts on this?? Thanks Nell! Loving all the info!!

Thanks Nell! This video was very spot on and helpful. You had my full attention when you mentioned that the plant takes a couple years to catch on because I, actually, planted mine approximately 5 years ago and I'm just seeing blooms this season. :) I am in the "dry" SoCal Region, where rain has been reduced to a bare minimum. Could you recommend other hearty plants that I use in my flower beds that could withstand the dry climate?
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 8 лет назад
Hi Kimberly - You're so very welcome! I used to live in Santa Barbara so I'm familiar with the climate. Here are some choices for you: succulents, grasses, lavenders, rosemarys, penstemons, salvia, gaillardias, kangaroo paws & coreopsis. All those I've named have many species & varieties to choose from depending on the size, color & bloom times you desire. Happy planting! Nell

This plant is native to my country (South Africa). We call them Strelizias. I have a HUGE one in my garden but will probably move it as its not getting enough sun - the blooms have been rather sparse over the last two years and I think it's because of the overhang of surrounding trees which has put it in too much shade.

Hi, I am in Maryland. I have a potted BOP for 25 years that blooms every January indoors. We move it outside from May to October. Another site says it can tolerate winter temps into the teens and twenties if mulched heavily. What do you think? Will it survive under snow?
@knucklehoagies
@knucklehoagies 6 лет назад
I bought 2 of these and planted them outside in my back patio. The position of the sun throughout the day does give the top half of the plant a decent amount of sunlight but my patio is small and has a wooden divider around it, keeping the bottom half shaded. I live in Sacramento California where it is warm and sunny although might get alittle bit colder compared to Southern California. Do you think it should do fine as is or did I make a mistake planting it outside where I did? It's been about a week and it seems to be doing just fine. No yellowing or wilting of the leaves or anything like that. Tips appreciate! Thanks!

I inherited birds of Paradise with our house. I live in Queensland so it's hot and humid most of the year. So it's always been pretty good. But I think I thought it was less water than it actually needed as my one out the front hasn't bloomed much this year... I think its mostly dead. I know we dehead the old flower and stalk, but what about if knew of the stems are brown?? Cut it back and do a deep water??

I have one planted in my backyard. Some of the flowering turns a gross brown after a few weeks. I have a sprinkler head very close to it, I’m wondering if I’m over watering it, which would be causing the the browning? Or is the browning part of the natural cycle?

Does shortening or lengthening the hours of light in the day cycle promote flowering like (since you are in California) it does for Marijuana? (Ex.) Shortening the hours of full spectrum light with Marijuana forces the flowering activity because it thinks it needs to make babies(seeds)? If so do you know which way and the parameters intensity and preferred spectrum rang

I noticed that the flower stalks sometimes comes out the side of the leaf stalk about 1/3 of the way up it. There is a distinct outer layer that marks where it comes from. Don't know how to better describe it. So wouldn't that mean we cut just above that, just in case a flower stalk is about to pop out?
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 8 лет назад
Hi - I'm not familiar with what you're describing. The BOPs that I've seen all have flower stalks which emerge from the base. I do know that they take pruning really well & can be cut down by at least 1/2. So, you'd be fine cutting just above that point but it does take a little while for them to grow back & flower again. JaimeAstin hey! Sorry to see that no one has commented on your question 😢 Most plants have three focused goals that represent the cycles of their life. The first goal is to root well, The second cycle is when they focus on creating more leaves (foliage) and he third cycle is blooming, to give them an opportunity to make seeds and spread more of its own kind. You technically cut a bloom cycle short (though it probably continued to bloom after you knocked the head off) in such case, if the rest of the plant does not continue to make blooms then it is going to revert back to making bigger roots-and the cycle begins again. I would not be concerned that your plant is going to die- it is just going to cut one of its processes short and it will default to the next one in line, don’t worry 🙌😄

@@jackimoon8284 Aloha Jacki - Young lady, you have distilled this essence of plant growth, for almost every living thing on the planet. And then you summed it up, just in case I wasn't paying attention (but I was!). And a big pat-on-the-back for your kindness to a gardener looking for help. I hope 'Jaime Astin' saw your response. And this is one of the reasons I like gardening so much - seems like every gardener I've met has been very helpful, willing to share plant "secrets", and, like you, go out of their way to be helpful. So mahalo for that. And If every plant book had your synopsis on the Contents page, well, they'd be real short books!
