Bird Photography in Bulgaria: In June 2019 I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the beautiful Bulgarian countryside, photographing a variety of birds. My priority species was the secretive, and difficult to photograph... Golden Oriole. Some photos were from wooden hides whilst others were the result of improvisation, including using the back of a transit van! Despite being a very short trip, the memories will be strong - not just the amazing sightings of bird-life but the rich sounds and tranquil surroundings of this beautiful little patch of Bulgaria. Watch the video to see if I manage to photograph my target bird. A big thank you to Terry for making this video possible and for sharing his passion with me.

Great vid. We live here in Bulgaria, and have chased that Golden Oriole shot, we have been here 7 years and got one, yes one good shot. Yes we hear them, yes we catch a glimpse has they fly past but getting one to sit for a photo is dam near impossible.

I watched this one out of order. Need to go back. Your trips to eastern Europe offer a different setting and opportunities. Glad you got the last image as Golden Oriole. Never thought about using the back of van for a blind/hide. Good idea.

I have really enjoyed Eastern Europe over the last few years. i do think there is a lot of potential.. and lots of room too - less people and in some cases very under-visited by photographers.

Thank you Chris. I really hoped that would come through.. tried to keep it as real as possible. It was a crazy few days, I had just over two days to shoot.. and not much sleep! So to get what I did in that time was pretty amazing. I also saw my first wryneck, black stork and Egyptian culture.

Hi Brigitte. This is a joint venture with the landowner over there. Most of these hides have not been used by any clients yet - so I will be the first to take people here. We have since developed two more hides, including a tower hide reflection pool.
