Todays video is a tutorial about photographing birds down on the coast. Here I share a few of the techniques and practices that I use to help me get the best shots possible of birds that like to play in the surf. Doesn't really matter what gear you use, field craft can play a big role in helping you nail that perfect shot. I also share how I use my OM1 and Olympus 300mm F4 to help me get more keepers.
Thanks for watching. Please leave a comment and if you are new, please consider subscribing!🙏

Great video once again Richard, love the creamy backgrounds and the Little Egret with one of its feet hovering above the water is really nice :) 👍

I always enjoy your videos Richard. I was really surprised in this one to hear how many of the same species you have there that are here in the UK. I don't care much about the audio as it was still understandable and your footage was spot on. Loved the photos at the end too so please don't beat yourself up about the sound. Thanks for another great video!

Thanks so much Stephen for such a nice comment. I woke up this morning and saw that not so many people had watched the video which is quite a common theme recently. Not sure why but the videos are not getting the same traction they were before and was feeling a bit down. Your lovely comment cheered me up so thank you. Yes alot of our winter waders are the same as those in the U.K. Take care😀🙏

Great video Richard considering getting 300mm F4 looks much sharper than my Olympus 100-400 👌

Thank you. I used to love my PL 100-400 which could produce good results.. But the 300mm is definitely considerably better 👍

Thank you Abel. Your technique I also use sometimes, especially if the bird is on the beach. However if the bird is in the water a little off the coast I rather try to approach from the water. Your neoprene gear sounds interesting though. Thanks for the comment😀🙏👍

Dear Richard, thx for this video and the explanation about your shooting-technique! My favourite images are: (1) 13:29 (-> qualified for a poster size print!!!) (2) 13:14 (3) 13:06 I have two questions: (a) What roughly was the distance (in meters) between you and the subject? (b) Did you croped the images? Thanks for your reply! Looking forward for your next videos! Cheers, Marc

Hi Marc and thanks for the great comment. I would say the closest I got was about 5/6 meters up until about 17/18 meters.. Usually somewhere in between. In the video when I am in the water crouching down I am probably about 7 meters from the bird. And yes I nearly always crop. I don't find cropping an issue with the OM1 as some might suggest. Take care👍🙏😀

Great video Richard. I’ll definitely put some of there into practice on the Welsh coast. Is spring the best season for coastal birds? Being mainly a landscape and sometimes street photographer, wildlife is something I need to get better at. I hope you managed to get a new wind shield for your mic
@RichardCookphotography
@RichardCookphotography 7 месяцев назад
Hi Andy and thank you. Coastal birds, at least in Okinawa where I am, are good right through the winter with Spring being particularly good. Haven’t managed to replace the wind shield yet, can’t find any online. Do you have a lens you could use for birds?

@@RichardCookphotography Dji stuff seems really hard to get hold of. I had the same issue with the action 4 batteries. I have a sigma 100-400 and think would be great with my R7

@@AndyHPhotography Yes DJI stuff is really hard to get hold of. The Sigma 100-400 should go really well with the R7. I used to have the Tamron 100-400, and it was a brilliant lens and I think the Sigma would be almost exactly the same. Should be a great combo for some bird photography.

Excellent advice! I use Aperture priority to photograph birds. My question is. . Automatic or manual ISO? If it's manual, in what ranges? A greeting
@RichardCookphotography
@RichardCookphotography 4 месяца назад
Thank you. I am usually on Auto iso on both manual and aperture. My range is usually 200 up to about 8000/10000 depending on the situation but I don’t usually want to go over 1600. 👍🙏💪

@@RichardCookphotography Good afternoon! I'm taking photos in the opening priority mode, with 300 f4 + 1.4X, with ISO 1600, and f5.6, and sometimes a small bird speed up to 10,000 🤯. Do you know why it can be?

@@richardfink7666yes camera gear is so expensive. I don't understand how some lenses cost more than iPhones?
