My work with this lens was featured on social media platforms and magazines, for about 200-300 dollars Canadian you guys cannot go wrong specially if photographing stationary objects or bigger wildlife in zoos but there will be large issue shooting birds in flight if your distant from the subject, or smaller birds, i would suggest the sigma 150-600mm

Using the lens hood is a great way to protect the front element of the lens and it also ensures there is no lens flare which can ruin the results of your images! Good one.

Yes, exactly. And also means you don't need to use a clear filter, which can potentially impair image quality. Thanks for watching. 😊

I'm shooting sea birds with my D7500 and Tokina 18-400mm. I noticed the graininess of my photos and yours as well. Am I seeing noise from high ISO or is that as good as it gets from Nikon? TY.
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, there's always a bit more noise with the APS-C sensors. I can push the ISO on my Z7 much more, but there are also many more noise removal software options these days - I have some videos on DxO, Topaz and Adobe's DeNoise software if you're interested.

D7500 also increases the effective focal length to 450mm. It’s why many wildlife photographers love the D500 and the D7100, D7200, D7500.
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 года назад
Yeah, in a way. Although what you gain in effective focal length, you lose in resolution. For instance, I could take the same shot with my full frame camera, and just crop in to achieve the same image as the crop sensor cameras. I think this can help to encourage tighter framing with the smaller sensors though, precisely because there is less scope to crop the image afterwards. Thanks for watching. 😊
@stevedobbs9427
@stevedobbs9427 3 года назад
@@Robert-Bishop Doesn't work that way Robert. I have a 24mp Crop sensor camera, and you have a 24mp full frame camera. We use the same lens at the same distance from the bird and take our pictures. My 24mp image is tighter on the bird (1.5 times tighter) while your 24mp image is wider, showing more of the habitat. If you crop your picture to match mine you will have a 10mp (approx.) image. You have lost resolution.
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 года назад
Thanks for clarifying Steve. I wasn't clear, but I was meaning my D7500 compared to my Z7 which is 45mp. For me personally, this is the choice I have, because I don't have a 300mm+ lens for my Z7. So I either use the D7500 with the 70-300 or my Z7 with 70-200, but then crop afterwards.

Great video Robert! Be careful with the Queen's swans! Someone told me once it was considered treason to "shoot" a swan up until 1998 because all unmarked mute swans belong to the Queen. Looks like a lovely area you were at. I've never tried bird photography but I definitely should, we have a plethora of really big birds here: storks, hawks, eagles, ibis, pelicans, etc. Some are as big as pterodactyls!! Great shots with the 7500, great camera! Really enjoyed this one. Have a great Sunday mate, stay safe!

Really nice shots. I'm impressed by how the DX version of that lens performed. I got the FX version for my D7500 (largely for ergonomic and robustness reasons, and because I wanted the option to move to full-frame at some point). Personally, I use AF-C for most purposes plus the rear button for focusing. That gives you the best of both worlds: you can keep your thumb off the AF button for a relatively still subject, but if it moves you can keep up with it just by mashing the AF button. I also like using auto ISO when I want control of both aperture and shutter speed.

Hi, what should be settings in a foggy morning. I have Nikon D3500
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 года назад
It depends how foggy it is really. Really thick fog can make it difficult to focus due to the lack of contrast. If it's really dense, I might use manual focussing. Other than that, the settings would be the same as usual. Use a wide area of focus points for moving subjects, and perhaps fewer or even a single focus point for stationary birds. I usually go with Shutter Speed priority for moving birds and Aperture priority for still ones. You can set your ISO to auto if you like, but I just adjust mine as I go along depend on what is necessary to compensate for what the priority mode is giving me. Thanks for watching. 😊

Hi there. Because the birds were still, all the shots in this video were taken with a single point AF. When I'm taking shots of moving subjects I tend to use 51 points. I've experimented with 3D tracking, but never really had great results. Thanks for watching. 😊

Hi there. Yes, I think so. If you have the budget there are better alternatives now, but it's still a very good camera. It has an excellent sensor (same as D500), can shoot 8fps and the auto focus is decent too. My main camera is a Z7, but I still use this camera a lot, particularly for wildlife or fast moving subjects.

Hi Leon, I've never tried the 55-300, but I did read a lot about it when I was deciding to buy the 70-300. The reason I went for the 70-300 is because the reviews I read said that the auto focusing was faster. But the optical quality of the two lenses is supposed to be quite similar. If you go for the 70-300, make sure you get the VR version.

Thanks Andrew. It's much easier if you have a hide you can get inside. We have a few round here but not really possible at the moment with lockdown. If you're out in the open, you have to be really far away in order not to scare the birds off. That's why most of the images look really noisy - I've had to crop heavily. Nice video 👍🏻, I have a sony a6300 with a 70-350mm. When the light is good I get good decent shots but as soon as the light is gone and its overcast and I have to bump up the iso the images aren't the best, anything over 200 /300 iso is rubbish. I'm looking to change and get a nikon d7500 with a 150-600mm. When would you say noise starts becoming an issue with this camera? Some of these shots look awesome even with the iso in the thousands!
@Robert-Bishop

Thanks. I usually get decent results up to about ISO 6400. Some of the shots in this video are a bit noisier than I would like because I've had to crop quite a bit. If you are using the 150-600 though, you're not going to need to crop as much and I imagine you'll get great results. I usually apply a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom too.

hi Robert, can you please offer me some advice for bird photography? I am a novice. I was looking at the d7500 or the d500. i decided on the d500. I will bundle it with the 70-300 mm lens. But my friend who is a photographer originally recommended two lenses. Would the 70-200mm lens in the link below offer any advantage over the 70-300 lens I am bundling in my purchase? The 500mm would be great for long distance if can't get too close I assume... if I am on a safari, for instance. 1) What I am getting camera, plus 70-300 lens mm bundle: www.amazon.com/dp/B07QS78FVY/?coliid=IQS0122IB4BR3&colid=SKGEZO41POZQ&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1 2)Friend recommended this lens originally. Does it offer an advantage over the one I am bundling with my purchase: www.amazon.com/dp/B01M4L36RJ/?coliid=I1KKN7CJ175HRF&colid=SKGEZO41POZQ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it 3)And he recommended i get this one as well for long distance bird photography: www.amazon.com/dp/B07GSJQXRM/?coliid=INZ6NSG0Q2RDM&colid=SKGEZO41POZQ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it Lastly, should i worry about aperture since I don't plan to shoot in low light per se except if I am shooting birds in or under a shaded tree. I noticed you were using F 4.5-6.3, which seems fine as far I could tell. I am still trying to learn about aperture.
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 года назад
Hi Charles, I've never used one personally, but I hear nothing but good things about the D500, so great choice there. As for the 70-200, the short answer, in my opinion, is no there isn't an advantage. I own the older version of the 70-200 VR I and it's a phenomenal lens, however 200mm isn't enough reach for bird photography. Even with the 70-300 you will find yourself sometimes getting too close to the birds and scaring them away. Or if you are not too close to the birds, then they're going to be very small in your shot, meaning you'll need to crop your image which reduces resolution and introduces noise. Secondly the 70-200 is big and heavy which is fine if you're sat in a hide, but you'll appreciate the size and weight of the 70-300 if you're on the move. Having said all that, having a wider maximum aperture such as 2.8 is certainly an advantage. Every shot you take is going to be a compromise between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Generally for birds, you're going to want your shutter speed fairly high, letting in less light. You'll therefore need to choose either a wider aperture to let more light in, or put your ISO up. The latter will introduce more noise in your image. So, as you say, I'm using apertures of 4.5-6.3 but my ISO is quite high to compensate. In an ideal world I would like the wider aperture if possible. Also, a wider aperture allows you to create a narrower depth of field, so you can get those really nice blurry backgrounds to isolate your subject. Finally, the 500mm - absolutely, the only reason not to get that lens is the cost. The other option, if you want a decent focal length but also the fast aperture, is the 300mm 2.8 - again, amazing lens, but very pricey. I hope that helps and all the best with your photography.
@Salmiyaguy1
@Salmiyaguy1 3 года назад
@@Robert-Bishop Thank you this helps a lot so I should stick the the lens I am bundling and get the 500mm as an extra lens? Money is not really an issue. I will be taking private photography lessons once Covid restrictions ease up and hope to be taking photos of migratory birds by late April.
@Robert-Bishop
@Robert-Bishop 3 года назад
Yes, I would definitely get the 70-300, it's very versatile. The 500mm would also be great. Though personally I would take the 70-300 and the 300mm 2.8 if money were no issue. Be sure to share your images online somewhere, it would be great to see your results.
@johnnyparkinson9431
@johnnyparkinson9431 3 года назад
Another option would be the Nikon 200-500 f5.6. It's a big lens, but very versatile, and less than half the price of the 500. Sharp as well, I use mine all the time for wildlife, on the D7500.
@Salmiyaguy1
@Salmiyaguy1 3 года назад
@@johnnyparkinson9431 Money is not an issue per se. if the image quality though is great I would buy the Nikon 200-500mm over the 500mm telephoto lens. My number one concern is versatility. I want to be able to shoot in my backyard and also shoot a yellow billed cuckoo in the tree tops. Is 70-300mm is good enough for my backyard where the birds don't fear me since I feed them? And is the 200-500mm good for the wilderness distanced bird shots? Do I have this about right?
