In my last two videos, • Why I'm SWITCHING from... and • A day in the field tes... , I talked about why I am moving away from Pentax full frame to Panasonic micro four thirds and subsequently tested the camera in the field on a day trip to the Murray Valley region of Victoria.
In this video I visit the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee, Victoria - a birding Mecca in Australia, particularly for migratory wading birds. These tiny world travellers will be departing our shores in the next few weeks, returning to Siberia and Alaska for their Northern hemisphere breeding season so this was one of the last chances this year to photograph them. It was also a chance to test out the Panasonic G9 and Panasonic Leica 100-400mm f/4-6.3 tele zoom lens.
I hope you enjoy.

Wow, just came across your video - we're planning our trip to Australia this year and Ebird shows that location as the hottest hotspot in Victoria - definitely on our itinerary. Thanks for this and I have the Leica 100-400mm on a G95. It has been excellent thus far and I can concur with everything you said about this fantastic piece of glass. Lots of outdoor usage can make one adept at working around the very few shortcomings of this lens.

Hi Smitha, thanks for your comments. The Western Treatment Plant can only be accessed by permit and key. Single day permits are available to interstate and overseas visitors or you can join a commercial tour. Details can be found at: www.melbournewater.com.au/services/licences-and-permits/birdwatching-access

You sir are rad. I suffer from depression. Photography is one of my few passions. Love my g9. You inspire me to enjoy life. To just appreciate nature and paradoxically capture it with some of the finest tools that are not only fun to use, but are partly responsible for the destruction the nature that we are shooting. Like I said, depression 🤣

Another great G9 video! Love seeing your images and also hearing about your discoveries with the camera. I actually bought my G9 to do birding but it takes a while to learn how to track birds in flight. I am taking notes from you as a pro. Looking forward to more in this series. Hope your back is better and the skin cancer is in check!

About 10 years ago I bought a Cotton Carrier camera harness. I love it. Hands free walking around the state park here in Wisconsin with quick access to my GH5 for the birds when I need it and insects from the hip mounted LX10. No more walking around the park with a strap digging into my shoulder. I have no connection the them, just one camera birder to another.

Cheers Ian I won a competition to shoot images of Birds of Prey at a wildlife centre in Shropshire (nearly 3 hours drive tomorrow), with a Panasonic instructor. I have the G9 and the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm plus other lenses so can't wait and especially watched this video for focus system. So I have set it up the way you stated, so here's hoping for some great shots. Should be easy as these Birds are trained! Thankyou once again, subscribed!

Iv got a G9 but with the 100 300 lens and even with that lens you can get great results! Not confident with the tracking yet i found i got better results with the square focus set up with pinpoint and AFC half press and on M speed the other shooting speeds scare me lol The other thing which really impresses me about the G9 is how much detail in the shadows you can get back and how it controls the noise even with not there best lenses for MFT its very surprising imo. Great video 👍

I recommend the cotton carrier. I've had mine for years - ever since the company started up. It's the best thing. You can shoot for longer and you can have both hands free while climbing around rocks etc to get a better vantage point.

Hi Terence, thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video. I've seen the Cotton Carrier harness but never tried one. @@IanSmissenPhotography Yes, you should! The Cotton Carrier vest is one of the best investments I've ever made in my mFT setup. I use a 5 lb Canon FD 300mm f2.8 lens extensively, and it used to get a bit tiring to carry it around. I had once dropped my older, lighter FD 300mm f4 lens from my BlackRapid strap after the screw came undone and never used it again (thankfully the lens and camera survived, although the adapter broke!). I have two versions of the CC vest. The older one and the new one with the side holster. I like the older one better because I think it's better built - more rugged, more pockets, and the hub (mounted to the lens) is more intuitive because the tripod mount on it is at the center, even though it gets loose every now and then. The new vest is nicer looking but not as well-built as the older one, and the tripod mount on the hub is to one side, making it hard to mount a lens on a monopod. Anyway, the important part is that the accessories of the two vests are NOT interchangeable, so you'll have to stick with one. It might be hard to find additional hubs for the older design, but I like it a lot more.

I have a 100-300mm Panasonic lens at the moment. I was going to buy the 100-400mm, but I might wait as I'd like to compare to the Olympus lens in development ( M.Zukio Digital ED 150-400mm F/4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro - yes I had to look that up) as it has a teleconvertor and with that you can go as high as 1000mm! So, I may wait, compare both and then decide on the best option. That means waiting a year, but I still really enjoy using the 100-300mm, so it isn't really suffering. Thanks for sharing the day out. It looks like an amazing adventure.

Have you tried any of the inbuilt extenders that Lumix bodies provide? I used the 100-300 prior to purchasing the 100-400 and although you have to reduce the resolution to 10m, the 1.4x menu option makes your 300 end into an 840mm.

Hi Anthony, thanks for watching and your comments. I'm considering 4K video but I shoot a lot on GoPro Hero 4s at 2.7K 30fps. The Hero 4 can only shoot 15fps in 4K so basically useless (and I can't afford to upgrade).

Hallo there. I use the same combination. I think that following birds is easier without a tripod clamp. It makes turning the zoom ring is also easier. Maybe something to try out...
@IanSmissenPhotography
@IanSmissenPhotography 5 лет назад
Thanks, old habit - I find it easier to carry using the tripod mount with a long bracket but you're right about zooming. One thing I do find irritating with this lens is that the tripod mount only rotates 90 degrees. I am used to larger lenses where I rotate it 180 degrees - can still carry using it but it's out of the way.

So jealous of the G9 for birds in flight! My G80 is hopeless and when you showed your 37 points barely covering the screen it made me more jealous as the G80 only has 49 on the whole frame! I do love the 100-400 though.

Thanks 007Stalled7, yes, I haven't tried creating any truly custom setups yet just messed with size and location of the default 'diamond' shape but thanks for your comment - will have to give it a try. For nerds in flight against just sky, I'm also interested in trying full 225-Area that covers the entire screen (unlike even the top end Canikony FF Pro cameras, although I think the Sony A9 gets close). I shoot bird photos in my backyard which is adjacent to about 25 acres of open space about three miles from the ocean in San Diego-Del Mar area. I have a birdbath and bird feeders. Thanks Steve. So far I am very pleased with the AF tracking - only one day out dedicated to bird photography and didn't spend much time actually testing BIF - as the location is not the best for that - but will try some of my cliff-top sites that really test your ability. The new lens/camera combo is lighter and easier to handle but is taking a while to get used to following birds in flight with the longer effective focal length but that's just practice getting used to the new feel. Cheers, Ian
